The earthquake had been frightening, but a blessing in disguise.
The Dominion had fled their lands. Though if it would be permanent or just for now. They were still gone and that was what mattered in the moment.
Especially after what they had put them through.
When Skipstep got his claws on them!
But that wasn't important right now.
What was important was caring for Littlestar, and the rest of the clan. They'd all come back together. Reunited families broken up by the dominion, all blessedly before anything truly terrible could happen.
Right now they needed to heal, to grow stronger. They knew now what they were up against, and hopefully they now had time to prepare.
In the meanwhile, Littlestar needed to heal, so Skipstep picked up a smallish rabbit. Rather scrawny but it would have to do, and took it over to Littlestar's den.
Before the clan had come back together, Littlestar had declared him Priest Promised, something that gnawed at him. He hoped she wasn't so unwell she feared she might die and wanted the clan secure.
The thought sent shudders down his spine and he quickened his pace so he could be back beside her once more.

Littlestar was in fact not doing well...
Her dip into the icy river over and over again, causing her to develop both frost bite and pneumonia. The tip of her tail was blackened, and oozing a foul liquid. Each breath a raspy struggle, and running a high fever. She had suffered several wounds at the paws of the dominion, though they had since been treated and the bleeding stopped. He mate didn' know it yet, but she did... Part of her tail would have to be removed once she was well enough to handle the procedure. For now she had applied ointments to keep the infection to spreading to healthy tissue
However, it wasn't her health problems which has caused her to name her mate as Priest Promised. It was the visions that plagued her of what was to come. Her mate being swallowed by the earth, which she stood by helpless to help. His life ending before her eyes... The images she had seen before had come true, so she didn't doubt this one would either...
"Skipstep" she greeted softly, interrupted by a cough
Skipstep set down the prey and moved over to where some herbs had been put aside to reapply to her injuries and try to help treat her sickness.
"I'm here," He assured her, bending down to give her a gentle lick between the ears. "Sorry, the clan was troubled. But everyone is back for the most part."
A few cats were missing, but they were doing all they could to find everyone. OR at least recover bodies.
They were so fortunate the dominion hadn't been here too long to really damage their home.
He opted to gloss over the missing cats for now, Littlestar could deal with it when she was better...
If she got better.
There was a sense of something in the air.
A creeping concern that had grown the moment Littlestar named him her successor.
Skipstep never wanted to lead a clan without her. He wasn't even sure he'd want to lead a life without her. Making him her successor now only told him something he had been suspecting.
Littlestar had been through far too much. And she... she needed him to step up.
Seeing her now, so unwell and miserable. How much suffering she'd endured, it made his stomach twist.
She deserved a break. For someone else to shoulder that burden. At the very least to give her a chance to finally recover, after all the times it seemed she never got to.
"I brought you some prey." He said, trying to banish the thoughts by focusing on the present moment. On the thing he could try to help with besides redressing her wounds. "It's not your favorite, but I thought some rabbit would do you good when you're ready to eat." He said trying to keep his voice light as he nodded to it.

Littlestar nodded meekly, taking a small bite of the rabbit to make her mate feel a little better, even though it made her stomach roll in protest. She snuggled in close to Skipstep, her paws wrapping around his thin frame to pull him in closer with her head resting on his chest. She closed her eyes listening to his heat beat for a few moments before speaking
"Tonight... I need you to go to the temple, and receive your nine lives" her eyes slowly opened to meet his. Her voice soft but firm
Skipstep took in a breath and let it out slowly as she spoke meeting her gaze.
"I had thought that was likely the case." Skipstep said softly. "I don't think I could ever be as good of a leader as you are my love." He admitted.
He let out a sigh and snuggled closer to her.
"But I've watched you suffer for so long," He mumbled, tightening his hold on her. Like he could hold her tight and keep her safe from the monsters, and literal demons that had come after them and their clan. "I will step up and relieve this burden from you."
He rested his head against hers closing his eyes and just taking a moment to feel her, and be wrapped around in her scent, her presence. Her simple existence. Without her he was lost.
And he risked losing her more and more every day.
"But if I get nine lives, then this will be permanent." He warned her. As much as he wanted to take this burden from her, he wanted to make sure she knew what she was doing. "It won't be easy to simply switch back after this. I want you to have ample time to recover, but you've done so much. I don't want you to feel you have to sit idly by while I mess up."
"And I will mess up." He confessed. "I've never been the young god you and even Foxstar presented yourselves as. I am very very mortal. A mortal tom who's failed before, and will fail again. I want to relieve you of your burden. I want you well, I want you to enjoy the joy I've felt, and I do feel it's my turn to lift this burden."
"But I want you to be certain you really want this to be permanent. Because once I have nine lives. I want to spend them making sure you get to spend your days with our family, to let me make the sacrifices and hard decisions as leader, and for you to feel freed from it. Because that is the only way it'll be fair."
"I'll of course still seek your council, as you have of me." Skipstep added, a lighter note to the seriousness of his words. "I would never disregard your experience, but I want you to live freely. To know that if I make a mistake it's on me and not on you."
"If I get these nine lives, I will be leader of our clan, until I either have to retire, or perish in the line of duty. It will serve as not only my promise to the clan but my promise to you. I will take this weight now, and you will be freed from the heavy burden, and freed to spend the rest of your days as you want loved and hopefully at peace."
AS he spoke he could envision such a future. A Littlestar comfortably resting, settled beside their children. No other worries besides occasionally advising him, but spending most of her time content and freed. No more demons haunting her for being the strongest tether to a now absent god. No more enemies looking to overthrow her in their pursuit of their own ambitions. No more enemies from beyond putting the failings and evils that SunClan had committed at her paws, regardless of whether she was truly to blame.
Just Littlestar finally able to have peace.
His heart longed to give it to her, but he wanted her to be certain.
He couldn't make such a choice for her. Forcing 'peace' or 'perfection' on someone else wasn't truly peace. That was putting them in a cage, and Skipstep loved his mate too much to ever risk such a possibility.
He wanted her to be happy.
So he made sure she knew he'd be flawed. He'd do his best of course, he always had. When he'd been a janus under Foxstar, and as a Janus under her and as a father. He'd never been perfect. But he did his best for the things and cats he loved.
It was just important she make this decision with no regrets, because Skipstep wouldn't be able to bear it if something happened and she felt obligated to step back up. He didn't want her to be waiting for when she'd feel called back to the role.
If he took nine lives and became Skipstar, he wanted it to mean Littlestar didn't have to be Littlestar anymore.
She could be Littlebird again, except finally free to fly as she had never been allowed to be before. As the WinterClan leader's daughter, as the Priestess Promised of SunClan, and as the High Priestess of SunClan. She would have the freedom from the heavy burdens that had dragged her down. A freedom Skipstep had enjoyed for so long.
He knew what expectations could do. How they could be so heavy and drag you down. He'd seen it in his sister, and he'd seen it in Littlestar, in the numerous injuries and struggles.
He would never try to blot out his mate's struggles, her victories. They'd only proven how strong she was. But he wanted her to accept rest fully and willingly.
