The topic of her conversation with Howlingheart still flush in her mind as she left her den, Sunstar scanned the camp but seemed to come up short of what- or who- she was searching for. She poked her head into the medicine cat's den but again came up empty, then roamed between the other usual haunts of her quarry, considering defeat when one last thought redirected her path. It brought her down through rain-heavy branches and closing flowerheads, their colors bright despite the haze of dusk, until she spotted a flame sitting just beyond the foliage, the river at her paws reflecting the golden sun rays.
"Sunpaw?" Sunstar's voice was quieter than it typically was, a hush in the late-day gloom.

Sunpaw was a cat of routines. She spent the dawn moments in the dandelion fields or collecting herbs, the daytime in her den organizing her herbs or treating any injuries, or experimenting with different medicines for a certain tom's cough, and late afternoons doing whatever she did, either dragging Crowflight or other cats to help her with her herb gathering, or hanging out with her best friend, and after that...she always did like having a bit of time on her own.
The river was nice. She hated water, as in swimming, but water itself, flowing down a river as simply a symphony of sound...she enjoyed that. She breathed in deeply, before sighing; the matter with her brother was still bothering her a little bit. She was still thinking about him, and how Sunstar had forbid any relationship between the two clans, when the cat in her thoughts appeared.
"Oh! Sunstar!" she spoke, almost jumping to her paws, her hazel eyes wide as she peered at her leader, "I didn't see you!" She didn't know why she felt just a little skittish around her friend, was it her position, or perhaps the secret she was harbouring? "I–what are you doing out here? Did you need me for anything?"
"You okay, Sunny?" Sunstar waved away her fright, frowning a little at her friend's fidgeting appearance. She would rather not notice these things- the way Sunpaw struggled to hold her gaze, how she was ever so slightly more nervous in her presence- but there they were, and her concern was veiled behind the prismatic glitter of her own eyes. She moved to the bank to sit beside the younger cat, leaning over to brush their coats together. Whatever plagued Sunpaw, and whatever doubts that evoked in Sunstar, pressing into the other she-cat was like a hug, comforting and war between them.

Sunny didn't mean to be so skittish around Sunstar, and at her worried look, Sunpaw shook her head, giving the other cat a warm smile. The younger she-cat closed her eyes as Sunstar's fur brushed against her own. It always felt like a sign that everything was fine, that things were safe, since that day, when she was still a kit and Sunstar had rescued her from that badger. "Yeah, I was just...thinking about everything," she still had a slight twinge of nervousness in her light laugh, but she returned the gesture was a soft nuzzle into Sunstar's pelt.
"How are you?" she spoke brightly, eager to get the attention away from herself, "how's leading the clan now?" She had wanted to ask about the marriage and how Sunstar felt about it, but she didn't want to bring it up unless she was certain it wasn't a touchy topic.
Some dogs were better left where they lay. The marriage, Reapingnight's presence beside her at night, Wintrystar's ambivalence looming like a dangerous storm ready to unleash a terrifying deluge upon her clan... She did what she thought she needed to secure a future for SummerClan that moved them away from the fear of rebuttal from NightClan, or fear another clan might come for them again, but the doubts were more piercing than pterodactyls in her gut.
"Leading the clan," she echoed, and she fell quiet in thought. It was everything Sunstar ever wanted... and everything she didn't. She wasn't new to this world- sitting in on her father's meetings with his staff ever since she was young- so that afforded her a better grasp of how thing worked, but the dawning realization that an entire clan relied on and looked to her for guidance was something none of that could have prepared her for. She glanced from Sunpaw to the deepening sky, a few stars beginning to appear. "It's exhausting, but rewarding. Every day that we get to sleep when the sun sets, it's a win. Every day an apprentice comes back with a new skill, it's a victory. Life's moving on after all that we went through, and I get to lead us through it. I'm scared all the time and worried," she confessed, an aching guilt in her voice, "that I won't meet the expectations the clan has for me, but... It's okay. I'm proud of myself." And Sunpetal is, too.
Chuckling a bit to cut the edge of nerves, she fixated on the apprentice again. "Anyway, that's not what I came here to talk with you about. How's your training with Howlingheart going?"

Her brows were knitted in a moment; for a second she almost expected the whole leadership spiel, the same type of spiel she'd give whenever someone congratulated her about her new role or asked her about her training, the one she'd give with a slightly-forced smile and a nervous flicker of her eyes, but she was almost relieved when Sunstar really started talking about it.
Exhausting and rewarding sounded about right. "There's a lot on your shoulders right now," she replied sympathetically, "to be honest, I'm kind of feeling the same, I guess? It's like, Vulturemalice always knew what he was doing, you know? He was just really good at finding herbs and knowing what everything does and he was so confident...and sometimes it's hard to...match up, I guess..."
She chuckled, before giving Sunstar a sly look. "Weird how they made the two of us in charge of the clan," she joked, "wasn't it just a few months ago when we were getting into trouble with badgers and all that?"
