Feverpaw scrambled up the stone, flanks heaving as she landed prostrate in the leaf-bare sun above. She'd thought she'd just do a little practicing, climb up some of the boulders near the sandy banks of the ravine river, and hadn't realized just how steep they truly were. For a few long minutes she just laid there, catching her breath and letting the warmth of the low sun keep away the chill of the winter air. When her muscles stopped screaming in protest, she slowly got to her paws and looked down, wondering if her amazing feat had even been worth it if no one was even watching.
Pinepaw was right in the middle of a sleepy sun bath when the scrabbling against rocks slitted his eyes. A few foxlengths away a she-cat heaved her way up the steep slope and plopped there for a moment. A small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth as she lay there panting, and he decided he'd better get around and give her a bit of praise. He frequented this area often in his personal training and was a bit excited to see another apprentice here.
He got up and gave a big stretch then began to approach Feverpaw with a greeting. "Well done. A bit exhilarating, isn't it?" The tom didn't think of the fact that she hadn't noticed him there and the poor cat would probably be frightened by his large figure and surprise greeting.

Her first mistake was looking down where she'd come from. As no one had been there when she made the climb, it came as no surprise that there was no one there now. So when a voice came from behind her, she couldn't muffle the squeak of surprise that escaped her. "Gods above you scared me," she gasped, cutting him an annoyed look for half a second while her heart climbed back down out of her throat. "Pinepaw, you could've said hello earlier and not scared my soul out of my chest," she chastised with a lighthearted tease, shaking her head and settling down to a comfortable lounge, tail flicking aimlessly.
"Don't suppose you could just forget me acting like a total kittypet, could you?" She seemed sheepish but her posture wasn't defensive or scared, more put-out by her own behavior than anything. "You have to admit, you cut quite the scary silhouette to anyone not expecting you!"
The large apprentice almost jumped himself at her scared squeak, hair beginning to rise on his spine before he relaxed with a soft chuckle. He came and sat beside her, gazing down at the fall below himself and forcing a shiver away. "My apologies. I like to train here often, as climbing it is strength building and satisfying. I like to doze here in the sun for a rest before returning." Pinepaw took a moment longer to observe the view around them, a small smile playing on his face.
Before he spoke again he turned his gaze to her. "I rarely find others in my little spot, though. What brought you up here?" He gestured with his tail lightly, his gaze following it back across the deep expanse that yawned before them.

Feverpaw followed his gaze out over the ravine and was silent for a moment, considering. "Just thought I'd see if I could do it. Y'know?" She glanced over at him, suddenly feeling a little foolish. "I mean, it's pointless to try without anyone to see you, since the others would just say I made it up, but I just wanted to prove to myself?"
She didn't meet his gaze as she spoke, wishing she'd made up something that sounded a little cooler. That was just the truth, though. For a cast-off kitten found by the clan, she felt obliged to be the best and prove that they made the right choice to take her in. "But what about you? Surely your mentor already knows you're capable. I mean," she chuckled, trailing off a little as she realized she was just complimenting him. "...look at you." She felt her face burn. Why did she have to make everything so awkward all the time?
Pinepaw found himself slowly nodding at her words as he admired their surroundings. "I know what you mean," He agreed, "I try hard to prove not just to my peers but to myself that I'm worthy of a spot in the clan. And, maybe someday, I can be more than just a warrior." His gaze grew a bit distant as he envisioned himself as deputy, or perhaps even leader; it was a dream that may very well never happen but he strived for nonetheless.
Being a bit of a serious tom he felt a bit embarrassed as well at her words, and turned his gaze downwards as a small smile pulled at his lips. "I do appreciate that. But somehow I feel like I've never done enough... Though I have to say, why wouldn't you train like this when you get to the top and get to take this in?" With that he motioned once more to their surroundings.

"Oh, you have aspirations of leadership?" There was no judgement in Feverpaw's voice, more just a simple curiosity. She was content with her lot in life and didn't really feel like working towards anything more than comfort and success in her role. It was a little strange to meet someone who saw their future and were making strides towards it.
"This view is definitely worth it. Let's both be glad more apprentices don't try to show off or we'd run out of room up here for everyone to fit." She laughed, rolling onto her back to let the sun warm her stomach, eyes closed in happiness.
A nod accompanied his response, "Perhaps it's just something to push myself further, but I like the idea of having the power to do good." The tom looked down at his paws as he thought of all the evil he had already seen in his short life when he had no chance of stopping it. Things are growing to be different now, and he'd decided long ago he would do all he could to become a strong leader wherever he ended up; he would be the light he wanted to see in the world. Realizing Feverpaw was speaking again he shook himself from his thoughts and turned to look at her.
Pinepaw gave a small chuckle at this and decided to stretch out a bit himself. "That's true. We'll just have to keep this spot between me and you." He said as his eyes half closed, feeling his muscles relax in the sun.

Feverpaw was content to remain in that companionable silence, lounging in the sun, until the sharp scent of an unfamiliar cat caught her attention. She glanced over at Pinepaw silently, wondering if he smelled it to. From where they were on the rock, their low position and high angle make it difficult - if not impossible - to see them as long as they stayed down. "Do you know that scent?" she whispered, voice barely louder than the birds chirping around them.
The tom was on the verge of dozing off when Feverpaw's voice shook him back into reality. As her question registered in his mind, he parted his jaws to try for a better scent, and felt the hairs on his spine raise as he realized they were unfamiliar to him as well. Pinepaw turned his gaze to the other apprentice and gave a quiet shake of the head, anxiety reaching his eyes.
His voice was almost completely silent as he said, "Should I look?"

She gave a short, hesitant nod. Feverpaw wasn't one to shirk her duties or cower back while others did the hard work, but in that moment she felt more exposed and vulnerable than normal, tired as she was from making the exhausting climb not long before. "Be careful," she breathed, resting her tail on his flank for a moment before withdrawing.
Below, a tabby-striped tom wandered, tail flicking irritably. He opened his mouth and scented the air, eyes darting around for the sources. When he couldn't find anything, he quickly began to prowl around, looking for any sort of prey. His flanks were sucked in from hunger, face sunken and eyes dull, and a sort of frantic energy propelled him forwards.
With one last look at Feverpaw, he crouched close to the ground and slowly inched towards the edge, careful to not knock any loose pebbles down below. Finally his gaze fell to the hungry stranger that prowled below and he took him in briefly, a pang of anxiety but also pity hitting him as he quietly retreated back to where they had been previously.
"Looks like a starving loner." Pinepaw whispered, considering what they should do. He wondered if he should chase them out or let them make their own way out; the first was probably right for his clan, but could he bring himself to hurt this cat who so obviously is dying slowly? He had been in the same position as the stranger before, and knew how sad, lonely and desperate it was. Finally he met Feverpaw's gaze, eyes shining with a sort of what should we do?
