Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Juniperdust had felt rather keenly that someone was watching her for weeks now, ever since the night her claws had found purchase in her sister's throat.
There was no regret in her mind for that night. She had only done what was necessary- her sister had learned the truth about her, and that truth threatened her position in Summerclan. It threatened her status, her image, her entire false reputation. Her sister had become a threat, and Juniperdust had eliminated her as easily as slaughtering a piece of freshkill.
Still, she felt like someone's eyes were on her all the time, and it was starting to unnerve her. And then Sunstar had asked to accompany her on her evening patrol. Juniperdust agreed readily, setting off for the eastern border. After a moment of silence, she cleared her throat.
"I want to apologize for running away that night," she began, her voice soft and solemn. "I shouldn't have abandoned you to Stormstar. It's no excuse but... I was worried about my sister. And my worries turned out to be right." Her voice hitched and broke, and she turned away, lifting and raising her shoulders in a deep exhale. Her mother's wails that night had been real, but Juniper's had been hollow, as fake as the rest of her constructed persona. Still, she'd mimicked real shock and grief exceedingly well, and most cats in Summerclan still felt bad for the warrior who was processing her sister's loss.
Most of that night was bottled up inside her, because if she thought back on it she still found herself choking up seawater, but certain things about it still haunted her thoughts. The way Juniperdust- a skilled warrior- hadn't left a mark on Stormstar in that time she had him cornered in camp. The words the regent muttered just loud enough for her to hear. The scent of the gray she-cat on her sister's corpse, despite Juniperdust being nowhere near.
Sunstar was gullible, but she wasn't blind.
As she chewed her fresh-kill, she started to watch the warrior more and began to notice the disparities between her words and actions. She noticed the subtler nuances now, the apathy that consumed her expression when she felt no one was watching. Though she could tell now, by Juniperdust starting to check behind her before she left camp, that the window through which she could continue observing was about to slam shut. That's when her approach changed gears and, discarding the bones of her meal, she invited the warrior to patrol with her.
Disillusioned with honesty enough as it was, Sunstar doubted the sincerity of Juniperdust's confession- but she offered a melancholy smile, brushing her goldem tail-tip against the she-cat's shoulder. "She was a wonderful cat and great garden keeper. I'm sorry for your family's loss." There was an almost emphasis on your family, as if to exclude Juniperdust from that, but surely the dimwitted leader didn't really mean anything by it... right? "I thought both of my brothers would die that night and i-it was the worst feeling. I can't imagine what you're going through." Genuine emotion caught in her throat, remembering how close both Weevilspike and Vulturemalice came to death, and she had to fall back into silence for a while.
Cutting a path that looped around the Witch's House, they headed towards the Rabbit Meadow and that's when Sunstar found her voice again, notes of dry humor in it, "Don't worry about the thing with Stormstar. I'm sure it was better that way, in case things turned out differently."
