Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Life had always been a game to Juniperdust- know the rules inside and out, think two steps ahead, and she'd be poised to win. Before the takeover had happened, she had been a respected warrior, a potential deputy candidate should the position open up. Never mind that there wasn't a genuine bone in her body- the lean gray-furred she-cat was a world-class actress, and public opinion of her was high.
Now, though, the rules had changed. There were two forces at play- the simmering Summerclan resistance and the iron-clad grip of Nightclan. It was hard to tell which would win out in the end, so Juniperdust needed to play her cards carefully.
The plan, as always, had been carefully thought through before being put into action. Juniperdust had planted the seeds among her fellow Summerclan warriors- she was going to speak with Stormstar on their behalf, to work through the issues everyone was having. Find a compromise. When she approached Stormstar, she would come bearing the gift of insider information.
"Stormstar?" Juniperdust called from outside of the leader's den, pausing. "My name is Juniperdust. I wanted to speak with you, if now is a good time."
SummerClan was kept on a strict new sleep/wake cycle, hunting and patrolling at night and sleeping during the day, yet it seemed that Stormstar himself was the one having the most trouble adjusting. The blue tom was still slumbering in his den when a voice called to him from outside and he slowly awakened once more, blinking sleepily. Leadership was exhausting, especially when compounded with his day trips back home, and he wasn't thrilled to have someone disturbing his sleep tonight.
He sat up, passing his tongue over his chest in a few cursory licks to chase away the last dredges of sleep. "Come on in, Juniperdust," Stormstar called back eventually.
No SummerClan cat had willingly come to speak to him thus far. He was tentatively curious to hear what she had to say, but if this turned out to be another warrior prepared to complain, his disapproval would be world-class.
Juniperdust entered when bidden, her well-toned gray form appearing in the entrance. She kept a respectful distance, nodding in his direction as she glanced around the den. Strange, how quickly it could change hands. It was almost heartening.
"I can sense you're the type who doesn't like to beat around the bush," the warrior said, lips twitching as she settled her gaze back on Stormstar. "I've come to offer my assistance in any way I can. I want this transition to go as smoothly as possible for Summerclan as well as Nightclan, and while the others don't want to cooperate, I figured it was the easiest way to assure that everyone is satisfied with our new... arrangements."
Stormstar had wasted no time after inheriting the den from Ratstar before making it his own. The sheep's wool and heather that SummerClan cats used were itchy and uncomfortable; Doefreckle had led him to gather some moss, but on his own, the leader had journeyed to fetch soft, fuzzy petals and a few pieces of hay to weave into the structure. The den was still simple for his tastes, he had lost some of the artifacts he once kept close to paw, but it would do for now.
And in the corner near the entrance, he'd piled up a few large stones into a pile that would certainly be a hassle to clear once he left the clan.
"Well, it is certainly a relief to know some cats in this clan are sensible," Stormstar greeted, his keen gaze on her. "I fully agree. This may not be ideal for your clan, but the truth is that Aspenstar could have chosen a far worse option for leader; I have no interest in destroying your clan, and I want us to work together. I'm certain I have a use for you."
Juniperdust glanced over the decorations once more, making notes about them and figuring she could puzzle out the clues to how they related to Stormstar's personality later. Personality wise, he didn't seem as unhinged as Aspenstar, but far more professional, and that was something she could work with.
A smooth transition and a link between Summerclan and Nightclan could only reflect well on her. She would be an ambassador and peacemaker in the eyes of Summerclan, and a useful tool in the eyes of Nightclan. And whether Stormstar stayed in charge or Devotedcrow came back and assumed leadership, they'd need a deputy eventually. Someone... reliable. Like herself.
"I'm glad to hear you don't wish to harm Summerclan- and like the others, I never believed that. If you can come in and toughen us up, it'll be a good thing. We've been too weak for too long." Juniperdust sat, tucking her tail neatly over her front paws with a smile. "I look forward to working together- let me know what you need me to do, and I'm your girl."
Toughen them up? Stormstar's brow raised fractionally. That was a dangerous game for him to play; after all, their weakness enabled him to hold onto his power for longer. The leadership of a cowed, weakened clan was the boon Aspenstar had given him and any sensible cat would not undermine his own authority, but offering them strength was the only way to align their interests with his own. A strong clan could turn against him or Aspenstar, and it was a worthwhile idea.
"What talents are you here to offer me?" he queried, tilting his head. "A swift messenger, a spy, or a fighter? Or is your gift honeyed words to sway your clanmates to my slide?"
Juniperdust watched the raise of his brow, the tilt of his head, her mind working to gauge his curiosity. "I don't deny that I'm a good fighter. I also speak well, though the clan is turned against you so thoroughly it would take more than my honeyed words to win them over- at least for now." She tilted her own head with a smile before continuing.
"What I can offer you is information. These cats trust me, and that gives me access to sentiments and plans that they would never share with any of your warriors or guard. To keep a successful hold on the group you'll need to know these things. I can give you access to them- and I can plant whatever information you want, false or true. Over time, I can certainly help soften Summerclan's rage towards Nightclan and towards you. For now, though, I can find out whatever you need to know, and assist in the implementation of any new rules."
