Howlingheart let out a sigh as he stood at the entrance to the medicine cat's den. So, this would be his home for the foreseeable future. If the circumstances were different, he would have returned back to the garden keepers den. It would have been someone else's problem that Vulturemalice was gone. After all, the fight with his brother had brought up old wounds, wounds that had never quite healed. Adding more stress to that was probably not the best idea. However, the situation was not different. The cats he loved were involved. When he had been approached, he had been made quickly clear that his daughter was going to be the next medicine cat once she was trained. She needed someone to train her, and when Rosethorn asked him if he would be able to, he found himself unable to say no. She had played on his heart strings: the two most important cats in his life needed them, and he couldn't say no. He could never say no to either of them, could never let either of them struggle unnecessarily. So, there he was.
The tom took one last moment of hesitation at the entrance of the den. Despite everything, the tom had legitimate doubts that this was a position for him, even if temporarily. Thanks to moons of depression after the loss of his sister, Howlingheart had spent time in the medicine den, he did have a working knowledge of the protocol, he was one of the top garden keepers. But, what if that wasn't good enough? He wanted to help Sunpaw, but what if he couldn't?
He frowned. No, this was not a time for self-doubt. Sunpaw needed him. He would figure it out for her. He shook the thoughts from his head, before poking it into the den. "Sunny, are you in there?"

The apprentice peeked her head in almost immediately, her hazel eyes bright at the sight of her adopted father, and a grin as bright as her namesake already on her face. "Howlingheart!" she greeted with a laugh, as she trotted over, immediately brushing against his fur as a greeting. While she missed Vulturemalice greatly–he was, after all, one of her close friends–she wasn't too disappointed when Sunstar announced that Howlingheart would be showing her the ropes.
She could still remember how he had saved her life as a kit, nursing her back to health when she was on death's door, and how he had taught her a few things even when she was young, drying out herbs or picking the leaves from the stems. It had always been a relaxing activity, even if she never thought of herself as a medicine cat at all. Still, she was glad to be here, and her own devotion to helping her best friend through his ailments had spurned on something inside her, something greater than any desire she had ever had to become a warrior.
"What are we going to learn today?" she asked curiously, "you know, Vulturemalice said he could smell herbs from a distance...do you think I'll ever be able to do that? Smell watermint from a meadow away?"
Howlingheart smiled at her; her eagerness was something that he'd always found particularly endearing about her. Even when they first met, and she was nothing more than a scrap of fur radiating heat and looking nearly to be at death's door, she had had that spark in her eyes. It was why he had taken such a strong liking to her, why he found himself nurturing her. She reminded him of his sister; everytime he saw her smile, he felt like Foxpaw was there again with him. Howlingheart would do anything he could for the young she-cat who stood across from him. They might not have been biological family, but blood kinship meant little to him, especially after nearly being slaughtered by a blood kin. Plus, there was a part of him that thought that his bond with his adoptive daughter was even more special than if they were actually father and daughter, explicitly because it wasn't blood that connected them. They chose to be in each others lives. It hadn't been chance the same way as it would have been otherwise.
Blinking the empty philosophizing about family and his attachment to Sunpaw away, the tom took a moment to first place his nose firmly on his forehead. "Congratulations, Sunpaw. I could not think of a more suited candidate to take on this role," he murmured, pride in his voice. He had been gone when she had been promoted, so this was his first chance to tell her that. "You've done well for yourself." He would be proud of you, he added in his head, his mind drifting slowly to Bermondsey. He had promised him that he would take care of her, to make sure she grew to whatever potential she had. Bermondsey would be happy with how things turned out, or at least, Howlingheart would have been if the roles were reversed.
He then pulled away slightly, tipping his head. "All in good time," he meowed with a nod. "Until you can, though, the garden keepers will be your best friends. They know all of the good places to find herbs." It was part of the reason that he'd been selected to help her. Being a garden keeper was not the same as being a medicine cat, clearly, but the role did come with a large amount of time dedicated to tending to the very plants that made up Sunpaw's stores. "Eventually, though, you'll be able to poke your head in here and by scent alone know what you need to gather."
The red tom then glanced into the stores. Before he had left SummerClan and gone into hiding, Vulturemalice had still been medicine cat. He still wasn't entirely sure what had happened. "I suppose where we start depends on what you already know. Are there herbs you've already got a working understanding of?" Rose had warned him that her training had been minimal, but just how minimal? Were they starting on a blank slate? His tail flicked as he awaited her response.

god howling is giving me the affirmation of pride I wanted as a child wtf
Sunpaw was rocking on her paws, giddy with excitement. Her eyes fluttered closed as her papa greeted her with pride, and she could only return a sheepish grin. Her heart always fluttered when he mentioned how proud he was of her; despite Howlingheart raising her with care, she had always found a mixture of feelings at the familial expression of love, a strange bittersweet when she didn't know where her family was, and an even stronger feeling of confusion these days, knowing exactly where one of her siblings was.
She had pushed that thought away most days, but had reminded herself to mention it to Howlingheart...yet now wasn't the right time either. "I won't let you down," she spoke with her bright eyes and flushed cheeks, sitting down next to the tom, trying to keep her tail from twitching in excitement. She already liked the garden keepers so that wasn't going to be a problem at all, even if the funky tortoiseshell tom she had chatted with no longer stayed in the clan...and Sunstar was a leader now. Still, the garden keepers were nice and she liked them, so that wasn't going to be a problem at all.
At the mention of herbs, she let out a nervous giggle. "Well, a little bit," she confessed, "I've heard from the garden keepers before...and Vulturemalice had me help him collect herbs before, like watermint by the lake! It's really fuzzy in the summer I remember...oh, and juniper berries grow in the winter, I think? Someone mentioned that once...and I helped Sunstar get all her pretty flowers once, and she showed me what sunflower seeds taste like, but I don't really know what they do..."
"You couldn't if you tried," he assured her with a nod. She could light this whole place on fire, and Howlingheart would have nodded along and hummed the "go little rockstar" tiktok audio, if he knew what a tiktok or a rockstar was. He then nodded along as she told him what she knew. His whiskers flicked in amusement at the mention of sunflower seeds. He could remember fondly the first time he and his sister had tried them, the breeze wafting over the Southern Ocean as they lazily spent one of their last afternoons together. The world was so perfect that day. "Did you like them?" he asked with a slight purr, his own reminiscence in his eyes.
He then let his gaze flick to the stores. "You're correct about juniper berries. As for sunflower seeds, I will be honest with you as much as I can. There are some plants I am not entirely sure what their use is, but we will find that out together, mm?" He had said the same thing to Rose when she asked him: there were things he would have to find out along the way.
He was about to open his mouth again, before he heard a terrible coughing come from the camp. By this point, most cats knew exactly who the sound was from; the young Coast Guard was not exactly... discrete about the fact he sounded like he was on his last legs about half of the time. His ears perked, before he looked at Sunpaw. "I'd love to talk theory, and we will as soon as we can, but I believe we might have our first patient?"

It hadn't been intentional but there was a low rumble of a purr emanating from her chest at that. When he mentioned the sunflower seeds...well, she wan't quite sure what to think. They didn't taste like much, but she knew Sunstar had an affinity for those, however strange that was. "They were..." her hesitation spoke as much, "interesting. They don't taste like much though...but I heard they were popular for snacking?" She wasn't so sure about why it was such an attractive snack.
She nodded excitedly at the thought of learning about herbs; it was relaxing, to be picking the leaves apart with her dad after all. At the sound of coughing, she already knew exactly who it was. Perhaps Howlingheart didn't know but she was certainly well-acquainted with Foxpaw, they had met during the beginning of the invasion and she'd never admitted it to her dad because it was way too embarrassing if he tried to get to know her friends, but she liked the little guy. He was nice, and just easy to talk to.
It was his illness that had inspired her to get to know the herbs more too, just to see if there were things that they could do to alleviate the injuries and sicknesses of cats who frankly, didn't seem to have a solution. "Let's go meet him," she nodded in agreement as they trotted towards the sound of the choking tom.
"Foxpaw?" she greeted tentatively as they neared, "er...how are you feeling?" She wanted to take initiative but she was still rather nervous being in this position.
Fox's ears perked at the sound of his friend's voice, and the young tom's eyes immediately snapped to her. A sheepish smile crossed his lips; he didn't mean to be so loud that she came running to his rescue (although there was a part of him that felt a little warm and fuzzy that his best friend was so attentive). "Oh, this?" he meowed, turning his head slightly to let out a cough. "It's just another Saturday," he promised her, but his voice was a little more raspy than it normally was. The tom looked exhausted, which wasn't the best. He was supposed to start the transition into the Coast Guard soon, but Rosethorn had made it very clear that her son was not to join a guard patrol until he had a clean bill of health- whatever a clean bill of health looked like for the perpetually ill tom. So, he'd been stuck in camp, trying to avoid making Sunny take time out of her day to deal with the issue. Apparently, that hadn't worked very well.
Another rip of coughs exited his chest, this time large enough that he had to sit so that he wouldn't topple over. Each cough was weaker than the last, and by the end of it, the small thing had to let out a gasp. After, any inclination to lie to her was gone. "Actually, I feel like I was kicked in the gut by a mountain lion," he admitted, his voice breathy. "I've been trying to avoid bothering you about it all day, much to Ma's irritation."
- Howlingheart followed Sunpaw, but made it clear that he was going to hold back until Sunpaw needed his help. He was genuinely curious how she'd handle her first patient, and the best way to see her in action was, well, letting her act.

She had a grin on her face as she entered, the same smiley look she always had reserved for him and their other friends. "Foxpaw–no, Foxfable now, right?" she greeted, trying to keep the blush from her face and from Howlingheart's prying eyes, "congrats on getting coast guard! I heard the news, that's so cool, isn't it? You get to go out to the sea and explore...you have to bring me a pretty shell or two sometime. I heard there are some that change colours in the light! It must be so cool to get to go on adventures...."
Sunpaw had a wistful look on her face, but she knew she'd never make it in the coast guard. Being one included facing one of her greatest fears, the open ocean and murky waters. She hated the idea of swimming and being unable to see what brushed against her paws in the water, after all. Still, had it been any cat with an injury, perhaps Sunpaw wouldn't have a clue what to do but Foxfable was a frequent visitor, even before she became Vulturemalice's apprentice. She had a powerful memory only for things she cared for, and luckily for this tom, she did care for him.
"Maybe some honey might help?" she suggested, flashing a look to her mentor, before turning back to him, "you sound kind of phlegmy...does your chest feel tight too?" She was aware that Foxfable had always had this cough, and the humidity of the sea surely made it worse. She only hoped it was a bout of warm weather that was causing this and not something worse like greencough.
"Yep!" he chirped, a little bit of pride in his voice. Foxfable still wasn't exactly used to his new name, but he carried it with him as a badge of honor. Despite every single cat who had assumed he wouldn't make it to warrior-hood, he did. "Thank you! It's been pretty fun, I'm not going to lie. The ocean is so big and hunting for treasure is, well, super exciting. You find such cool stuff!" The tom hadn't expected to be promoted, but he carried his promotion with the same pride that he carried his new name. "I actually have something for you later. I found it when I was out excavating, and it reminded me of you," he meowed with a slight bashfulness. When he had come across the carnelian, she was the first thing he thought of. "I'll bring it to you later today," he promised. He hadn't expected to see her so soon.
"While I'm adventuring, you're doing even cooler work here," he promised her, noticing the wistfulness in her expression. "Medicine cat apprentice is an even bigger accomplishment than silly old me," he meowed, offering his best friend a flick of his tail. He then turned to the side, offering another rickety cough into the air.
Foxfable glanced at Howlingheart, who nodded encouragingly when Sunpaw brought up the honey. "A little bit," he admitted, looking to the ground. "It's gotten worse the last few days, but you can't tell my mom that, okay?" he meowed, although his words were mostly targetted to Howlingheart. "I... don't think it's greencough, but it's certainly something."
- The other tom nodded along as Foxfable spoke, before quickly moving to the medicine cat's den. When he re-emerged, he carried with him a bundle of two herbs, one soft pink flowers and the other a type of weed, bright-eye and lovage. He placed them in front of Sunpaw gently. "Have you seen either of these before?" he asked his adoptive daughter curiously, glancing at the herb.

Sunpaw gave him a bright smile. It was only a couple of moons ago when he had confided in her about his feelings having moved to a new clan. She had felt a sort of sympathy for him; she had moved here from somewhere else too, and understood all too well what it felt like to be an outsider. Still, he had made a space for himself here, and she was glad. A blush appeared on her face as he talked about a gift for later. "Oh you don't have to bring me anything," she felt so shy all of a sudden, her cheeks turning red, "but thanks, Foxfable." She felt almost giddy, but she wasn't sure whether it was the idea of a gift or whether it was the other tom having thought of her while he was messing about.
She laughed at his words. "I mean, if you count me nearly poisoning everyone," she replied with a snort, all in good humour, only turning to him with another concerned look as he coughed. Gods, she really hoped she could find what was going on with him; she couldn't help but fret over the tom like a mother bird.
"I won't," she promised, before trotting to Howlingheart, who brought a bunch of flowers forward. "No I haven't," she admitted, "what are they?"
