Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Having been brought to Nightclan at such a young age, one would think that Oleanderkit would have adjusted easily, but something had never felt right. There was no real connection to the cats around her; she felt more like a temporary guest, taking up a bed and having dinner with them until, eventually, she would pack up and leave. But her knowledge was so minimal that she didn't know where she would go, and then she would be all alone and then die, somehow. Probably of the loneliness. Though, despite how the other grown-ups overlooked her and she wasn't very friendly with the nursery kits, there was one cat in peculiar that she needed to talk too. Oleanderkit didn't approach him right away. Actually, it had taken her quite a while — she wanted to be prepared, so she hung far behind him, enough to be unnoticeable but still overhear his conversations, learned his name and everything she could about who he was, what his life here was, so she could mimic it. Moonblight had saved her life, her siblings' lives, and now she wanted him to teach her how to live it properly.
It took a while to muster up the confidence — something strange for her, because Oleanderkit wasn't the type to usually shy away — but, a little later in the night, she prowled the camp, peering into dens and entrances, around camp, until she came across a face she had become so familiar with. When he was finally spotted, she rushed up, a little too quick because she had to stumble to a halt before she ran right into his legs. Her eyes were wide, bright, as she looked up at him, uncaring of whatever he had been doing previously because, obviously, she was much more important.
"Moonblight!" She chirped, and while her voice was cheerful she couldn't help but feel a little bashful at finally saying something to him. Maybe she came off a little strong. "Moonblight," she said again, "what are you doin'? Can I do it too?" She'd spent all morning grooming her fur to keep it from the naturally messy state it was, but as she bounced around him it seemed her efforts would be wasted, but faced with her saviour, she could bring herself to care.
And then she stopped again, looked up to meet his eyes with her own earnest ones, "Oh! And you saved us; you saved me! I wanted to thank you!"

Moonblight hadn't thought much of it. His duty as a loyal guard meant that he had been in the right place at the right moment really, and it wasn't like he could've left them where they were for the foxes to eat. He too had been in their place, though never in quite as much danger, but in a way...he felt strangely about all of this, especially now. His 'father' had left him behind all the same, in a clan he didn't know at all, and for most of his life, he had wondered where his sister was, wondered where everyone was, wondered why he had left him here in the first place...only to find his sister in another clan, looking terrified of him as he had pinned her down, almost ready to kill her.
A shudder ran down his spine. He couldn't wipe that expression of her face off his mind. For a moment, he had nearly feared himself and what he could do, and after seeing the dead cat with her kits in tow, it had sparked an anger inside of him, a rage in his chest at how his father had left him with nothing but his skin and the whispers of a family curse and the knowledge of a sister lost to him, and went quietly into the night. At least their mother fought for them, he thought bitterly, before immediately feeling guilty for that. His own family was alive and here he was, jealous of a bunch of kits who's mother died for them. It was ridiculous, he scolded himself, to be so self-pitying.
Still, he had avoided them after bringing them to the camp and finding them a temporary mother; it took a village to raise a kit after all, and he was certain NightClan, despite their tendencies to disavow the weak, would be a home to these small things. He had found himself trudging back to camp after a patrol when the white kit came bouncing over with a cheerful grin, his eyes widening as he took a step back in surprise. Right. What was her name again? He knew Aspenstar gave them a name...Daisykit? Lilykit? He forgot what it was but he was sure it was a flower of some sort.
"Right," he replied awkwardly, a shy titter leaving his mouth, "uh...you're welcome?" That sounded more like a question than a reply. He cleared his throat, giving the kit a smile that looked almost like a grimace. He didn't know how to handle kits at all, but he didn't have to sound like some deer in the headlights. "Yeah, I mean I wouldn't have left you out guys out there, but I'm glad you guys are safe. How are you finding NightClan?"
She didn’t want to notice the awkward way he responded, the grimace, like he didn’t actually want her around at all, so she simply smiled brightly again, nodding along. Oleanderkit would ignore it. Moonblight was a strange one, in the fact that he was almost scared of the kit before him — it even hurt a little, because in her mind, somehow she had done something wrong.
How are you finding NightClan? She considered the question for a moment, finally settling down just beside him, giving a small, exaggerated hum of thought. “I don’t know,” she responded, slumping in on herself, “It’s weird. Like … what am I supposed to do?” Her question was one that stemmed from innocence, and she looked at Moonblight with large, hopeful eyes, because she assumed he knew everything. “Do I have to go out on those patrols like you do?” She said the word like it was unfamiliar and not something she’s heard about from passing conversation. And then she went silent again, picking through the million different questions in her mind until she settled on a simple,
“How do you find NightClan?” Maybe if she gaged how he felt, she would feel the same way too. Idly, as she waited for an answer and as he spoke, she had wandered towards his tail, swatting and batting at it like it was an annoying insect. Her motions weren’t overly excited — though it wouldn’t be her fault, really, if her claws caught his fur when she tried to pin it down. She continued to speak, “I think it’s strange. And I think the other nursery kits are annoying., except maybe that Badgerkit,” assuming Moonblight knew who she was talking about. She spoke of her small, simple woes of kit-life like they were old friends, like he even knew her name, like she had come home from a long day of school and sat down at the dinner table. She was good at playing pretend, at tricking herself into believing things like being lived. So good, in fact, that when she made the conscious decision to ignore his hesitance, by this point she had almost forgotten it entirely.

Moonblight could empathize a lot with her, despite his avoidance of this whole situation as a whole. When he had joined, he had no idea what he wanted to do. He had no idea what was going on in general, but he had a couple of friends that had helped him out, and well...as terrible as Sagebristle had been as a tour guide back in the day, he was glad they had met back then, at least. The tom wanted to put on that strict face, the one who would preach to Oleanderkit the importance of patrols, but despite his ability to change like a chameleon around those that mattered, he didn't seem to have it in him to chide this one.
"You know, you might like it out there," he replied with a small smile, "you can see the territory and the big old world out there, you know? It's kind of nice being on patrol sometimes, and to be honest, all I really do is chat with the other warriors with me, so it's kind of like hanging out with your friends."
The other question made him stop. How did he feel about the clan? To be honest, he had no idea. In fact, he rarely had any idea of how he felt towards anything. His tail flicked from one side to the other as he was unaware of Oleander's new mission to utterly demolish the fluffy plume of his. "It's where I grew up," he offered, a non-answer, "so it's home, you know?"
Moonblight still had no idea how to deal with kits, but he had to admit, her energy was infectious. Was he like this as a kit too? "Who's Badgerkit?" he asked, chuckling as he finally noticed Oleanderkit still attacking his tail. His tail sweeped underneath her paws playfully.
She landed two perfectly placed paws on his tail, pinning it to the ground and deciding to lay atop it, unaware of how she tugged or pulled it, only proud that she had caught it. "Really?" She purred, enamored with the idea, and just as quick as she had pinned his tail down, she got to her feet, scrambling to stand beside him again. She wanted to see the world.
It's where I grew up, she nodded in agreement, like she had any clue of what he was talking about. "I guess that makes sense." She shrugged, though she wasn't sure how to feel like that too. She would have to ask another day.
"Badgerkit? Oh, he's a little nerd. Sits in the corner and tries to make, what he calls, food," she spoke the words in a deadpan, mocking way, put emphasis on the word food because it was actually mostly mud and random plants he'd stolen or found around. "I wouldn't call them friends. I want to be as popular as you." Then she looked towards the exit, thinking over Moonblight's words for a moment, and suddenly she was moving towards it, not sparing even a glance at him, though she expected the tom to follow.
"I want to go out. Take me out," not a question; it was a demand — she wouldn't take no for an answer. And before he even could, she looked around inconspicuously, stood stock still until suddenly she was running out, giggling mischievously like she'd gotten away with something great instead of simply stepping foot outside.
Before she had left and without looking, she yelled over her shoulder, "come catch meeee!"

Moonblight nodded. He always liked taking his walks around the territory after all; there was plenty to see and he always found it rather relaxing to be alone. As much as it came naturally to him, to put on a happy face for everyone around him, there was a part of him that found it difficult to keep on top of it all the time. Deep down inside, being alone was kind of nice. It meant that he didn't have to pretend to be anything other than his dull old self. "I wasn't born in NightClan either," he offered, hoping to reassure the kit, "but it becomes home you know?"
He raised a brow at how Oleanderkit said 'food' because what in the world did she mean by that anyway? Wasn't food just a mouse here or there? Moonblight had never eaten anything made out of....whatever was found in the nursery. He made a face at that. Eugh, that did not sound appetizing at all. When she spoke of how popular he was, he looked taken aback. Popular? What did she even mean? I think you have the wrong cat," he laughed awkwardly, "I don't think I'm popular at all." After all, the one cat who he was best friends with was the grumpiest one in the clan really, how could he be popular?
Still, as the kit demanded his time and marched out, Moonblight could only follow, as if this was nothing new. "Where do you want to go?" he asked with a smile, before realizing she was racing to the forest. Right. He immediately ran after her, hoping he wouldn't lose her somewhere. He was still wary that a fox might be out there somewhere, hungry for these kits after slaying their mother.
If she could write everything down in a little notebook, she would be doing that, but instead she was keeping it all in a pocket in her head, filing it for later when she'd need it. It becomes home eventually. She nodded, not really understanding the how but knowing she'd feel that way eventually. It was reassuring to know he was more similar to her than she thought. It made her look up to him even more.
I don't think I'm popular at all. She tilted her head, confused, "you have friends?" She questioned, because anyone who had friends was obviously popular and adored. Even if it was usually the same cat, it was still something. Oleanderkit didn't have any at all. She only shrugged again, gave a small, quick hum; it didn't really matter, her opinion of him wouldn't change, she could move on quickly from anything.
She didn't answer his question, just raced until the darkness made way for moonlight and the air became clear, stopped running but continued to move in place as she bounced on her paws. She didn't know where she wanted to go, there seemed to be so much. She wanted to see every inch of it, really, get a feel of home. He would have caught her by now, but she didn't seem to mind. She hummed again in thought.
"I want to gooo," she looked around again, "where did you find us?" She turned suddenly, but there was an excited grin on her face. "I want to go there first." She declared, like it wasn't the place she was orphaned. It felt more like a school trip; her ways of coping were strange.

He shrugged. "Yeah, like maybe two friends," he admitted with a chuckle, "not really what I'd call popular if you ask me." Still, it was flattering, for her to admire him like this, even if he felt as if there really was nothing for her to admire. In a strange way, he didn't know how to feel about these kits. He had found them but he wanted nothing to do with them...except right now, he could feel some strange feeling of protectiveness over them too, as if they were his own siblings or his own...
Nah, he didn't want kits, not yet, not now. Still, as they dashed off into the woods, and as he tried to make sure she didn't get too far or worse, fall into a ditch or get hurt or something else, he found himself finally settling into a pace by the kit. He knew he shouldn't be doing this; kits were supposed to be in camp. Yet, it was almost fun to be out here with a cat who had never seen the sights before.
Well, that was until she spoke. "I don't think that's a good place to go," he replied uneasily. They had buried most of the other cat's remains, but it hadn't rained since; who knew whether the blood still stained the grass and earth of that section of territory? He wouldn't have wanted to see any of his family dead at a young age; why would this one want to see something so gruesome?
"It's not safe over there," he lied, knowing very well they had chased the fox out of their territory days after, "let's go somewhere else. Have you ever seen the cenote?"
She wanted to whine, throw a fit or something until he gave in and decided to take her, but she didn't — surprisingly, she gave him nothing but an adorably scathing look and moved on. Morbid curiosity was a strange thing, because it wasn't that she was excited to visit the place her mother had died, despite how she may sound, it was more to help the fact settle in. To prove it was real, even if she had no memories of her to go off of. Perhaps that was why she felt so strange. Unused to grieving, she simply put the feelings aside and tied it in a pretty, distracting ribbon, like it was a present for later. Disorganized attachment or something like that, probably not too good on her young, impressionable brain. She turned her attention back to Moonblight as he mentioned this cenote, looking around them wildly like it would suddenly appear in front of her.
"What's that?" It seemed her tone had completely shifted, and now she was staring up at him in excitement, completely forgetting where she had wanted to go previously. "I wanna see it!"

He was glad she didn't argue like most kits would, and letting out a sigh of relief, he gave her a nod and a smile. "It's like...it's like this big deep hole in the ground, you know? I know there's a lot of legends about it, do you want to hear some?" They weren't so much legends as what others had speculated, when they had all been trainees and kits wondering why the large sinkhole existed in their territory.
He didn't exactly wait for a response. "Someone once told me it's like....the eye of the earth, you know? Like maybe the creatures underground use it to see the sky...but others also say that maybe it's where the fallen star landed, and that it created such a deep tunnel that it drilled a hole into the center of the world, and that monsters you can't even believe live in the bottom of the pit."
A quiet chuckle left his mouth. "I don't know if any of those are true but no one's ever gotten to the bottom of it, it's so dark in there that I wouldn't be surprised if there really were monsters inside, but it's kind of beautiful that way, you know? Not knowing?"
It didn't look like she was listening with how she felt the need to touch everything around her — sniff the plants, try to chip wood off of trunks, bat at the undergrowth — but she was, very closely in fact. The cenote sounded interesting and she wanted to see it now. Oleanderkit wondered how many cats it would take to dig such a big hole. At the mention of legends, she lifted her head, leaving her curiosity for the environment behind her as she settled at a pace beside Moonblight, giving his stories her full attention.
"A star?" She squeaked. Looking up, past the few clouds that drifted across the sky, she tilted her head at the little white specks that splattered across the darkness. They looked so little, how could one make a hole so big that monsters lived inside of it? She giggled, "I think I would befriend all the monsters," perhaps it was a stretch, considering how she couldn't seem to befriend even her own denmates, but maybe monsters were different.
— but it's kind of beautiful that way, you know? Not knowing? She wrinkled her nose, "no, I want to know everything. Then nobody can say I'm not smart or cool, because I'll know I am, because I know everything. And if someone asks a question, then I'll have the answer, because I know everything." Sometimes she did think she knew everything, that she couldn't be wrong, and often she fought over the fact that others disagreed with her, sulked about it for a while before realizing that maybe she had been wrong at the time. But she never said anything about it, because admitting she was wrong was the worst feeling ever and she didn't want to feel that, so she let it sit, still fought over her rightness to an almost unbearable degree. Though, Moonblight seemed to know everything, like what a cenote was, and how to be a Nightclan cat.

"A star," he nodded, before peering down into the darkness once more, "I guess maybe they're a lot bigger up close...but I don't know, it's just a legend, but maybe a cat from StarClan came with it? Who knows, I wish I could've seen it though. It would've been cool to see a falling star up close..." He wasn't so sure about the monsters, but anything was possible, and the darkness always seemed to engulf every bit of light that fell into it, after all. He didn't exactly believe in all of this but...he didn't exactly doubt it either.
Moonblight chuckled. Knowing everything, huh? "Well one day when you learn everything, you better come back and teach me," he replied with a smile.
She squinted up at the stars, the things that appeared so lifeless yet somehow held cats within their lights. It was all so strange to her, and so she voiced it, "I don't get this whole Starclan thing. I thought when you died you were gone. 'Cuz I think they should visit, then, right?" She shrugged, moved ahead until, rather suddenly, her eyes fixated on a tiny light just in front of her, fluttering and flickering in the darkness. Well one day when you learn everything, you better come back and teach me. She nodded, felt a little prideful of the fact that Moonblight wanted to learn from her, even when it seemed he knew everything already.
"A star!" She gasped, ran towards it, but before she could reach it, it darted away. Oleanderkit looked around again, catching sight of a few more of these little creatures, the starlit light of the fireflies in the gaps between trees, flickering around like they themselves had just rested in the sky. She attempted to swat at one close by, but it evaded her paw.

Moonblight shrugged. "To be honest, I don't really believe in them either," he admitted, "my uh...sister thinks it's because cats don't know what else to fill that space in their lives with, but I don't know. My papa always thought there must be something out there, maybe fate really has a face to it," he chuckled, looking into the distance for a moment, before shrugging, the lopsided grin appearing on his face, "–but he also believed our whole family was cursed or something silly like that, so I wouldn't put that much faith in his words either."
Oleanderkit's interruption made him look up, and his lips twitched into a grin. Oh, he always did love fireflies. They were just so magical; the first time he had seen one, he had asked his papa about them. The tom had told him it was magic. Fairies, his sister had screeched in delight. Even now, knowing that they weren't magic at all, he still found them fascinating.
"They're fireflies," he piped up, "they don't usually come out here often..."
She had rather foolishly scared that she'd have to lie that she really believed in their silly star cats. Perhaps she was young, naïve, unwilling to open her eyes to the idea that perhaps there was something beyond. But she couldn't wrap her head around it.
"I didn't know you had a sister. Can I meet her? Can she be my sister too? Because I don't like mine very much," she made a dissatisfied face, turning to admire the fireflies. She found the creatures so beautiful that their evades to her attempts to capture them didn't bother her like they would have, and instead she stopped to sit back and watch the few that fluttered around.
She watched a particular one as he flew higher, turned her head towards the dark sky to watch it as it almost blended in with the stars, "I think they just like me." Her tail contently swayed behind her, the furs draping and soft, brushing the grass under it, which disturbed a few more fireflies that seemed to have taken rest there. She turned, leaned down to watch one fly away, and though she was close it didn't seem startled like the others had been. They weren't very pretty up close. For a little bit, she didn't move, stayed a bright white, motionless lump on the ground, head resting on her paws, before she got up. She moved to brush the remaining debris off her pelt with a rather disgusted look.

Moonblight had yet to really come to terms with the matter of his sister, and Oleanderkit's mention of her suddenly made his chest ache. There were times he almost wished he could just disagree with a sibling and be done with it all, but here he was, estranged from one and with an elephant in the room. They were in clans on opposite sides of the war really; how could he ever face her again? He still didn't know.
"She's not from NightClan, we were...separated when we were little," he spoke quietly, much less smiley and sunny as he was before, his own gaze turned to the fireflies, looking rather distracted now, "she's...to be honest, I don't really know if she wants to talk to me these days but...you know I guess when I was younger I didn't really care much but now...sometimes I wish I spent more time with her, you know?"
He didn't know why he was talking to her about this, or why he decided to open up to a kit he barely knew. Rarely did anyone get an honesty like this from Moonblight and yet...
Her announcement made him look up, and he gave her soft smile. "Do you want to head back?" he suggested, "I can carry you this time."
