Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
A light tabby tom's paws could hardly stay still as he waited outside the nursery for his mentor. Fatepaw knew that he could be standing out here all day with a litter of kits running amuck, or end up playing with them. But there had to be some time for actually prep. Hopefully he could get some of that precious one on one time on the first day. His patient blue eyes narrowed as he tried to peer into the depths of the nursery, but its warm darkness was impossible to see through.
Valleyrose eventually emerged from the nursery, limping slightly and looking extremely exhausted. Her little ones had found their legs and were proving to be a big handful, even more so than some of the older kits in the nursery. At the present, however, the queen had somehow managed to get all four of them to sleep and managed to sneak away unnoticed.
"Shhh," She breathed in a purr, tapping her apprentice on the shoulder and leading him away from the nursery in silence, only speaking again when they where in the exit tunnel, "I swear, those kits of mine have super hearing! I had to use my element to sneak away, a little bit of moss on the bottom of my paws make them a lot harder to hear.... But enough about my day! How has yours been?"
Valleyrose's exhausted emergence already had Fatepaw weary of the day. Perhaps he shouldn't have selected such a young mother... but, no. She could help him, and maybe he could help her. He smiled and followed quietly beside his mentor. "Umm, yeah, I've been okay. I guess I don't have a litter of kits to deal with, so... I've slept and... yeah." He sighed.
"Anyway... I don't know how to phrase this, but I can help your kits get to sleep faster. If you want me too, I understand if you don't." He shuffled his paws. "I, err, have an element like you. Well, not like yours yours, but I have one. I don't know what to do with it. I just... thought you could give me some pointers. And maybe I could help your kits sleep later."
Valleyrose stumbled for a moment before continuing their walk and a slightly slower pace. Fatepaw had an element!? Littlestar's bloodline wasn't known for containing elementals, in fact, it was just one of the many reasons she was happy her children were fathered by Perfectstorm. Elements could be dangerous and life-changing, it wasn't something she'd wish her children to have just because it would make their lives harder. But! Elements could randomly occur, too, and she could only hope that was the case for her apprentice.
"Kits need all of that energy to learn. It may be exhausting for the adults who look after them, but they'd never properly grow up if they were sleeping all the time! Thank you for the offer, though, Fatepaw, I really appreciate it," Valleyrose began with a friendly, cheery tone, it was forced but not in a way that Fatepaw would notice, "If you don't mind, could you tell me more about your element and how it works?"
The stumble didn't escape him. He had done his best to keep it quiet, but he did not expect a physical reaction as extreme as a stumble when he told her. For all he could tell, her reaction was just surprise. Whether or not he could have discerned anything else was blocked by his own desire to have answers and help from her. He smiled meekly. "Well, uhh... I can kind of make things sleep. Well, not just sleep. I can make them tired, really tired." He paused. "And... kind of unresponsive, sometimes. It can take awhile." He mind flashed back to the first snake he killed. He used his element for the first time there, and it was almost purely a reflex.
The shock had come and gone and Valleyrose was now back to her usual composure; that being said, she was still quite nervous. Whatever Fatepaw's element was, it sounded dangerous, perhaps even powerful enough to kill. Valleyrose considered herself a strong elemental in her own right, but she was doubtful that she'd stand any chance against Fatepaw if his power really worked how he had described.
"Yeah, it does. It works on pretty much anything... anything I've tried before." He looked to trees around them and found a bird in one of the farther ones. He raised his tail to signal her to stop moving, and then he focused. His element strained him no more than any other concentration strained him, but once he focused he felt the bird's energy begin to seep in. Any of his brain's sluggishness disappeared in an instant as if he got a shot of caffeine. The bird, however, felt itself slip. It could feel something was wrong, but not what. As it took off its energy waned, and it just fluttered to the ground. Fatepaw kept focusing, and soon enough it has settled into a sleeping position. Fatepaw released his element's hold and just walked up to prey and killed it. He looked back to his mentor.
"That's kind of scary!" Valleyrose mewed light-heartedly, a smile on her face as she padded over to Fatepaw to inspect his kill. By all accounts it looked like a normal piece of fresh-kill, but the way it came to be at their paws almost... felt like cheating? She pawed at it that sat down, wrapping her fluffy torbie tail around her paws, "I'm impressed by how well you've mastered your element. By your age, all I could do was grow a flower or two, but now I can do much more. That being said, I do need you to make a couple of promises to me. The first one is that you will never, ever, use that power of yours against another cat unless it's a life-or-death situation. You offering to use it on my kits was nice, but what if you went just a little too far... and they never woke up. I'm not saying you would do that! But this is an element that we don't fully understand and it's not worth the risk. Do you agree with me so far, Fatepaw?"
It didn't go as poorly as the tom expected. He thought that Valleyrose would be a lot more apprehensive to all of this, but he now knew that he chose the right mentor. A small smiled crept onto his face as she spoke again, even as she said that he needed to make a couple of promises. Or as he knew they would be, rules. "I do, but I feel like I understand the element. When I first tried it, it just came to me. I just knew I could do it. I know I can control it." To him, it felt like an extension of his body, a dangerous one at that. "I think you can trust me more than you think there."
