Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Wickedshriek waited beside the cliff face, eyes peeled for any trace of Shallowglow. "C'mon," he muttered, impatient as ever, "this elemental isn't gonna kill itself."
This was her first mission. She'd tried to avoid them as long as she could, mostly because she only half understood the goals, but this time, she'd been directly summoned. Oh well, she thought with a flick of her tail as she padded up. "We agreed to meet at dusk. From my calculation, we have precisely two and a half minutes before dusk really sets," she then countered. "But, I'm ready if you are. What exactly are we doing again?"
Wickedshriek gritted his teeth. "It's not literally--I'm not counting the nanoseconds until--whatever, I don't care anymore," he said, even though he did sort of still care. "We're hunting down an elemental just out of the territory, just in that forest next to the western border. Or elementals, depending on how you look at it--one mind operating two bodies. Southspectre was meant to be coming with us, but he's..." Wickedshriek paused. Would his brother like it if he told Shallowglow the reason he wasn't coming? No, which meant he had to do it. "He's having some intense diarrhea, so he's having to sit out."
She didn't understand why he was so frustrated, but she shrugged anyways. Her eyes widened at his mention of exactly what they were doing. She had spent so much time learning, but not very much time actually applying the skills she had learned. Would this be a massive fail, or the start of a buddy cop saga? Only time would tell.
When he spoke of his brother, her eyes widened slightly. "Oh." She meowed, sounding a little confused as to why she would ever want to know that. "Okay." Was this tom being weird? Shallowglow couldn't tell.
"Where were.... they last seen?" she then asked, following him out of wherever they were.
"They have a hideout in the forest," Wickedshriek said, turning on his heel in the direction of their target. "We got a tip from some loners who were passing through the area. Said that the Twins attacked their group for no reason, killed a queen. It matches other reports we've had of a few she-cats found murdered in the area. That's why I requested another tom for this assignment, not someone who fit the Twins' victim profile, but..." Wickedshriek bit back a growl "It is what it is."
A normal cat probably would have winced at the assertation that she fit the victim profile, but Shallowglow was not a normal cat. Instead, she tilted her head slightly, pensively considering all of the things that he said. "If I fit the victim profile, it means they were all around three years old. Were there any other similarities between them but age? One was a queen. If the others weren't, that could suggest that the ... Twins are becoming more specific. Maybe the girls are a stand in for a true target?"
“One of the three other victims was likely a queen,” Wickedshriek replied, “but we only know that because there was a dead kit lying next to them. The others could’ve been queens too, or it could just be coincidence.” They continued walking as they talked, eventually crossing over the western border. “If you want to know my totally unsubstantiated opinion, then I’m thinking its another garden-variety shadow elemental with a freaky element and some kind of freaky trauma involving their freaky mother. That’s usually how these things are, you know? Keep in mind, we only know about the two-minds-one-body thing from the loners, so who knows? They could’ve been wrong about the whole thing. Or setting us up. Untrustworthy bunch,” he muttered bitterly.
"Freaky trauma involving their freaky mother, got it," Shallowglow noted in the file she had started in her mind about the case. The addition of the dead kit was interesting. Was it just convinience, or was there more to it? She supposed they would have to find out sooner or later.
"I'm sure they aren't trying to deliberately get us killed, right?" she meowed, her head dipped to the side slightly as they walked along. Shallowglow's personality was completely undeveloped, so ian was sturggling with it. "Most loners are completely harmless. Only point three percent of them end up having malicious intentions. Most just want to keep to themselves." Shallowglow had always wondered what that would look like, being on your lonesome, but alas, she was stuck in the rootin' tootin' elemental branch of the C-FBI.
They reached the latest crime scene after a few minutes of talking shop, and the dilute calico let out a sigh as she saw the blood. The crime scene was horrifically in tact, which meant that blood and bile was everywhere. It was enough to make a normal cat gag, but she just blinked twice as she took it in. The poor corpse's gaze was so absent, she almost felt badly. She tore her gaze off of it to go back to Wickedshriek. "Multiple depths of these wounds suggest that the loners were right, there are at least two unsubs. For being controlled by one mind they are ... rather disorganized," she then admitted. An attack like this took little planning. "And devolving fast. We'd better find them quick."
Wickedshriek's frown got deeper and deeper with every word Shallowglow spoke. "Yeah sure probably," he murmured. This girl is going to give me a headache.
He eyed the forest in the direction of their target's supposed hideout. There were a few splatters of blood on the forest floor, forming a vague trail off into the distance. He nudged Shallowglow on the shoulder. "Guess we don't need a tracking rune," he said, gesturing to the blood trail with a tilt of his head.
She glanced at the blood with a raised eyebrow. "That makes this easier," she agreed, before taking a few hesitant steps in the direction. "Should we have a plan before we go in there? I can take the one on the right if you take one on the left deal?" she whispered over her shoulder. The blood led to a clearing. From within it, she could hear voices, but it didn't make sense. It was as if only parts of the conversation needed to be spoken out loud, but she supposed that that should be expected for the situation. Her hackles rose slightly. What on earth was going to lay on the other side of the clearing?
Wickedshriek nodded. "Probably not a good idea to 'vibe' this one. You take right, I'll take left, like you said. And be prepared for whatever freaky crap the target pulls."
