Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Chim had returned to the clan for Lovearrow's funeral, and had taken off almost immediately after. He had made it out of their territory but was still several days walk from home when he fell and injured his paw.
Usually, Chim would have ignored the twinge of pain and continued on, but a part of him longed to go back to his old clan and see a few more familiar faces -- not that he'd ever admit it.
So he turned his paws back to the clan and limped the way home.
Chim ignored the eyes on him as he entered SwiftClan's camp, gritting his back teeth as he limped into the medicine cat's den and flopped on the ground near the entrance. "Firetooth, I need you to look--" he began, but paused when his half-gaze fell upon the medicine cat, who was certainly not Firetooth.
She'd heard a cat enter the den, and had turned the moment she recognized his voice.
Chimera was met with the shining violet eyes of a beautiful tortoiseshell feline. A deep purr radiated from her chest as she felt happiness overcome her. She never had parents growing up, but Chimera had been the closest she'd ever had to one. He was almost like her dad, but she'd never tell the grumpy old cat that.
She rushed forward and pushed her nose in his chest furs. "I missed you."
Chim stared at Violeteyes in shock. It was impossible, how could she...? He blinked twice, wondering if he was dead too. Then she began to purr, and it finally clicked.
Meadoweyes.
Though he was disappointed it wasn't her mother, he wasn't upset; on the contrary, the old tom couldn't help a hint of a smile from forming on his face as affection surged through him. "I didn't know you were here," he murmured, nuzzling her ears briefly. "When did you--- you're a medicine cat now?"
Meadoweyes nuzzled into him a little deeper, enjoying the comforting scent of the tom. Finally she pulled away and sat down, her tail curling over her front paws neatly as she gazed at him, awaiting to see if he would be proud of her. She truly hoped so, and she nodded eagerly. "Yes! Straybullet and I are SwiftClan's medicine cats now. It's a bit different, but I think that StarClan would agree it was the best for the clan. I have yet to visit them yet, but I do hope they accept me. Do you think they will..?"
Meadoweyes paused, and lowered her voice, admitting something she found a bit selfish. "I was hoping... I was hoping I may get to see Violetstar when I went. Do you think I will see her?" Her voice was almost a whisper, as if she were admitting one of the most wrong things in the world, because that had been part of the reason she'd be so ready to accept such a position.
Having never met her mother, aside from being newborn, she'd always dreamed somehow she could have a bond with her, despite death.
He tipped his head to the side, filing the information away. It was a lot to process at once — Firetooth was no longer medicine cat, but the camp still smelled of him, so he must have retired; Meadoweyes was in the clan and a medicine cat at that; it was ‘different’ that she was a healer and they needed to appease StarClan somehow. His mind was slow, he hadn’t faced such critical thought in a few moons, and he blinked slowly as he put it together.
“StarClan would be fools not to accept you,” he agreed. He didn’t say it gently, but matter-of-fact. It wasn’t a compliment, just the truth. “I don’t know what happens to medicine cats when they visit StarClan. That’s private information. The same is true for leaders.” Which meant he ought not tell her anything about his experiences, but he wasn’t a clan cat anymore.
“Violetstar is in StarClan; I saw her there myself, when she have me one of my nine loves.” His eyes were misty with the memory, but nodded once, with finality. “She’ll be waiting for you.”
Her eyes shone as if they had the stars in them in that very moment. Violetstar was in StarClan, and she knew that for sure. Meadoweyes could hardly wait, what if she did get to see her mother when she went for her medicine ceremony? Her tail gave a nervous twitch, but excited none the less. "Oh.. Chimera, what are you doing here? Is there something wrong?" It suddenly hit her, in the excitement to see him... She'd realized now that it was rare to see him around here. In fact, she hadn't seen the tom in some time anyways.
"Are you sick?" She began to sniff at his fur, as if quickly trying to access what could be ailing him.
Chim blinked once, his eye confused, before he remembered why he had come. It took a moment to pull himself from reverie.
"I'm not sure," he assured her, then his mouth quirked down in a frown, "I hope." The last sick cat he'd seen was Lovearrow. She had come to visit him and saved his life from a rabid fox, but was bitten in the process, and Chim had to put her down. He didn't think she had bitten him, but he shuddered to think of it.
"I just tripped and hurt my paw, that's all. It's probably nothing." He shifted to hold out his left forepaw. It was already swelling.
At once she went to looking at his paw. It was visibly swollen. Her ears flicked back as she sent her violet eyes upwards to gaze at his face in worry. "How long have you been like this, Chim?" She asked worriedly.
He shrugged. "Not long; a few hours. I was outside of SwiftClan land and heading back to home. I would have gone on without wasting your prey, but it's a few days journey from here to my den. I just need some poppy seeds and I'll head back out."
"Absolutely not." Meadoweyes blinked, looking back up at him and shaking her head. "You're staying here, and you don't have a choice in that." Her words seemed stern, yet soft all the same. She was unwilling to budge in this, and her eyes held a fire that said so.
Meadoweyes huffed slightly. She finally stood and went to the herb pile, looking through them thoughtfully. "Did you know medicine cats are really good at telling the difference between truth and lies?" Her tone was normal, as if having a normal conversation. However, this said that it was clear she did not believe what the tom was telling her. She'd have to know the truth to figure out how to treat this, and she was weary that this might even be life threatening.
“I know medicine cats are really good at telling lies,” he replied mildly. It wasn’t an attack on her; he was thinking of Firetooth. His conflict with his former medicine cat has run deep and he had never quite forgiven the stubborn tom.
He stretched out his toes on his injured paw, wincing, and tucked his healthy paw under his chest. “I don’t see why it matters.”
She spun around, violet eyes gazing back at the tom seriously. "I have to know the true origin to treat you, Chimerahunt. Stop being stubborn." Her tail lashed behind her form, and in that exact moment she was looking much like her mother.
Chim glared back at her, but the resemblance was too much; pain filled his gaze and he looked away.
"I was reaching through a pile of stones, trying to... find something. I went too far, my paw got stuck. When I injured it when I finally pulled it free."
She was not convinced, however, she once more moved forward to peer at his paw. Carefully turning it between her own and examining it for any punctures or anything of the like.
