Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
How much longer until the current swarm of kits flooding the camp were made into warriors and were out of Hystericstar's (hypothetical) fur? They had to be almost to that point, right? It felt like it's been at least 10 moons since they were all found in his den, but alas, it was not to be. They were still very much kits, and still very much following and pestering the leader every chance that they got. At this point, even his own den wasn't safe anymore. He had been taking every chance that he could to sneak off to the Secret Garden, but he still had to spend a significant amount of time in camp.
This time, he had actually joined Jayjack on a patrol just to get away. It was just the two of them in the rather chilly weather - at least to Hystericstar's standards. He was sure that Chestnutheart was glaring at him right now, yelling at him for leaving his stupid sweater back in a hiding place in his den. He would rather suffer than wear that thing. Shaking his head, he glanced at the tom next to him. It had been rather odd for the aurulent to ask him on a patrol, but he had been glad for the chance to escape.
Jayjack's strict methods and unrelenting nature had outcast him from the rest of the clan during his youth, but as an Aurulent, his skills were finally appreciated. The clan's rowdy apprentices were following his commands and growing to be decent warriors; without Calamitystar's disruptive influence, he finally felt their clan was making progress. Certainly, the time he was investing in personally raising a few litters of kittens was paying off, and with every well-trained protege, he grew more confident in his place as the mentor of his clan.
His popularity within the clan was rapidly devolving, however, and he was picking up several thorns in his side. In particular, Chaicrisp was becoming a bother; she insisted on helping raise his newest litter of kittens just because she'd helped find them, and despite his many reservations, he had not pushed her away yet. He had naively believed the distraction would be good for her, but instead, she took it as an excuse to spend more time around him. Jayjack had to get away -- and the easiest way was to enlist the help of his leader. No cat wanted to join a patrol with Hystericstar on it.
"Let's head away from the camp and then we can talk," Jayjack told him briskly. As long as they were out here, he would attend to business. It was rare to get a moment to discuss the leader's plans with him. "I'll catch Poisonrush up on all the details later." He spoke with the other Aurulent only rarely; they weren't strong friends and he didn't expect they would be, despite their similarities. He simply did not have that time to waste. Besides, this was a moment for just the two of them. "My kits will be apprentices in a few moons. Can I count on Mastershrine to mentor one?" He had taught the warrior well; whether he appreciated the lessons or not, Jayjack was counting on him now to pass them on.
Hystericstar always appreciated the fact that Jayjack always got right to what he wanted to say - wasted time was one of his least favorite things, after all. The more that was wasted, the less time that he got to spend with herbs. Others may have viewed it as almost obsessive, but the tom truly got very little time with his experiments anymore. His cough seemed to be worsening lately, too, so he needed any second he could get to try and cure it. This patrol may not have been planned, but he was sure that he could pick up a few herbs during it.
"Yes, of course," he replied, giving a single small nod of his head. If he remembered correctly, the warrior already had an apprentice right now, but surely whoever the apprentice was would be fully trained by then. If not, perhaps Mastershrine would be stuck with two apprentices for a little while. "I assume you're also going to want to personally train one as well?" Maybe he could even pass two apprentices to the Aurulent. With the amount of kits they currently had, it was only a matter of time before apprentices had to double up anyway.
The thought of the kits sent a shiver up Hystericstar's spine again - or perhaps it was the breeze. Both of them were equally terrible. Once again, the hairless tom glanced at Jayjack, this time suspicion shined in his eerie gaze. "You weren't the one who brought them all here, are you?" Last time, Hystericstar was fairly certain that it had been Crownglass's doing, but this second time he wasn't quite so sure.
Jayjack considered the question. Attending to the apprentices was one of his most important tasks and every cat needed his attention, not just his own apprentice; he couldn't afford to compromise anyone's training. He also could not deny that their clan had a lot of apprentices to look after, and he could easily handle one 'paw of his own while keeping an eye on the rest of them.
"I will," he agreed, leaving the final decision up to Hystericstar whether it was one of his own four or a different apprentice he ultimately ended up training. His litter would have personalized training from him even if they had other mentors. While Jayjack saw himself more as their mentor than their father, he could sense that was a losing battle, and even Chaicrisp seemed certain he had adopted the pack.
His blue eyes cut at Hystericstar, wary of the question. His tone was even as he replied, "Chaicrisp found them while we were out on patrol. I brought them to the camp to raise as our new warriors." He would take responsibility for his litter, but the mess of kittens that had arrived the same day? That was a mystery the leader would never solve.
Hystericstar made a small grunt in recognition as Jayjack answered the first of his questions. He had heard many apprentices complain about Jayjack's rough training, but had never bothered to do anything about it. After all, it wasn't like the Aurulent was actually hurting them. No, they mostly seemed upset that they couldn't slack off, which really just kept them out of Hystericstar's way more than normal. Perhaps he should give Jayjack the most clingy kit as an apprentice.
"Mm," Hystericstar hummed in reply, though his eyes narrowed slightly. He wasn't quite sure if he believed that the other tom had nothing to do with the other kits, but he decided to let the topic drop - for now at least. There would probably be other opportunities to interrogate him. Instead, the hairless tom turned his gaze forward again, ignoring as a squirrel scrambled into the brushes beside them. "This is a border patrol, no?" he asked. Surely Jayjack wasn't expecting him to hunt.
Jayjack snorted. "It's whatever we want it to be." He had little faith in the leader's hunting abilities and even less in his fighting prowess. Dragging him along the border would be a futile task if there was any danger to be found, or any cats to intimidate, but FallClan had been at peace lately. It should be safe, and if it wasn't, he could hold his own and defend their leader without any issue. Jayjack wasn't just an aurulent because he was an excellent mentor, indispensable warrior, incredibly handsome, and a revered senior member of the clan -- there was strength in his broad shoulders and cleverness in his shrewd gaze.
Steering the conversation back towards kits, he pressed: "What else do you have planned? I don't mind mentoring an apprentice, but you will not be abandoning us at the campground again."
Well, that would have to be a good enough answer. At the very least, Hystericstar could believe that the Aurulent didn't expect anything from him that he could just use a warrior for instead. The leader had no doubt that he could kill a squirrel, but it wouldn't be in the way of hunting. Poisoned creatures aren't a great source for food. It was, however, a wonderful way to kill other cats, and Hystericstar had no desire to actually kill anyone in his clan - especially not Jayjack. The amount of work that would be on the leader's shoulders if Jayjack were to die would probably be doubled.
You will not be abandoning us at the campground again.
Hystericstar huffed, a frown forming on his face as Jayjack pressed the kit issue further. "The exchange apprentices learned a lot there, did they not?" he asked in response, then shook his head. "A day or two might work, but I don't think sending you there for another moon would go over well a second time." But, what did he have planned? He had very little time to figure out what to do with the many apprentices that they would soon have. He could only hope that the large apprentice den was big enough. "Perhaps we could arrange another exchange, but send all of them away."
"Did you actually ask the exchange apprentices if they learned anything?" Jayjack shot back, amused rather than annoyed. "SwiftClan tried to dump all of their apprentices on the other clans -- if you were paying attention, they moved away while their apprentices were still in our campgrounds -- but we sent them back anyway. The other clans will do the same, and we'll have to deal with the 'paws anyway. If we keep them close, we can make sure they learn the proper skills. StarClan knows the other clans are sorely lacking."
He shook his head, disappointed in their peers, and briskly went on. "We can't teach them well in such a large group. They can only play games for so long, Hystericstar."
