Hollowmoon felt her muscles complain as she ducked back into the nursery for the umpteenth time that morning, carrying heaping piles of stinking moss out and brining fresh in. Her expression was practically emotionally, though the flash of her eyes occasionally betrayed her building frustration. Not at the kits or even the queens who mostly offered her grateful murmurs and generally ignored her. No, she wouldn't blame those who were also suffering under the clan's oppression. Her anger was reserved for one cat alone.
Occasionally she'd see his black pelt flashing in the moonlight reflected off the cenote's water when he deigned to grace them with his presence. Keir was her enemy, one she had been studying since he stepped paw into their camp. She was no perfect martyr, willing to toss her head and openly defy the tom only to see herself atop a pyre with her name on it. No, hers was a quiet form of protest, a rebellion of kindness. Though nearly as dangerous as direct opposition, it at least helped others while she did it. These kits and apprentices didn't know what right was anymore, what words like good and bad meant.
She dropped the pile of moss in the growing refuse pile she'd been adding to all day and paused to catch her breath, taking the stench of the old moss over the blood and pain in camp. As a so-called "inferior" warrior she was tasked with the jobs others didn't want and was expected to be grateful for it. Ha, as if. Still, she wouldn't have the queens or kits suffer for her own pride and so she did a good job, making sure there were no brambles or thorns for the kits to hurt themselves on. Her anger was directed at Keir and Keir alone. It would just be a matter of time until the proclaimed king was deposed, and she was determined to live to see that day.

All of the kits Marinewisp had come to the clan with a few moons ago where all apprentices now, but kier has oppressed her, forcing her to stay in the nursery caring for the motherless kits, raising them in his ideal. For fear of her children she embraced kiers ways and does her given job without complaining. Her heart twinged with pain when remembering how they behaved at the last trial. Her precious little kits had become kiers diligent little soldiers. At least she knew they would survive this crule little world, that she brought them too. She thought briefly of her kits real mother, she had given them to her to live a true clan life, but this isn’t how Marinewisp had imagined it would be like from the stories her long lost friend had told her.
Lifting her head sleepily a small mottled kit was napping in her nest. It wasn’t her kit, ever since kier ripped the kits from their mothers she had taken on a motherly figure for them. “Oh, hello.” She mewed, letting the fur on her spine rest, she had seen this she-cat a few times before. “Oh, thank you, I’m sure this little one will appreciate the new moss to play in.” You could hear the strained happiness in her voice. Her own words pulling at her heart. Not to long ago she had seen this little kit bragging about learning of poisons. She almost feared the small thing sleeping peacefully in her nest.

"Of course," murmured Hollowmoon, keeping her voice low in hopes of not waking up the other kits. Moving the moss about while they were asleep was already hard enough, and having to balance the chaotic energy of a denful of kits without stepping on would was almost more than she could accomplish.
"Are you well enough fed? Warm enough?" she asked, glancing between the queen and the kits tucked away against her warmth. "I can grab you lunch, if you haven't eaten yet." She set the last bundle of moss down and began to carefully spread it into the last open nest, making a note to come back later and finish the currently occupied nests. "It would be no trouble. I haven't had company while I ate in a moon, at least."

The thought of eating made her stomach growl, she was so busy with all the kits in the nursery that she was neglecting her own health. " a bite to eat would probably do me some good." Marinewisp mused halfheartedly. "I think i would like to stretch my legs. I could go with you." she checked that the kit was sleeping and rose from her nest, "there are plenty of queens right now." she glanced around confirming the kits would not be alone. with a nod to another queen she gave Her short legs a stretch. One could tell she wasn't built for wild life, having been a kittypet, she was soft, and lacked the muscles of a wild cat. "I am sure they will be fine." the cave was making her uneasy, how closed off it was, the quiet echo of water dripping in the distance.

Hollowmoon seemed to want to say something when the queen mentioned eating out of the nursery to stretch her legs, but kept silent and offered her a tight smile. "That'll be good, thanks," she said, pausing to make sure the queen was on her paws and steady before turning and leaving the nursery. She wouldn't be able to eat, not without the premise of getting the food for Marinewisp back in the nursery. No problem, she thought as they walked, steeling her rumbling stomach to the idea.
"How long have you been in the nursery?" she asked, hoping to distract herself from her hunger with conversation. "I would claw any tom that tried to get me with kit if it meant being stuck in there. It seems horrible." She realized a beat too late that her words could be seen as offensive to the queen and quickly backpedaled. "To me, at least! I like warrior duties better, I suppose." Though she wouldn't exactly call what she was instructed to do daily as warrior duties; they were barely a step up from the forced labor of their prisoners.
Embarrassed Marinewisp felt a small amount of shame for her past. "I actually can't have kits." she mewed softly. "I was a kittypet, they took me to the ve- I mean the cutter." she remembered the word her old friend had told her clan cats use for the vet. "I had a friend who wanted me to bring her kits to the clans, to grow up the way she did." she reflected on the cat who birthed her kits. "as soon as they where weaned she gave them to me, and we ended up here." what a shame she thought to herself. if only she had stumbled into another clans territory. "i love them as my own though. They are all apprentices now." her voice was heavy she didn't like that cats they where becoming now days but they where surviving.
"Because of my history I was deemed to soft for warrior labor, so here I am." Marinewisp held back her spite, she wasn't useless, she had raised five kits on her own in the wild, feeding them teaching them, and protecting them. "I enjoy kits, but I could due with a change of scenery." she gave a halfhearted joke, putting on her best disguise now that she was out in the open. she held her head high and kept her tone of voice as steady as she could. this place scared her, but nothing she couldn't handle.
Hollowmoon nodded along, well aware that their current location left them in danger of being overheard and reported on for 'dissatisfaction' with the clan. "I agree," she mewed neutrally, "A change of scenery can do the soul well." She didn't comment on Marinewisp's small personal explanation, feeling quite uncomfortable doing so in such a public setting, but she did rest of her tail briefly on the queen's back as a small gesture of sympathy.
"Your prey," she mewed, nosing the mouse towards Marinewisp and holding back the rumbling hunger within herself. She took a seat across from the other she-cat and struggled to find a safe topic for conversation. "The weather should be warming and more prey should be running soon," she said, finally settling on what she thought was a safe enough subject. "You should be free to eat your fill."

The white and black Queen lay down and took a grateful bite. Giving a casual glance at their surroundings and sniffing the air, confident that noone was around to put them on trial, she nudged the mouse back to Hallowmoon. "Here, I am not nursing kits, and no one will notice." she mewed softly encouraging her to eat as well.
"It's not just the kits the queens should care for." she mewed "All of the clan needs to be cared for, despite what some think." her words where a whisper, just for Hallowmoon's ears.

This was the double-double speak that Hollowmoon feared most in the clan her home had become. She didn't know much about Marinewisp outside of what one might know in passing, and though she wanted to believe the queen's intentions were pure, she couldn't be sure. She felt swift, fiery anger rise up in her at Keir for making her question even the most mundane of kindnesses, but swallowed back the vitriol and forced a naturally pleasant smile to her face.
"It wouldn't be right to eat what the superior warriors have caught," she mewed as though by rote. "They hunt for you queens and each other. I can catch my own prey later. I'd much rather just chat." She pointedly ignored the other she-cat's hushed commentary and tried to hurry past it, not nearly as confident as Marinewisp that they were safely out of earshot.
(twice now i have thought i replied to this and my computer said... nah... )
A pang struck the queens heart, she felt sympathy for this she-cat, her position as a queen granted her a full belly, and a dry bed, but she knew this cat would be struggling much more than she. "The weather is turning, I think you are right, we will soon have plenty of food." she mewed pulling the pray back to herself. She took an awkward bite, the taste of the prey was good, but was bitter to her heart. At least she knew her kits would be well cared for, their enthusiasm granting them high positions under Kier's reign. "With any luck, No one will have to go hungry." she muttered, keeping her bitter tone under control, and giving a smile.

{ that's the worst i'm sorry haha }
"That is always the hope," mewed Hollowmoon distractedly, on a sharp watch to find any prying eyes or ears near them. When she came up empty, she relaxed just slightly, but not nearly enough to let her guard down entirely. "Are you finding that many of the other queens are finding themselves with kit this time of the season?" she asked, actually interested in the answer. She loved kits, and though she'd rather face the clan's cat-hunting patrols than get pregnant herself, she didn't want to see them hungry. "I'll have to double my hunting to make sure we have enough prey to feel all of the new mouths we're gaining."
"suprisingly no, kits are coming quite slowly at the moment." Marinewisp knew exactly why, Who would want to have kits if they where just going to be taken away. "It's a strange thing indead." She mewed, wanting to scream at kier for ripping kits from their mothers, and forcing good strong warriors into the nursery just for falling in love. "Though, I am sure with the apprentices being made warriors, they will find young love and bring more kits." Perhaps, she thought to herself, when kiers new brainwashed forces become old enough he will make it easier for new kits to be born, and raised to his liking... perhaps he might even let them keep their kits, since they will only know his teachings. it filled her with rage, taking away the basic rights of she-cats, to the point they feared the one thing they should love the most.

Hollowmoon nodded along, her attention split between the queen, her prey, and any superior warriors that might bother them. After a few too many beats of silence following Marinewisp's comments, Hollowmoon realized she should say something and felt heat rise to her cheeks in embarrassment for being so distracted.
"That's good, at least," she mewed, feeling a fool. "I just hope the apprentices are able to fill their roles well." She didn't say what that implied, that they would be beaten and punished for mistakes if they failed.
