will i ever stop using book/movie titles for significant threads? tune in next week to find out!pao
A warrior crested the rises ahead of her, scouting out for animate danger and marking safe paths with his footprints in the snow, until the young leader could rest safely at the WinterClan border. The trip had been grueling and left her thoroughly winded, but she knew that was just the easy part; now, she would be faced with her first trial as SummerClan’s new leader, without the support of her clan, and she intrinsically understood this encounter would set the tone for the nature of her rule, even if her wide eyes were still bright with youth and her paws quivered from either fear or cold- it was hard to say.
They stilled when a figure cut across the horizon. She'd seen Wintrystar before- only at Gatherings, where the speckled tones of her fur were washed out by solid silver light- but right here, surrounded by dreary snowdrifts and gray-faced cliffsides, she looked like she was torn out of the snow by the snarling wind and shaped into feline form. Heart quickening in her chest, her breath white in the air, and panic beginning to seep into her chest, all Sunstar could do was adjust herself into a more dignified posture than crouching afforded her to at least appear composed. "W-wintrystar, you came." Sensing her surprise, she attempted to disguise it and her stutter by dipping her head respectfully.
Most of her apprehension was learned. As already established, the gold-masked SummerClan she-cat was still wet behind the ears and, therefore, hadn't had much opportunity to form her own opinions. Her father, Ratstar, had been openly appalled by Wintrystar's transgressions, and his clan and daughter all leaned into his disgust, marking WinterClan as nothing more than child abusers. Perhaps this meeting would sway that predisposition. Even if it didn't, Sunstar was committed to this plan of hers, one her most trusted advisers had begged her to reconsider. "I'll keep this short," she mewed hastily- political tact would be learned later, "I want to establish an alliance between our clans. In exchange, I'm willing to offer myself in marriage to one of your sons. Oh," realizing she'd breezed past pleasantries and Wintrystar likely had no earthly idea who the hell she even was, she corrected, "I'm Sunstar, SummerClan’s leader."
Cleaver I’ve invited Deathreign as his mothers escort to this meeting!
Wintrystar had been surprised to receive a message from the new SummerClan leader requesting a meeting. Originally she was unsure if accepting, but her curiosity and manners dictated that she attend. Stepping to the border with her son and knight, Deathreign, the she cat did not take a seat or imply in anyway that she would remain if her attention was not caught in the first few moments. She had attended the meeting and given a chance, that’s all she had to do in her mind set. Anything else, was a grace bestowed upon Sunstar. Wintrystar recognized the cat before her, but did not say anything, merely raised an eyebrow and took a seat, showing her commitment to this conversation at last. “Continue.”
Deathreign spent most of the walk paces ahead of his mother; he had no desire to talk with her now, and he leaned into the excuse of keeping an eye out for trouble. This frozen world was harsh and unforgiving, and it could be hiding any number of unpleasant surprises, yet by the time they neared the border, there wasn't one bit of trouble to be found.
The Knight dropped back, then, to heel at his leader's side. The Knight knew his place: look tough, keep silent, and be watchful, always. It wasn't a difficult task; graced with his father's height and thick, dark fur, he overshadowed the small foreign leader. His sister had drilled in him many times that he needed to be the perfect guard and now was his first real test. Deathreign was nervous, but The Knight was stoic and politely uninterested in the clan's affairs.
His ears tuned to their surroundings, he broke his composure only once - In exchange, I'm willing to offer myself in marriage to one of your sons - earned a surprised cough from the tom, and his fur ruffled uncomfortably. Deathreign had a brother and if Borealis felt merciful, Sunstar would claim him and take him far from their icy lands... but if he was feeling, Deathreign feared he was the one being sold today.
Wintrystar sat at last and Sunstar could relax, the tension visibly melting from her shoulders. The hard part was all but over. All she had to do now was cement an agreement, and she could be off on her merry way, return home, and shrink away back to her den to vomit her anxiety onto the floor.
For now, she offered a charming smile. "I feel this union," she glanced at the fidgeting Knight, his discomfort and connection to Wintrystar lost on her, before continuing, "will benefit both of our clans. SummerClan has just clawed itself out of dire straits and I think we've proven we won't be pushed around so easily in the future, and WinterClan has a lot of enemies. If we ally our clans, our enemies would have to contend with the two strongest Mountain Clans."
Cleaverwoof Poor foolish Sunstar thinking the hard part is over. She’s gotta win Wintrystar over first lol all she’s done is caught her attention
Wintrystar narrowed her eyes, a frown settling on to her face and her claws extending from irritation. “You speak of a dire strait and yet I have heard nothing about this.” Mint gaze sweeping over to her son with obvious displeasure at the lack of knowledge. “You speak of a union and yet I see no need for it. WinterClan has faced its own enemies, alone and come out just fine. Why ever would we need your assistance? Do you believe us weak?” The words were practically a hiss, daring the new leader to agree with her and say that WinterClan was weak. They may have lost in their battle against the regime and DayClan but there was no way the prideful sovereign would allow that to be tossed in her face without retaliation. Though, the she-cat did not disagree with the two strongest mountain clans comment as even as a kit, she’d appreciated SummerClan’s strength. Strength she would not hesitate to attack if this leader provoked her.
Sunstar's eyes widened in horror at how Wintrystar's mood seemed to escalate all of a sudden, now on the defensive and lashing out. She winced away, fighting the impulse to turn and flee the scene, and let the tense silence curdle between them as she weighed her options. She was genuinely surprised SummerClan’s plight escaped notice- moreso since she'd told that nuisance of a WinterClan warrior about it- but it wouldn't do any good to try damage control on that particular topic; time for some good old fashioned honesty.
"About two and a half moons ago, Ratstar was critically injured and our deputy was away. We were invaded after Aspenstar found out, took over, and forced us to live like NightClan cats in our own home, brutalized, and they took half of our herbs and most of our prey. I don't think WinterClan is weak, believe you me. Your clan is terrifying. I'm not saying you need this, but wouldn't it help to have it?"
She’d been on edge regarding this meeting since it had been requested and while her interest had been piqued at first, the sovereign wasn’t so sure anymore. “And what help would that be? You just admitted your clan was over taken due to poor leadership. You are newly appointed, no? So what faith would I have that your leadership would be any better?” Did she take her as a fool? Wintrystar would not align herself, her clan, nor marry off one of her sons to just anyone, especially not to a clan that just admitted to a weakness! Who’d Sunstar even remain the leader of the clan? What good would it do to make negotiations with a temporary leader of a clan when she could make no garuntee that they would hold through? There were too many if’s to feel comfortable and besides that, Wintrystar didn’t feel as though WinterClan was walking out with nay benefits. They would be losing one of their stronger warriors, one of her sons, and an eligible bachelor. Plus they would be in an alliance which practically stated that you were required to be of assistance in a battle the other clan became involved in. With the change in leadership and lack of knowing the cat before her, Wintrystar did not feel comfortable making that agreement just yet, especially when it seemed that SummerClan was asking for a lot and giving little to nothing in return.
