It was hard being an apprentice. He didn't care what the warriors had to say about, "just wait until you're old and have to do real jobs." That sounds great and all, Fancyfoot, but you don't have to pick ticks off the elders and sweep out smelly old bedding. They say you earn the title of warrior after doing those jobs, but he thought that was just an excuse. Shuffling another pile of stale feathers and moss to the side, Snakepaw let out a long huff and turned to lick the fur on his back. Ew, it tasted like old cat. "This stinks." He sniffed.
A small calico kitten poked her head into the elder's den where she heard rustling and grumbling. Spotting the disgruntled apprentice she bounced over and squeaked, "Whatcha doinn'?"

Snakepaw nearly jumped out of his fur at the sudden squeak of the kitten. "Ah...uh..umm...." He stammered, not wanting to crush the little one's apprentice dreams. "Just doing elder duty." The white tom puffed out his chest a little to make it look like this job was super important.
The she-kit's eyes widened at this and she stood taller. "Ooh! Can I help?" She mewed brightly, kneading her paws a bit. As if she were trying to convince him, she added, "I'm a good helper, swear!" Chestnutkit looked at him with pleading eyes, hoping she wouldn't have to go back to rolling around by herself in a vain attempt to entertain herself.
