Did I just use a Bo Burnham song as a title yes yes I did
Cleaver Tidaldream would never admit she was having a panic attack. But in this moment she was most definitely have a first time parent panic attack. She had only been in Swiftclan for less than a day and had already been told to stay in the nursery to watch her three adopted kits when she had tried to sneak off on a patrol. If only everyone knew they weren’t actually her’s to begin with. Everyone just assumed they were her biological kits. She heard clanmates mumble behind her back about having a secret lover. That the kits had been the reason why she had disappeared. The kits in question she kept them at a tails length never actually let them get close to her as the small family had tried to track down Swiftclan. She didn’t baby them like most parents did to their own children. Though she wasn’t completely heartless comforted them when they got boo boos or had nightmares at night. But was rather awkward about it. As she watch the three brothers play when she noticed Hawthornkit chewing on something. She felt the blood run from her face and she quickly darted over to the kit. “What do you have in your mouth!” She panicked roughly grabbing the kit trying to pry his mouth out. Her mind jumping to conclusions that whatever it was that was in his mouth was a threat and would cause him harm.
well then i'll have to listen to it on loop every time i reply
Breezestep had been overjoyed by her daughter's return. She had not found a good chance to speak to her about them before now, swept away by a patrol the day before, but now she had cleared her schedule to come to meet her new little grandchildren. The small, fluffy she-cat trotted into the temporary camp and was only halfway across to the den when Tidaldream raced to one of the kits and started prying open his mouth.
She dashed to her side and placed a reassuring paw over Tidaldream's. "Let me," she murmured, gently reaching over. She felt the kit's jaw ajar with one toe and cleared his mouth out with a practiced sweep of her claw, careful not to scratch his mouth, and pulled out what was filling his mouth. Breezestep let go of it and pulled her paw back to see what she had found.
Tidaldream felt relief wash over her when she saw her mom Breezestep race to her rescue. She removed her paw and moved out of the way to allow her room to work. She didn’t know why she was panicking. Was it the secret that she was pretending the kits were her’s. Or the thought that Muddystar and Delusionallove would come and smite her if she allowed one of the kits to die. “Thank you.” She meowed leaning in to see what her mother was holding. It looked like a rather large tuff of fur that came from possibly a rabbit? She felt her mind draw a blank as she glance down at the young kit who looked back up at the two older cats with a mischievous smile.
Breezestep couldn't help an amused smile as she examined the fur. It might be enough to tickle his throat, but she doubted the kitten would have choked on it. Tidaldream was being a little protective, but so was every new mother; she had been the same.
"Of course," she purred to her. She crouched down to smile at Hawthornekit, adding, "are you okay now?"
Hawthornkit looked from Breezestep to Tidaldream wondering why the pair of them were staring at him like that. “I’m find can I go play now?” He asked hoping to go back to his brothers. He didn’t give either of them a chance to answer before he scampered away.
“He is his father’s son.” Tidaldream meowed flat her ears had flatten ever so slightly and she watched the kit run away with an annoyed look.
The queen chuckled, watching him run off fondly. He was a strong and healthy kit, and her eyes shimmered with pride in her grandson.
Breezestep hadn't planned on asking Tidaldream who the father was -- if she wished for secrecy, she would grant it -- but now that her daughter mentioned it, she couldn't resist prodding. "Will we be meeting his father?" she asked lightly. "I would love to meet the cat who stole your heart."
“We will not.” Tidaldream’s voice coming out barely a whisper. “He’s unimportant to me now. I’m sure someday they will ask, but it’s best they don’t know him.”She said pain filling her voice as she gestured to the three kits who were blissfully unaware that Tidaldream was talking about him. It pained her to think that she had the three kits following in her lie. She knew behind closed doors and away from the peering eyes of the rest of the clan. The three kits were bitter and upset that they had to leave their actual parents behind. She only hoped that someday they would understand the sacrifices she and her cousin had made to make sure his kits were safe.
Breezestep placed her paw over her daughter's and squeezed it gently to show her understanding. A queen had a right to keep these secrets, especially if they pained her, and she understood that well. Her husband had once been from another clan. She had been lucky that Beck was willing to leave his home behind to be with her, but not every cat would have such a loyal mate that was capable of making that choice, and sometimes it was best to keep secrets until the time was right. Some things needed to happen naturally.
"I'm glad to have met them. You'll be a good mother," she told her, with confidence, as she let her go and replaced her paw at her side.
