Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
As night fell, the clan's steady pace ground to a halt, and they began to make camp. Traveling back to the survival clans was a long journey that left an ache deep in Breezestep's paws, and her tired body urged her to find a quiet nest to curl up inside and rest. The grumble in her belly was quiet and distant, and sleep was far more tempting than eating, but she knew if she was hungry, the rest of the clan would be as well. Their travels had not left them with much time for gathering prey; someone needed to go hunting to refill the pile.
The gray-and-white she-cat sighed and headed for the edge of the throng of cats settling down for the night. She wove through them, locating a cat who did not look too tired, and asked: "Come for a hunt with me? The clan could use some prey to fill their bellies."
Morninglight stood at the edge of her clan as they started to settle for the night. After traveling all day, her paws were tired, but her mind was wide awake. She stared off into the night, longing to explore her new surroundings. Breezestep's voice brought her back, and she looked up, surprised to find another cat in front of her. "Sure" she replied after a moment. She knew she wouldn't be able to sleep, anyways. "Where should we go?" She asked, looking back into the night. Being unfamiliar with their surroundings, she found that she was a little uneasy going off alone, and was glad to have someone to join her.
Breezestep considered. They were too far from the territory she had once hunted, and it would be a waste of time to journey that far in search of prey. There must be some closer, but where? She thought back along the path they had just walked. They would have scared off any prey they passed, but there had been a wide-open field beside them that might have some small rodents.
"Back the way we came," she suggested, "there was a low, grassy field. We might have some luck there." She had to hope they would, or the clan might go hungry.
"Good idea." Morninglight agreed. She started in that direction, with a flick of her tail to indicate for Breezestep to join her. "Hopefully we didn't scare everything away on our way past." She mused quietly, hardly loud enough to be heard. "If anything we can wait them out." She trod quietly but quickly towards the field, ears forward and nose up, fully aware of her surroundings.
She fell in step beside the warrior, content to let her take the lead. Her paws still ached from the long journey, but walking toward the field was igniting her second wind, and she felt some energy begin to flow back through her again. "Enough time may have passed that the prey may be returning to investigate our path," she replied, though she shared Morninglight's worries.
As they neared the field she slowed her pace, taking a deep breath. They had been right, and the air was rich with prey scents; there was food to be found here, mice and voles at least. Now the only question left was whether the prey was hiding.
She positioned herself low to the ground, slowing her pace alongside Breezestep. Scanning the field with both eyes and nose, she desperately hoped something would pop out.
Morninglight's stomach growled quietly as they emerged into the clearing and her nostrils filled with the smells of fresh prey nearby. She hadn't realized how hungry she was, and knew the rest of her clan was probably feeling the same after their trek today. She hoped they would be able to catch plenty.
Her eyes flickered past something, and returned to it. A small shiny set of eyes peered out of a small hole in the ground. Bingo. Silently, she pointed her nose in the direction of the animal to indicate to the other warrior. She couldn't tell what it was from the glimmering eyes, but it must be prey, she reasoned.
Breezestep skimmed the tops of the grasses, her ears pricked and straining for the shuffling of bodies moving between the foliage. There must be something nearby for them to eat. She paused as she noticed Morninglight's stillness, glancing back toward her, and followed her gesture to look at the hole in the ground. From her angle, she couldn't make out the eyes within the darkness, but she trusted Morninglgiht: there must be prey there.
The small she-cat shifted her stance, falling lower into a crouch as she eased a step closer to the warrior. 'Lead the way,' she mouthed, eyeing the hole. If each of them circled around one side, if the creature tried to flee outside of the den, they could certainly catch it.
