11.06.2022 The site has been transformed into an archive. Thank you for all the memories here!
Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Hi guys! To begin our tenure as admins, I’d love to get some feedback on what you think could be improved on Classic. These could be ideas for things you think could be fun or cool; suggestions for things that could be improved; things you don’t think are working or that you’re not happy with or that stress you out; anything you’d like to put on the table! These can apply to the main site, the revamp site, and the discord — anything <3
In lieu of a first Comms report, given the newness of all of this, I’d like to use your feedback to give us admins a greater sense of what needs focus, and possibly as the foundation of the first agenda for the next staff meeting. To clarify, in the future, there will be a section under my monthly reports for you all (RUs, everyone!) to raise suggestions, concerns, and ideas that will then be compiled as points for the next scheduled staff discussion, to aid transparency, a clear flow of information between the main site and staff and back, and avoid any surprises in meetings/discussions. For now, this feedback will help us to get started and add to the topics we already have in mind, which include the inclusion of deputies in mod/leader discussions, admin term limits, and clarifying the impeachment process to make it fairer to non-admins. These meetings may take place on the leader board for now so (currently) non-mods can have a full voice <3
Some examples of what I’m most interested in hearing about are:
Thoughts on current activity requirements; what might a good number be, if any?
Interest in things like site-wide plots — where have they failed in the past, and where have they succeeded?
Are there any pages on the site you struggle to read? We want to make everything more accessible!
Is there anything that isn’t making you happy at the moment? Anything causing stress?
Is there something that’s really good and that you’d like more of?
Anything that you think could be improved, gotten rid of, or added, no matter how small.
Simplylight is also asking for suggestions on what you’d like to see out of Of The Month/Of The Year awards HERE, if you’d like to share some ideas.
Please limit yourself to ONE reply; feel free to go back and edit it to add points or agree with other people, but this won't be a discussion, just a catalogue of your thoughts and ideas! That way it’ll be much easier to sift through <3
Obviously, there’s no guarantee that everything you suggest will be put into action; this is just to get a preliminary sense of how the site is feeling and where any open wounds may be <3
some things currently in the works: encouraged leave for all users + a spreadsheet to keep track of who has and hasn't taken it (CM); un-reachable hours for any users who want them + a spreadsheet to list any hours users don't want to be contacted about business (CM); updating the etiquette guide in the leaders’ section to make it more compassionate (CM); creating a new clan information section to make navigation easier (LM); archiving all layouts in a codepen (LM); a system of mental health check-ins for all staff (CM); revising OTM/Y awards and creating a bunch of fun new things (EM); revising how we advertise and what we devote time and resources to (OM); cleaning up the revamp site (OM); and continuing to advise on activity (AM) ♡
I wanted to say that I think this is a cool idea! I am kind of shy so I have had some things on my mind since joining but have a difficult time initiating conversations so this is perfect!
Some things I was thinking about since joining: - I would love to see a history section that includes the history of each clan and how they have changed over the years the site has been active. I have always been interested in how clans have changed and what leaders were in power prior to the current ones and how those leaders/deputies/medicine cats have impacted the lore of the clan! I am a new member so I don't know much about the history of the clans, and I think it would be beneficial for those who are new to understand the lore as they roleplay out in each clan! I think this is important too since in the description of the site it is mentioned there is over a decades worth of lore :3
- Who are staff of the site? Obviously the administrators are easy to determine since there is links to the profiles, but when I went to view staff under the staff section I noticed there was a lot of different roles. It lists leaders and deputies as staff, but then there is also moderators as well. I am assuming that leaders and deputies make decisions for their clans, while moderators and administrators make decisions for the site. I am just a registered user so maybe this is overstepping my boundaries, but do the leaders and deputies also get a say when there is a decision to make for the site? As there seems to be only 9 moderators and administrators, which does not seem like a lot for the amount of users that seem to be active on this site, but if leaders and deputies are counted and basically the same as moderators then it is not as bad! What is the job of each role that is under the staff tab? I was also wondering if RUs will get to give their input, but you already kind of answered that for me! UPDATE: I am now reviewing the staff rules and see that leaders are basically moderators. I assume they are just listed differently so people know they are clan leaders :3
- I noticed that there is a current discussion for term limits. On other sites I have been a part of there was either no term limits at all or there was strict term limits to ensure there is no risk of burn out. I think term limits could be helpful as I found that sites without term limits would have staff members on staff for years and there would be certain staff members who experienced severe burnout as a result. I think term limits would be good!
- I didn't realize there was activity requirements for the site. I personally work full-time, so roleplaying is a hobby for me. Do Registered Users have an activity requirement as well? and for the users who do have activity requirements, what are those requirements? I want to ensure the new friends I have made are able to reach their goal! On other sites I have been on there was activity requirements that were either really strict such as 20 posts a week, or not as strict but wanting to ensure the person doesn't just vanish such as 5 posts a week. I found a mixture of how activity played out. The sites that had strict activity requirements seemed to have more users leave the site because they were unable to handle the requirement plus their responsibilities irl, but they did seem to have more overall activity. The sites that had less strict activity requirements had less users leave but less overall activity. I did find though that the sites with the less strict activity requirements had well planned out plots that were not abandoned halfway through because people had the time to dedicate to their plots!
- As I am reading through the staff rules, I was curious how warnings work on the site. The staff rules say that moderators have the power to give users warnings and that three warnings result in a ban. On other sites I have been a part of, usually warnings/strikes and bans are discussed as a staff as sometimes new members especially will make mistakes. Is that the case here as well? or can a moderator give a warning without any discussion with other staff members? and how long are the bans? On some sites I have been on bans are permanent, which I have always felt is severe depending on what the infractions were, but on other sites certain warnings only gave a dedicated amount of time that a user is banned for. I was part of a site before that did not allow cussing, and if a user cussed 3 times in a row they would only be banned for three weeks (1 week per warning) because the infraction was not severe. Is this site similar? and how does individual cases work? On other sites the users were given the chance to apologize and explain why they broke the rules. Do users get that chance? UPDATE: I noticed in the staff rules that users can get in trouble for telling another user they are being discussed. Shouldn't users be given a heads up that they are being discussed by staff? As it seems kind of harsh to ban or give a member a warning/strike without at least telling them they are being discussed for breaking a rule
I think those are all my concerns and ideas! Thanks so much for reading and giving us the chance to help make decisions or give our input!
Thoughts on current activity requirements; what might a good number be, if any? I honest to god already forgot what the current ones are, so they're proooooooobably fine.
Thoughts on current activity requirements; what might a good number be, if any? I like site-wide plots for the most part, but you won't get anything more specific than that out of me because I've forgotten all the ones we've done xD For plots that involve multiple Clans, there probably needs to be some kind of easily accessible cliffnotes-style summary of the plot that lays it out in very simple terms. I'm looking at you, Forest Clans. And I lead one!
Are there any pages on the site you struggle to read? We want to make everything more accessible! It's not that I struggle to read them but both the rules and the staff rules page could probably be updated. And the homepage, though I think Aud had something planned for that iirc. The revamp site skin is a bit dodgy (buttons being invisible due to being the same colour as the background, the header bar being really thick for some reason). The herbs page's images are all dead links.
Is there anything that isn’t making you happy at the moment? Anything causing stress? nahh
Is there something that’s really good and that you’d like more of? I like everything I don't talk about in this post.
Anything that you think could be improved, gotten rid of, or added, no matter how small.
I think mate logs are kind of useless in their current state. It's just such a slog to effectively have to add a character in two places. Plus, I don't know about everyone else but I just...do not look at them ever xD
I think we should have more general discussions on the site. We used to have random, chatty threads a lot when we were on Wikifoundry, but once we moved to Proboards we just sort of started having those conversations on Skype and later Discord, which not everyone has. It might make it a lot more friendly for new users if they could chat with someone on the site rather than having to join our Discord server, which just feels a lot more...personal, to me? I'm shy (though you wouldn't know it because I never shut up!), but if I were a new user I'd be much more likely to feel comfortable posting on the site rather than posting in the Discord.
Why is the revamp site still called the revamp site when there's maybe one and a half revamp competitions a year? Can we rename it something more...relevant? xD
I want to check in with the other Forest Clan leaders and see what their thoughts on elementals are, since DayClan, NightClan and SunClan all have new leaders. That's not really an 'admin' issue (aside from you fox <3) but I'll literally forget if I don't write it down here xD
Thoughts on current activity requirements; what might a good number be, if any? I'm fine with what we have for the moment. Interest in things like site-wide plots — where have they failed in the past, and where have they succeeded? I have not seen a site wide plot done with the exception of the one plot in January 2020 which was one built more of necessity and since we were recovering from all the chaos that had preceded that plot I think it worked because everyone was able to just jump in. Someone kind of just has to take charge and just do it. I have been dying to do a world war classic, but I think I'll just settle for SunClan fighting everyone and then everyone they fought eventually coming back and striking back. Mostly because a war plot is tricky since there are those that would want to be neutral and those that wouldn't want to lose, and it's hard to find justification for battles unfortunately. Whereas is there's one antagonist then it's easy to point to them. But I loved when during xxsaphire's reign as Vera E'tani, Vera really felt like a present villain. She attacked DayClan, was negotiating in NightClan, attacked many clans and groups. She was an interesting threat and made a point to engage other clans. And since I had just joined back when Vera was around, it felt like Tigerstar. And then there was characters like Foxstar (gosh Foxstar was so good), learning the Deal lore, Kerrigan was great (Red Lioness Pride represent!), Aspenstar recently was also super interesting! I loved following her stories, and I loved how she introduced Kier. Also the story of how Blakelystar was a villain that used her lives to make enemies for cats to fight. This went from me talking about site wide stuff to plots that spanned more than one clan and the leaders/main cats at the helm Bloodycrow was also great, I loved to hate that guy XP. I guess what makes sitewide plots work is when there's someone with a vision and they come in and let everyone build off it. Bloody was the product of Racer and JAde. xxsaphire worked with numerous users I imagine (I think they plotted with Theatricals, ian and blue for the Vera stuff) But also again the only 'site wide' plot I experienced was really that plot in January 2020 when Flamingstar (spot) and Kotori (Faith) tried to flood all of Classic with help from their followers and everyone rose up to stop them Are there any pages on the site you struggle to read? We want to make everything more accessible! -None that I can think of. Is there anything that isn’t making you happy at the moment? Anything causing stress? -Nothing I'd feel comfortable saying, Classic isn't a safe space anymore seeing as it chased off some of its most dedicated members. Anything that you think could be improved, gotten rid of, or added, no matter how small. -biyuu ☆彡 I like elementals. I don't do much with them admittedly, but I like that explanation existing for some magic. So that way if say you want your character to have something like plant growing capabilities or get stronger at different points in time. I'm very much someone of if it makes people happy I'm all for it! Even if I don't use it so much.
