Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"Moonblight, hold up." The tom in question, accompanied unsurprisingly by Sagebristle, halted at his summons. Phantomfox, with a nod to his pseudo-daughter to dismiss her, beckoned the newly minted Loyal Guard to follow him, leading the tom out of camp and into the shadowy woods in relative silence, broken only by the somber owl hoots and occasional frog croak.
There was some division on the subject of their promising pair of recruits that Phantomfox and Aspenstar couldn't find agreement on. She valued Moonblight's rigidity over Sagebristle's...tenacity, for lack of better word, but the Loyal Guard Captain sourced that to hesitation he intended to snuff out. He couldn't have anyone in his ranks that wasn't wholly devoted to everything it entailed. Moonblight might have been little more than a juvenile adult at this point but he was a soldier now; he would be treated like one. "We're on a very special assignment tonight, you and I. One that must be kept between us unless I tell you otherwise, understood?"

Moonblight had been excited about his ceremony, and even after it, not much had changed in his demeanor. There was an innocence with him, a softness that just seemed so intrinsically in his personality that even when he changed his colours like a chameleon, there was part of him that wished to help, not to harm. It was easily translated into hesitation, which was true; he had always been more a lover than a fighter, but perhaps what Aspenstar had seen that Phantomfox hadn't was that Moonblight's rigidity wasn't rigid at all.
No, he was as changeable as the phases of the moon he had been named after.
It was malleability; he had always had this deep-seated need to impress others, and when Phantomfox asked him to join, he immediately came along, trotting alongside the older tom with a brightness in his eyes, already observing the other cat, as if to gauge what he wanted, what he expected from him. "Of course sir," he nodded, hesitating for a moment before asking, "may I ask what the assignment is?"
The difference between them was, where Moonblight sought to replicate one's desires in his actions, Phantomfox's actions were not a performance he put on. He knew his purpose, existed for it, believed whole-heartedly in the cause that had cost him everything: His mate, his son, the family he and Rosethorn could have created together. He was an embodiment of it... and he couldn't be sure that Moonblight felt the same, inspecting the younger tom's bright eyes critically for a glimpse of substance, his reflection the only thing that peered back at him.
"There's a band of loners that have settled down outside of our territory," he said, turning back to face forward. "It's our duty to observe them and gauge whether they're a threat to NightClan or not, and if they are, they're to be eliminated." What he didn't say was how he and Aspenstar already assessed these particular cats, their way of life and the nuances of their relationships, and had deemed their threat level to be inconsequential. That was perhaps the most dangerous thing to be as they now had a bright red target painted right over them.

Moonblight nodded at his words, but if Phantomfox wished to see anything, any sign of true motives in Moonblight's eyes, he'd be sorely disappointed. Like the faces of the moon, his eyes were silent, with nothing but enthusiasm, only a reflection of what he assumed the other tom expected to see.
Yet when he was briefed about his assignment, his expression changed to a thoughtful one. An observation. He had never had much trouble with loners or rogues; after all, he had been one not long ago before joining NightClan, but he wasn't going to allow his own judgment to be skewed by his experiences. Larkspur had warned him of NightClan's expectations after all, and how lucky he had been to have a fate other than what most would have if they crossed NightClan's territory.
"Yes sir," he replied with a nod, "is there anything in particular we should be looking out for?"
"Why don't you tell me that? What should we be watching for, expecting from them? What makes them threatening to you and NightClan?" If he could gauge the way Moonblight perceived the world around him, cats' conditional morality, and whether he himself stood in the gray area or if right and wrong were more distinctly separate to him, then Phantomfox stood a greater chance of correcting him while he wasn't cemented in his beliefs.

He gave the thought a couple of moments to mull over. "I guess a lot of it is about their size and numbers, and their attitude," he replied thoughtfully, "most of the cats don't plan to settle around, and they have a goal in mind, to get from A to B, right? But if...if they have something else, you know...like kits, something worth protecting, then they get a bit more unpredictable so that's a threat. If there's a leader of them, they'll follow the leader who might have a bone to pick or something to prove, so that's also unpredictable. If they have a lot of them, they'll be overconfident and think they can dictate the rules, which...well, it can play both ways, right?"
As simple-minded as the young guard seemed to be, it was clear his mind was working overtime. "Each of those have advantages and disadvantages so I guess...I guess the threat is not seeing the bigger picture ahead of time when dealing with a group."
