A soft breeze blew through Crowflight's black and white fur as he stood on a large boulder looking out across the rabbit meadow. Although the sun was shining, a shiver ran down his back. Gray clouds in the western sky were amassing, perhaps they were snow clouds. It had snowed three days earlier but it hadn't amounted to much leaving him feeling a bit disappointed. The warriors had talked about massive amounts of snow falling from the sky, sometimes measuring deeper than an average cat's height. This last snow was a little less than a dusting and now most of that had already evaporated away.
He sighed as his gaze continued over the brownish green grass that used to be lush and bright green just two months ago. Leafbare so far hadn't been very exciting. Well at least SummerClan was no longer oppressed by NightClan anymore, he could be glad about that! Just then he heard a leaf crackle. Someone was coming.

While Crowflight was already a warrior, Sunpaw was still an apprentice, though no longer training to be a warrior anymore. While the herby leaves weren't often ready in the cold, the juniper berries were perfect for this season. A branch of them were held gently in her mouth, as she trotted onwards, only stopping when she spotted the dark tom, her ears immediately perking up.
She waved him over with a tail as she trotted over. "Crowflight!" she greeted, her voice muffled by the berries in her mouth. It felt like it had been forever since they had seen each other; after the fight, there had been so much to do that they had never really had time to chat. "I didn't expect to see you around here."

The black and white tom's eyes widened in delight to see his friend. When was the last time they really talked and spent time together? Oh, yes! It was the day they climbed that large tree, the largest one in their territory.
"Sunpaw! So glad to see you!" Crowflight meowed. Not only was he smiling with his mouth, his eyes were smiling as well. "I was just debating on whether I should go into the rabbit meadow or try hunting somewhere else." He noticed the berries she was carrying in her mouth and remembered she had changed her training. Now that he thought about it, she seemed better suited to becoming a Garden Keeper. "So how do you like your change in training?"

She gave him a sunny grin, though she still seemed kind of sheepish. The last time she could remember being with him was during that battle, and she couldn't help but feel rather embarrassed, about how he had been witness to one of the strangest moments of her life. She knew it was silly to be embarrassed by everything, but the fact that the tom knew how much she feared water and well...that tiff with the NightClan warrior...there was just a lot to pretend as if nothing had happened.
Sunpaw had to admit she was glad he didn't bring it up yet. She knew word travelled fast about her change in training. "It's..." she started, "it's a lot to learn...Vulturemalice isn't around anymore so Howlingheart's been taking over my training but...I guess sometimes I'm worried I won't actually make a good medicine cat, you know?"

Being so busy trying to help SummerClan get back on it's feet since their liberation from NightClan had kept Crowflight so occupied that he had forgotten Sunpaw was training to be a medicine cat not a garden keeper. Now it came back to him. He was so glad he hadn't spoken his thoughts out loud. She'd probably think he was a scatter brain, even though he felt that way more often than not lately.
As she spoke, memories of their mad dash to the sea came back to mind as well. Back then he felt excited and a little bit scared, not that he'd admit it though. He never totally understood what all went on with Sunpaw and that NightClan cat -- what was his name? Oh, yes, Moonblight -- but he did remember she told him later that he was her brother. Apparently she hadn't known it until then. But none of that really mattered to Crowflight. He was half clan so he couldn't fault others for things beyond their control.
He kept his promise that night to Sunpaw and helped her through her scary time in the water. It was just after all that happened he was made a warrior due to his bravery during the battle. The wonderful feeling of pride he felt then came back to him right now. That must be how Sunpaw felt when she was chosen to follow a different path. "You'll be the best," he meowed earnestly. "I can't think of any cat better suited for the task than you." Then he looked around and lowered his voice, "To tell you the truth, I think you'll be even better at it than my uncle Graythorn was. At least you won't snap off cats' heads when they come to you for help." He did like his uncle and he still felt sorry for the accident he had that took away his hearing.

A blush crossed her cheeks at his words. She still had her own doubts; Vulturemalice had left so abruptly, and she had only started her training when everything had happened. Sunstar had assigned her adopted father, Howlingheart, to teach her the skills she was missing, but it was still nerve-wracking, to be so behind and yet responsible for all of SummerClan's health.
"Thank you," she replied earnestly, her smile both flustered and pleased, before she peeked up at him once more, "to be honest, sometimes it's kind of scary, you know? Being responsible for everything and everyone? It's just...a lot of things to learn and...I sort of miss Vulturemalice. He was a really good friend too."
The battle between SummerClan and NightClan had clawed open wounds for everyone in the clan. Still, life had to go on. "I'm glad you trust me though," there was a humour in her voice, "I'll try not to accidentally poison you if you ever need my help."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Jan 27, 2022 14:56:50 GMT -5
"I do trust you," Crowflight purred. "But if you do accidentally poison me, I'll get some fairies to attack you! Just think about it - you being chased around the camp by fluffy ones during the day and glowing ones at night." The image in his mind made him laugh out loud.
"No seriously, you'll make a great medicine cat." He glanced over at the rabbit meadow and then looked back at Sunpaw. "You know, I can help you with you're gathering now. I can hunt later." There had been no fresh scents coming from the meadow at the moment so hunting there now would probably be an effort in futility.

She laughed at that. "I'll try my best not to," she replied with a serious nod, before breaking out into another peal of laughter, "if I do poison you, I know you'll end up haunting me for the rest of my life and I don't really want to see other ghosts." She gave him a smile, and his compliment sent warmth to her cheeks. She was glad at least some of the cats around here trusted in her ability; she herself still found it hard to believe.
Her expression brightened at the tom's suggestion. "Really?" she asked brightly, "well if you're really sure...there are a few things I uh...find difficult to collect." A sheepish look appeared on her face. "Mostly the seaweed on the beach, you know?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 4, 2022 15:29:14 GMT -5
Her comment about not wanting to see 'other ghosts' surprised him. Had she seen ghosts? But then he realized it must have something to do with being a medicine cat. They do talk with StarClan and they would be considered ghosts. Yeah, that must be it.
Crowflight smiled again. "Oh, yes," he mewed teasingly. "You mustn't get your paws wet." He flicked one of her ears with his tail tip. "No seriously, I'll be glad to help you out." He knew how afraid she was to get into the water. It wasn't a favorite thing for him to do but it didn't bother him. "Ready to go?"

She flushed pink. "Oh shut up," she replied, looking both flustered and amused, "I don't know why everyone likes swimming so much, it's so creepy not being able to see where your feet are." She shuddered at the thought. It was an unusual quirk for a SummerClan cat, but she wasn't born here either.
Still, she was grateful for the help. "Yeah, let's," she replied with a pep in her step, "maybe we'll get all we need for the winter today." The beach wasn't too far away; she could already feel the seaward breezes in the distance. "So how have you been? Everyone's so busy these days."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 5, 2022 19:46:27 GMT -5
"Busy," he mewed with a teasing smile. "I've had the wonderful job of cleaning up any remaining NightClan stink on our territory along with hunting and border patrols. Actually today is the first time I had to myself in days." Glancing over at Sunpaw as they walked side by side, he realized just how much he missed times like these. "It seemed like forever since I had any time to do what I want. I'm glad we ran into each other today."
From the direction of the ocean, a seagull's cry could be heard along with the low roar of the waves hitting the beach. "It's been awhile since I've been here. Actually only once since our revolution."

The mention of NightClan made her skin crawl; she could still remember the terror of being dragged back into camp by that menace of a loyal guard, how Rosethorn had almost died and how Foxpaw had to witness it all...a shudder ran down her spine. "I hope they never come around again," she muttered, almost a growl in her throat.
The trauma of the invasion was still in the bones of the cats who had lived through it. She sighed. "I wonder when we'll finally forget it," she replied with a quiet laugh, before looking out to the beach. Once, it was a place to seek hidden treasures, and now it was marked by their need to find a refuge from their invaders just moons ago.

"We should never forget it," Crowflight meowed with determination in his voice. "If we do, we could let something like that happen to us again. I made a vow to myself that I'll do everything in my power to prevent it in the future or die trying. I refuse to become a slave again in my own home." While he spoke, his neck fur rose around his neck. "Sorry," he meowed shaking his fur in an effort to resettle it. "I get all worked up about all that if I think about too much."

She gave him a look that said that she understood exactly. "Yeah," she replied with a sigh, before giving a sheepish laugh, "gods, I was so terrified when we were running away, I thought everyone could tell I was practically shaking in my bones. I honestly thought I might die." She probably would've, had it not been for Sagebristle.
Still, things were at least looking better. "At least now, we're all better, and with the coast guard and all the new teams to defend SummerClan, maybe things will look better, you know?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 13, 2022 18:11:11 GMT -5
Crowflight nodded his head in agreement. "I hope so," he mewed. "I can't think of anything worse than what we've already experienced." Truth was he was afraid that night they won their freedom. He wasn't afraid so much for himself as he was for the whole of SummerClan. He wanted his clan to be free once again and he was afraid they might fail. But thank StarClan they didn't!
He stopped walking near the water's edge and turned back to his companion. "Well Sunpaw, where is this seaweed you need to have?" A roller came up on the beach but receded just a few tail lengths from his paws.

She gave him a faint smile. Truthfully, she had her own worries and doubts, and part of her wondered if it truly was the worst. She'd hate for anything worse to happen but she couldn't help but wonder at times what else was waiting for SummerClan. Still, she could only hope and pray to StarClan that things would just go smoothly from here.
"Seaweed," she nodded. Right, seaweed. She looked around, the tide receding so the rocks jutting out, "do you see over there?" She trotted over to a bunch of the leafy things hanging by the rocks. "The red ones we can use, and the dark ones that look like sheets...we can take some of those too, but leave the yellow ones. Those ones aren't really....useful."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 20, 2022 15:18:18 GMT -5
"Okay, so get red ones and dark ones but not yellow, check," Crowflight said. He started to turn away to gather the herbs but stopped and looked back at Sunpaw. With a grin he added, "What's wrong with the yellow seaweed? Does it have the same problem as yellow snow?" Somehow just being around Sunpaw made him less serious and he liked that.

A giggle left her mouth at the mention of yellow snow; she had heard the jokes and stories that came from the apprentice den about never licking it, but still, it was such a silly joke it still made her giggle these days. "No, not really, but they're not very nice, they're a bit leafy, you know? Also they just...don't really do much. The thick black kelp helps with bandaging, and the red one's good for energy and all, but the yellow one's just...not really useful at all..."
She bounded off to a nearby stone. "Look!" she grinned at him, "isn't it weird? It's like the sea has its own meadow like ours, they have so many weird grasses..."

Looking closer into the water, the swaying seaweed started to become mesmerizing to Crowflight. His body began to move to the soothing rhythm of their dance. It was an effort, but he came back to his senses by giving his head a shake to clear it. "Wow, you can get lost by just watching those things move," he meowed. Then he went over to where the weeds were that needed collecting. He was careful not to concentrate on them this time so he wouldn't become hypnotized again.
After removing several paw fulls of the seaweed, he discovered some interesting looking creatures on the bottom of the sand. They all had five legs like a star and were various colors. Some were pink while others were orange and blue. They all were very pretty. He smiled as a thought came to his mind. "Hey Sunpaw!" he called. "You've got to see this! Did you know the ocean has fairies living in it?"

Sunpaw giggled as she watched the intense look on Crowflight's face as he stared at the seaweed, looking oh so lost in the moment as he stared at the way the water rippled and shifted. Personally, she had always felt it kinda gross to walk around the seaweed, mostly because she had no idea what was under the murky water, and whenever something touched her paws when she was in the water, it'd make her jump.
Still, when the other cat beckoned her over, she grimaced slightly before carefully stepping into the water, in that teeter-totter way she walked whenever her paws were wet. "What do you mean ocean fairies?" she asked, "aren't those technically mermaids?"
