"Carnagepanic! Carnagepanic! Hurry, hurry, hurry! Valleyrose needs you like RIGHT NOW!"
Vividcanary's melodic screeching likely still rung in the young tom's ears as the newest Janus practically drug him away from his border patrol, back through the maze, and straight into camp. She offered him no explanation but have a big smile of her face and a spring to her step, so this wasn't bad news, probably? Before long they made it to camp and she beckoned Carnagepanic to follow her up to the High Priestess's quarters.
"Gosh, you move so slow! This is a big deal --- hurry up!" She twittered before disappearing into the opening.
The words spun around in his mind, dust in a desert storm.
Valleyrose. Needs Me. NOW?
Vividcanary, his former apprentice, was fetching him for something good, probably good, because she was smiling, so either it was good or she was a sadist-- that was possible but he hoped it wasn't--- so it might be something good, but what good things might be happening?
It was silly, and yet there it was, the first and most terrifying, yet impossible thought: IS VALLEYROSE GIVING BIRTH?
"Uh--- I'm coming," Carnagepanic stammered as he stumbled through the den after her.
Carnagepanic's terrifying thought wasn't too far off - when he entered the den, curled up in one of Littlestar's sick nests was a still-healing Valleyrose with four little bundles of fur curled up against her side. They were older kits, at least a week old, and the den didn't smell of birthing, so it was very apparent that these kits were not delivered by Valleyrose personally, not that anyone would think twice that she was their biological mother given how they looked. All of the kits were some form a calliby save for the lone, brown-furred tom. They were sleeping peacefully although starting to stir as Vividcanary ooed and awed at them.
"Carnagepanic," Valleyrose purred, her sunstone eyes brimming with love and hope. Ever since her incident where she had broken her leg, the young she-cat had been depressed and den-ridden. This would be the first time in a while that she seemed to be truly happy, "Since I'm already on bedrest for the next moon or so, I figured, well... What better way could I serve my Clan than by giving these darlings a couple of loving parents? I-I know you said you weren't ready, and I know that I shouldn't have agreed to this before I spoke with you, but..." Her eyes began to tear up and she paused for a moment, "... but they need me and I need them. Carnagepanic, you'll be their father, right?"
They couldn't be real. Valleyrose wasn't pregnant.
But they were there. Real flesh and blood. Solid. Curled up at his mate's side.
CARNAGEPANIC WAS A FATHER.
Carnagepanic opened his mouth to respond and made several unintelligible high-pitched noises. For several long seconds, he looked on the verge of passing out or fleeing. Frozen in the entrance of the den, pupils blown to hell, he seemed unaware of the whimpering leaving his own mouth; then, finally, he closed his jaw and there was silence.
He nodded vigorously. He stumbled forward and crumbled at her side, laying with his nose an inch from one of the kits, still wordless, still terrified. He couldn't say no to her, of course he'd be a father, but Carnagepanic, a FATHER? He'd already failed with his practice daughter, she became a Janus instead, how could he handle FOUR new kits?
"Valleyrose... I think something's wrong with your mate," Vividcanary whispered, definitely loud enough for Carnagepanic to hear, "Should I go get Littlestar...?"
"No, no, he'll be okay. No need to bother Littlestar right now," Valleyrose replied, "How about you give the two of us some privacy, Viv?"
Vividcanary frowned and looked at the kits with affection, but nodded and got back to her paws, "Auntie will be right back!" She said to the kits before exiting the den entirely.
With Vividcanary gone, Valleyrose leaned forward and touched her nose to Carnagepanic's and then closed her eyes. She stayed still like that for a long time, breathing slow and steady, trying to get her mate to match her pace. The scariest part was over, she tried to tell him, but in the moment she didn't need words to communicate it. Finally she pulled away and gave her mate a lick on the top of the head.
"Would you like to meet them?" She purred in a low, loving voice, "They have the most beautiful names."
Her touch and patience soothed him. His anxious thoughts continue to rage, an unyielding storm that refused to bend under anything except the direst circumstances, but as his breathing slowed, they lost their power over him. He pushed them away and looked back up at her as she pulled away, blinking gratefully.
"Ye-yeah," he murmured shakily. He pushed himself back up to his paws, sitting awkwardly as he stared down at the tiny beings they were now responsible for. They still overwhelmed him, but he wouldn't lose focus this time, he couldn't.
"Did you name them?" Carnagepanic hesitated, looking back at her face. "They aren't-- where did they come from?"
"No, I didn't name them. I believe their biological father did but it's hard to say. He's... well, he's not saying much," Valleyrose knew this question was coming but still struggled to approach it. She had only been with the kits a sort time and yet already viewed them as her precious children. She'd die for them. She'd never be the same without them. So thinking about the fact that they had another parent, a parent that wasn't her or Carnagepanic, that would still very much be a part of their lives, was hard for her to accept, "It's Perfectstorm. He brought them into camp not long after you left for your patrol. He hasn't revealed where they came from or who their mother is."
The implication was pretty clear - if Perfectstorm was keeping secrets, it was probably because he had done something very, very wrong to get them here. Still, Valleyrose did her best to stay positive about it. It would do no one, especially the kits, any good for her to worry about all the 'what ifs' her mind was formulating on the subject.
"The brown one is the only tom, poor guy," She changed subject rather abruptly but intentionally, "Galavantkit. The other three are Angelkit, Amitykit and Gildedkit," With each name revealed she gently brushed the tom of the correct kit with her paw, "Funny how they all look like us, huh? Galavantkit's coat is the same color as my father's and Gildedkit is my spitting image. And so many calicos! We are so blessed."
Carnagepanic bit his lip. These kits were the leader's grandchildren. Even if Perfectstorm didn't want them - and why wouldn't he? - his family was the next in line to look after them. Valleyrose and Carnagepanic had no right to raise these kittens. What could he provide that an experienced parent, or even the leader herself, could not? They couldn't separate the litter from their family. Perfectstorm should raise them, he was their father... if he was their father. If the tom was keeping secrets from them, maybe the true parents of the litter were other cats entirely. Maybe they had a different mother and father, and now Valleyrose was curled around stolen kits...
"It is a funny coincidence," he agreed, but he didn't linger on the kittens for long. "Valleyrose... I know you want a family, but we can't take them." He shuffled his paws. "You know that, right?"
Valleyrose had been with Carnagepanic long enough to know her mate often misunderstood things. A lot of times it was cute, but other times it was not, and this was definitely one of the nots. Her heart rate began to pick up, causing one of the kits to let out a squeak before nuzzling back into her belly fur. Is he really denying that these kits are ours?
Perhaps she should start at the beginning.
"Perfectstorm sought me out and asked me to raise them, and Littlestar is out preparing herbs for me at this very second to get my milk to come in. I can't very well back out of this now, in fact, I won't. Please... Carnagepanic, please, will you do this with me?"
Tears were in her eyes but she wore a determined expression. She could be freakishly strong when she needed to be and, when she got like this, there was nothing you could do to change her mind. It was a trait she'd inherited from her mother.
"Will you be their father, or will I be doing this alone?"
Carnagepanic hesitated, unconvinced. Her story didn't make sense. Not that he thought she was lying -- he would never accuse her of that -- but surely Perfectstorm was holding back. Where had the kits really come form, and why wasn't his family raising them? Why Valleyrose? Questions swirled in his mind, but he recognized the stubbornness in her eyes, and her question broke him.
"Of course I will," he murmured with a sigh, bending down to touch his muzzle to her forehead. "I-I just... I don't know... I just..." his voice trailed away again, and he let it go. He was lost and confused about how this ever happened, he was terrified of being a father, but if she was this determined that she would leave him and raise her kits alone, what could he do? There was nothing left to say. He could share his concerns with her again later.
He tilted his head down to look at the tiny kittens again. His lips quivered. "They're awfully small. Are they supposed to be that small?"
Valleyrose immediately relaxed when Carnagepanic yielded. To be honest, she knew he would. She didn't make it a habit to manipulate him but at this point, since she knew him so well, it was easy to do. She hated herself for it but this one was instance where she could not back off, this was what she had always wanted and she would do anything to make it work. Anything.
"Thank you for dong this with me, Carnagepanic... I have a lot of questions too, you know. But right now I can only worry about what I can control. If I worry too much about the unknowns, I'll never be able to rest, and that goes for everything, not just our kits," She answered honestly, then happily embraced the change in subject, "They are only a few days old at best, maybe even younger. Littlestar gave Perfectstorm quite the scolding for moving kits so young during leaf-bare, but thankfully they all seem to do doing very well."
