Roseshade tossed the moss ball she had made to Halfkit, while Mistykit laid quietly in her nest. She was having a bad spell, and Roseshade had confined her to her nest that she had made in her own den to keep a close eye on her. Her chest sounded rattly, and a small fever kept her feeling sluggish and weak. Yet she had none of the other signs of white-cough and her disease didn't seem to be spreading. Roseshade was worried about the young kit, but having her sister her playing would hopefully keep her in good spirits "Try to put more strength into you back legs when you leap, and you will get higher" Cleaverpao
Garsparkling backed into the den, dragging behind him a massive rabbit that was larger than his kittens. He hauled it over to Mistykit and laid it before her, tearing away a soft strip and placing it just in front of her muzzle. "Here, eat," he crooned, his voice raspy with worry. "Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?" Maybe he should have gotten her some wet moss first? He had hunted the rabbit himself, warm and fresh, but the long haul back through the snow had cooled it down.
The yellowed tom stared at her nervously, his gaze flicking up to Roseshade and then to Halfkit, as if he had forgotten they would be here. "Are you hungry too?"

Mistykit coughed, lifting her head up meekly at her father’s voice “Daddy” she purred, though the sound was quiet and soft. She had always been sickly, but this most recent spell had been the worst. She shook her head “no I just want to sleep. Will you cuddle with me?” The best that had been made for her was piled high with furs, but she still shivered from the fever
Roseshad nodded in approval at the rabbit, the kit needed to eat. She walked over to their father’s side “See if you can get her to eat something. Even a bite or two is better than nothing” her voice a quiet whisper that only he would be able to hear
"Righto," Garsparkling breathed. He would get her to eat, even if it took him all day, even if he had to shove the prey down her throat. These little scraps of fur were all he had left of Brindlemist, and he couldn't lose them, he wouldn't. The first few days after her death, he had been empty and aimless, and these kits were his world. In some ways, nothing had changed.
"'Course I'll cuddle with ya, kiddo," he assured. Circling around, he plopped down in the nest beside his daughter and tucked her in against his chest, resting his chin lightly on the top of her head. "You'll sleep better if your belly is full. Will you take a few bites for me?"

Mistykit coughed, cuddling in close to her dad and closing her eyes. She shivered against him "I'm not hungry" she murmured softly "Can you tell me a story? The one about mamma?" She loved hearing the story about how her parents had met, and their whirlwind of a romance. Though when they got to the end where she passed, she always made her dad skip over that part. She didn't like thinking about death, it made her sad.
For once, the attention was on her and as normal when that happened, Halfkit was struggling. A permanent blush was in her face and she overthought everything she did. She was trying, trying to live up to all the expectations that came with her family’s ties. A nord. and an adjustment later, Halfkit found herself sprawled on the ground instead of successfully. She’d missed the landing. But luck was on her side, or something was, as their father returned and focus was restored to Mistykit before anyone could note Halfkit’s failure. She slippe diver towards the nest at the prospect of a story, especially one about momma.

Roseshade settled into the nest, nosing Halfkit gently in beside of her sister while allowing their father to have the nest while she laid beside it. She had been trying most of the morning to get her to eat, and she could only hope that their father would have more luck than she was having. She laid her head lightly on the edge of the nest, mostly watching the kits instead of listening to their father Cleaver

Halfkit’s eyes darted form her aunt to her father, wondering if they would start arguing again. It seemed like they were always arguing over something and more often than not about the two kits huddled in the nest. Snuggling close to her sister, she couldn’t help that her gaze drifted from aunt to sister to father, waiting for something to happen.
Garsparkling glanced up at Roseshade again, reticent, but with the whole family curled into the one nest, he had no room to object.
"I'll tell you the story if you take a bite, okay? You should eat some too, Halfkit," he encouraged, giving her a quick lick on the head. He didn't wait for the kits to eat before he launched into the story, just hoping that the distraction would encourage Mistykit to get started.
"Well, one day, a patrol was sent to check the border. There were two cats on the patrol. One of them was incredibly hot, the prettiest cat in all the clans, wanted by everyone, tall and strong as a badger, the queen of love and beauty, and stubborn as permafrost. The other one was mean and ugly and snide and that one was me." Garsparkling always started the story this way, though he embellished their mother more every time, his voice quiet and warm with admiration for his former mate.
Halfkit’s nose crinkled as she heard the start of the story. Like all kits, she thought her dad was awesome and pretty, but he said otherwise….so she butted in and said her piece as all kits do. “But dad, you can’t be the mean ugly one. Your super nice and pretty!” He always watched after them and made them eat bites first. Though, he was mean when he wouldn’t let them go play without finishing dinner first. Or after bath time which happened just before bedtime.
