"Why are you sad mom?" Icecream asked, walking backwards, she was the martyr, one who had volunteered herself and would be the first ever sacrificed.
"Cause I raised an idiot who will blindly let someone slaughter you. Maybe the fact that I was imprisoned for murdering my family and now I was let go to kill my daughter. But you're too stupid to know how stupid the world is so go live through your rose colored shaded eyes and see the world for what it isn't. That's my curse, seeing things for how it is," Mistyveil said, it didn't even come out in a hiss, she said it as a fact and it wasn't like it wasn't. But it was a cold truth and of all people she was telling this to her daughter, Icecream. It could very well be the last words she ever says to her.
Icecreams ears flattened, but the two had been arguing with each other for moons now with Mistyveil winning each screaming match. Icecream had thought her moons away from being an apprentice would be nicer, but instead she had spent her last few weeks looking sad. Today she had finally seemed happy like she had been and now her expression broke, "This is for the greater good though."
Mistyveil's entire fur bristled, "The ancients can suck it," The alchemist said walking past everyone including Icecream as her eyes widened.
Icecream looked around as if she was expecting an avalanche to come pouring down or swarm of hawks to attack. She quickly looked at Leatherstar.

Leatherstar gave Icecream a soft sad smile. "It is an impossible thing to ask a mother to harm her child." He replied softly. "But if Mistyveil is anything she is loyal to a fault. She will do her part if you still choose to do yours. A martyr is always a volunteer Icecream. You will not be forced." He blinked his emerald orbs and tipped his head up the mountain. A clear but undemanding invitation. "If you do this you will be saving your clan, mother, father, and siblings for many more moons. All by yourself."
Polarice forced herself not to flinch as she overheard the conversation between mother and daughter. She didn't have much family left. Snowkit was the only one she knew of, and she couldn't help but be glad the kitten was sick and hadn't been able to leave camp and accompany them. She didn't want to be killed, and thankfully her blood wouldn't be spilled today. Would their sacrifice really protect their home, or was it something that was just made up and nobody knew what would really happen? Giving herself a mental shake, she forced herself to move faster to catch up with the group. She had lagged behind when she'd started thinking.
Crimsonrose’s expression was surprisingly grim. For the first time she would’ve rather stayed in the nursery with Mysterykit. This was not an event she looked forwards to. As she had taken her smallest daughter here to avoid slaughtering her as the laws of the league commanded her to do so. Crimsonrose felt Mistyveil’s plight greatly. Which was partially why she was here. Since she’d been thinking of hiding away she forced herself to come along. To stand near Leatherstar as she always did. Preparing herself for the sacrifice.
"I believe you Leatherstar, I always have. Though apart of me kind of wants to wait past the deadline. To see if it really happens. I don't mind sacrificing myself, but... Well my mom can't me help, but wonder if it's real and not all coincidence. I'd hate to sacrifice myself and cause a long line of martyrs who end up sacrificing themselves for nothing. But if you're really certain about this I don't mind, I'll see you someday, but hopefully many many years from now," Icecream smiled.
She always thought her mom would be able to understand her pain. The need to be something more. After all her mom had been a prisoner for so long and finally found her calling as a medicine cat, felt like she belonged. For moons she had been named Flutter instead of Ice and felt absolutely useless. As a kitten she had been mauled by a league cat at their border, half her face eaten off. It took more than her looks, it took everything from her. When Leatherstar announced the need for a martyr she had been an apprentice and didn't hesitate to volunteer. She changed her name, her outlook, everything and instead of sulking about from her wound her entire life she found peace and happiness in her final moons. For a time things were happy, especially while she was still an apprentice, but as the date moved closer her mom had been pushing her to refuse. But finally she felt useful and maybe when she would cast peace for another generation she would encourage others to follow in her pawsteps the way she never could have as Flutterkit.

"Aw Icecream. When Vegard gave you his blessing he instilled in you an understanding that not even I can comprehend of this sacred ceremony." Leatherstar cast his gaze up the mountain. Having climbed high enough now to see the peak through the clouds. The flat cut off where the alter was constructed by the ancients was just ahead. He looked back at Icecream. "Before Vegard offered his blessing to you. The white cats roamed freely and we lost many loyal friends and clan mates. Mothers, fathers, siblings. Vegard spilled his own blood the first time to save us without deserving it. He chose you to carry his blessing and his blood. Only a child of Vegard can save us as he once did. Have faith Icecream. So you can hunt with Vegard this day in Valhalla." He purred lightly and stopped to turn fully towards her to give her an affectionate and thoughtful lick between the eyes.
Arizonaraspberry breathed heavily as she trekked up the mountain. A few feet farther ahead Leatherstar and the martyr, Icecream. The red-furred she-cat wasn't sure why she was joining the clan in this 'sacrifice'. She didn't like the idea at all, of killing one of their own. Her disbelief of the gods was not public information anyways, so she had to keep the idea up as she wasn't sure what would happen if someone found out that she didn't believe in all of this.

Sweetpine followed behind Leatherstar. He looked about with slightly widened eyes, almost in disbelief about where they were and what was to happen. It was almost like it was all a bad joke. He wished his frozens were here, so he would have others to talk to, someone to focus his attention on, ease his anxieties. Instead he shook out his pelt, huffing under his breath. He flicked his ears back as he overheard Leatherstar and Icecream. He wondered how he would be able to do this to the other tom, knowing he would have to one day. His eyes narrowed, turning into emerald slits and he sighed.

Coming up to the flat land Leatherstar pulled away from Icecream and looked expectantly at Mistyveil. He knew if she chose to refuse her duties as the Alchemist he would have to step up in her place. While he didn't much like the idea of releasing the life from the young cat he also knew the ancients were as real as the mountain they stood on and he believed in their power. The wind seemed to pick up slightly. More or less a tugging breeze as the small pile of flat rocks loomed before them. Blood stained from ancient generations of lives given and sacrificed in this very place.
Sweetpine got what he wished for. The white frozen touches her tail to his flank suddenly, sensing an unease. Icedivy herself was unsure how she felt about this whole thing. However she was not the type to open her mouth about things she didn’t understand. To think that a cat could offer themselves up like this, for... death. It made her shiver, and her own slight unease would probably be noticeable. “Sorry I’m late.” She murmured.

Following the other brown tom, Sweetpine sat down as they reached the flat. He smiled as he looked up, inviting Icedivy to do the same, "Its okay," he whispered back, narrowing his eyes as he watched the others, looking over the landscape to see what may happen.
Mistyveil was licking her paw when she noticed all eyes on her, "What? This is my first slaughtering our clan mate ceremony. Do I just rip open her neck or do I need to like remove her eyeballs before killing her or something messed up to appease the ancients. There wasn't exactly a little tutorial I was told."
Icecream held a paw to her neck wide eyed at the imagery. She was going to do it regardless, but hoped the pain wouldn't last long. If anything she was worried that maybe there was a time limit that was becoming ever more fragile the slower they took. She didn't want the clan to become haunted again. She glanced back at her mom, "I'm sure it doesn't matter mom, they just need a sacrifice. I know you'll try to make it fast."
Mistyveil looked back at Leatherstar if there was something special she needed to do. He was the one that wanted to blindly believe a bunch of all powerful cats. Sure she believed their existence. She knew they were there and she knew they would go through with their words. Sacrificing was like asking a warrior to give their life on a battle field except minus any battle. It was to instead kill a cat so there would be zero battle. But isn't that kind of their life? To battle. It felt cowardly. Though she had to figure that the rest of WinterClan would rather feel safe than be brave and face the white cats.

Leatherstar padded to Icecreams side, leaving his pace next to Sweetpine, and rested his tail softly on her shoulder. "Come along. Don't worry." He lead her to the alter where he tapped the surface with his forepaw. "Up here." The alter was flat with stones near the head that tipped slightly towards a hollow at the base of the alter. Its hollowed form stained red from the blood of previous sacrifices. He stepped aside to give her space to lay down on her side so he could gather the holly and sage thats grew around its base so place next to her. He turned back and padded to Mistyveil. He stopped, his head next to hers. "Yes Mistyveil. You tear out her throat and you do it quickly. With the ancients guiding claws she will not suffer. They will snatch her spirit up the second blood flows. This is not like a normal killing."
Icecream lied down on the alter, "Oh wait. I was so entranced I forgot I should probably just give one by good-bye."
"Everyone. I've had a lot of good memories, but... I feel I can't be of much use for any of you. I was attacked as a kit, it's why my face is torn off on one half," She said, placing a paw over the scarred side of her face, "But I think for the first time I feel powerful and everything just feels right. I know my moms going to be off putting, but I know she blames herself for what happened to me and blames herself for what's happening now. I hope you're forgiving to her because I know this won't be easy, but I know she'll do what's right for all of us. I'm going to miss you all so much, but I'm completely happy to do this for all of you. Really. Don't feel bad for me, I'm not scared and I won't be alone. Thank-you for giving me such a beautiful life everyone."
"I can do it for you!" Windyhurricane, her puppy natured brother offered with a raise of his paw.
"No Windy," Icecream said.
"Oh okay..." Windyhurricane said, obediently placing his paw back down.
Icecream lied back down, "Okay," she nodded to Leatherstar and Mistyveil.
"Yeah I don't know about this Leatherstar..." Mistyveil said.
"No! No mom I'm scared, please. I-I'd feel safer if you did it. I don't want to do this if you don't. I trust you and I trust that the power of Errapel will guide your claws, please, it has to be you," Icecream begged.
"Look, the only person I've heard that's wanted you dead or sacrificed is Leatherstar," Mistyveil said before directing her attention on the crowd, "Honestly would anyone care if we were haunted if it meant we could keep Icecream around and Polarice? Wouldn't we rather suffer together than miss our clanmates? I mean I don't honestly care that much about Polarice, but I'm going to infer other people do. I'm just saying that this is messed up and someday your own stupid kin might be up here and you're left watching them die. So if you're at peace with that idea I guess I'll just kill my daughter. But just to make sure this is what we all want lift a paw if you want Icecream dead."

The jarl looked towards the molly next to him, almost apologetic in his eyes. He hated confrontation, and hated having to get into anything, and he especially didnt sant to do anything in front of Icedivy that he would regret, but this was getting ridiculous. He cleared his throat, quickly standing up, his brows knitted together atop narrowed emerald eyes. "Enough." He huffed, loud enough that he knew those atop the rocks and those behind him could hear, "This is enough. She wants to be sacrificed. This is the way of our life, and if anyone wants to continue to stay in winterclan they must follow these rules. Believer or not, her death is purposeful to her as much as it is to those who want protection from the white cats. Allow her the purpose she has." He seethed, his tail tip twitching with agitation.
"Yeah, I can see why you needed those poppy seeds, you are grumpy as all get out," Mistyveil said as her gaze drifted over the jarl to the rest of the crowd, "I guess if this guy is gonna speak for all of you I'm out."
She put a paw forward before adding, "I'm out on sacrificing my daughter, I don't mind killing Polarice or anyone else that's not mine. Though between you two," She said eyeing Leatherstar and Sweetpine, "I might return the favor for when you have kits. Since it's so noble and righteous of a thing to do."
Mistyveil turned back to where Icecream was, but she was gone. She tilted her head staring at the empty alter, uncertain of first what to think of it, "Huh."
The alchemist moved to the mountain side, the wind billowing along her half russian blue half peachy fur as she stared out at the vast land below, "Mmm. Yeah. She leapt. I guess I'd rather leap off a cliff than get my neck torn open too."
She stepped away from the edge back over to the crowd like there was nothing to see. She supposed they both got what they wanted, she didn't murder her daughter and Icecream sacrificed herself. Win. Win.

[ xD wow our first martyr sacrifice and it all went to hell XD omfg xD im dying haaaalp lol ]
Leatherstar sighed. This was not the honor or glory Icecream had deserved. It was a wonder they were all wrapped up in the situation that they didnt even notice her make her own sacrifice. He flicked his tail to those gathered. He opened his maw to speak but before he could a golden light seemed to drift down over the landing.
A large tom with yellow fur that was long and thick along his back and shoulders with a mane as thick as a lion's around his neck. Golden eyes shifted across the crowd. The are around him warm and comforting. Welcoming. He stood on the alter his paws stained red. A scar across his neck where claws once shed it own blood. He cast his gaze upon the Alchemist.
"Mistyveil. You have dishonored this sacred place. You have dishonored your blessings from Errapel and dishonored your own child." His voice was a deep baritone that rumbled like thunder. "If you had trusted your daughter and trusted the us you would have seen Icecream again. But now you will mourn her like any mother would mourn a child." He shifted his gaze towards Icecreams still bleeding form at the base of the cliff. "I will guide her to Valhalla where she belongs in eternal health, where she will have no deformities, natural or caused." A low growl rumbled in his throat. "But you Mistyveil. As punishment for dishonoring your clan and your sacred position will feel the pain of eternal hunger. I am the Ancient of Sanctuary. I allow the prey past the borders for Aarwn to guide your claws to it. You can eat as much as your wish but you will never be satisfied."
He looked to Leatherstar with a look of disapproval. "Have you not told your Thanes of us? Have you not educated them? We are not gods. We only wish to keep this sacred place clean from the curse of the white cats. And in turn bless those who dwell on our mountain. You shall spread her blood on the graves and seal the white cats for another season. You alone."

The jarl backed up, both in shock of Icecream throwing herself off the cliff and the appearance of Vegard. His ears flattened and he sat down again, looking towards his leader with widened eyes. It was one of the few times he had seen the chieftain scolded without it coming from Crimsonrose, or someone else poking fun at him. His pelt prickled and he tried to relax, steadying his breathing.
Mistyveil watched the grand entrance, impressive. The cool scar, the lion looking features, the way the light seemed to trickle in like some sort of holy spotlight created by the clouds. It was mesmerizing. Until he started talking. Her heart burned, she could almost hear the searing fire crackling in her ears. Wow. So first she was locked up for murdering her entire family. Now that she refused to murder her daughter she's cursed with eternal hunger. Having been imprisoned for so long there were few moons she ever enjoyed feeling full, now she'd never get to feel it again. She finally had turned a new leaf, the way that was supposed to lead to a better life. She healed people instead of hurting them, she no longer tormented people in prisons like she had as an apprentice. Why was it that no matter how good or bad she was it didn't change how cruel everyone was towards her?
"Wherever away from everyone I ever knew is, that's where I want to go when I die. Being here is my hell. But cute trick anyways," Mistyveil said.
Every part of her was on fire. She felt bruised inside, the instinct to imprint her pain on anyone who came her way felt possessive. Why had she been so stupid? She had been their slave forced to fight apprentices. Forced to have kits because if she didn't it was a never ending battle. See said kits crumpled form at the bottom of the cliff, the kit she never even wanted. She was still a slave, a slave to heal and put up with this. If she felt hungry she couldn't tell in the moment, all she could see was red. Her heart didn't ache for Icecream, it ached for her own stupidity. To think that anyone here cared. Crimsonrose the hypocrite who ran away to save her own kit only for her to do nothing in her defense. Leatherstar who was there by her side only to get what he wanted. Everyone in WinterClan was a pretender, even the ancients. No... She wasn't a slave to them or trapped. They were trapped with her, they had no medicine cat apprentice, no one else who could heal. Waking her up early to go on this stupid expedition to sacrifice Icecream was WinterClan's worse mistake.
If she did anything, what could they do? Get rid of her with no one to heal them or care for queens? She smiled, this ancient was wrong, he didn't just give her starvation, he gave her clarity. Mistyveil walked away after all if she had eternal hunger she better get to the freshkill pile before the crowd started moving.
"HA! Sucks for you Leatherstar," Barrenfrost laughed, wiping a tear from his eye. He had been a little skeptical getting up and going to this, but what a show!
