Larkspur's days had gone by in a blur. She no longer slept in the leader's den and the two strictly spoke on business terms only. She went about her day, doing the minimum of what she must to help keep the clan up and running. She felt hollow, and strange. She'd always felt sure of her place, but now? She wasn't so positive.
The feminine pads through camp, attempting to find cats to patrol with. She sighs softly to herself, knowing it would be difficult to find cats with how many had gone to Summerclan in the takeover. Her belly churned as she continued on through her camp.

It was Moonblight who she first stumbled upon. Her own young apprentice, now grown into a fully-fledged warrior...or actually, not a warrior, a loyal guard. His eyes brightened immediately upon seeing his mentor; despite all that had happened he still had that childlike wonder to him, the bright-eyed childishness so evident the first time the two had met.
"Larkspur!" he greeted with a smile, "good morning!" He hadn't seen his mentor in what felt like weeks, at least, since he had graduated from being her mentee and became the little soldier under Aspenstar's grip. "Are you going out on a patrol today?"
She blinks with a blank stare in the direction of her former apprentice, before she shakes out her head, down to her tail. The exhaustion in her eyes was still evident, but they soften at the sight of the young tom. "Hello," she dips her head in greeting.
Larkspur had always been calm, collected, and regal. She no longer held her head high as she walked, and she seemed almost defeated. "Yes, are you available to possibly join me?" The black she-cat hoped he was, she didn't want to be alone in her thoughts again.

There was a flash of concern in his eyes at the way she looked at him, as if she wasn't really fully seeing him too. Was she okay? The young tom peered curiously at his mentor. She seemed tired, more so than she had ever seemed when they were training. He wanted to ask if she was okay, but after a moment, he decided against it. Perhaps for a later time, he thought.
"Of course!" he practically jumped on the opportunity to join her, "are we going hunting or on a border patrol today?" Perhaps in the forest, he'd ask if she was fine, he figured.
"Border patrol." Larkspur bites her tongue, wanting to say more about how she felt about Nightclan's takeover, but she stops. Moonblight was now apart of the Loyal Guard, and anything she said could potentially come out to be used against her. She didn't agree with anything that was happening right now, but Aspenstar already had her suspicions that she was disloyal.
"We'll start at the northern border and make our way down." Larkspur explains, flicking her tail to signal them to go.

Moonblight nodded at that, eager to get going. He didn't know why she seemed so worried, but he was eager to find out, after all. The young guard didn't seem to notice that his position was what was making her nervous; he still felt the same as he always was, and he truly was–still naive and young and full of zest for the world, unaware of the direction his clan was moving towards.
"Sounds good!" he piped up, trotting alongside Larkspur. They had walked a short distance in silence, before he finally broke it. "I feel like I haven't seen you since we were preparing for our final assessment," he laughed lightly, "it's almost unreal that I'm actually a warrior...do you...you know...miss us?" He gave his mentor a cheeky grin.
Quite frankly, Larkspur worried about how soon Moonblight and Sagebristle had been added to the Loyal Guard. She knew that they'd ranked top of their class, which she was extremely proud of, but it all seemed so rushed. Added in with the takeover, it was enough to keep her mind reeling. Larkspur adored her former apprentices and knew one day they would shine, but for now, she was quite worried for their mental and physical safety.
"I'm sorry," she gives a half smile in apology. "I've been... busy." she hesitates. Truly, she had been. Keeping the clan organized now that it was split in two was quite the process. She genuinely hated everything that was happening. Deep down, she was scared of the downfall of the clan. "How's the warrior life treating you?" she redirects the conversation to him, avoiding as many personal questions as possible.

Moonblight tilted his head to the side. As much as he had known that he'd rank pretty decently within NightClan, having a mentor such as her and a training partner like Sagebristle, he had never expected to be the cat chosen for the Loyal Guard. It had been a huge surprise when Aspenstar had asked to meet him outside of camp, asking him questions about himself that he could scarcely answer because he had known it was a test.
He still found their leader intimidating, and the way he could hardly read her made it all the more so. "It's been..." he didn't really know how to respond, and for a moment, he seemed to hesitate, as if thinking back to the last few days. He had found himself part of the SummerClan invasion, but he had been out in the territory–on a little day trip with Sagebristle actually–and it had gone well all up until they ran into some other SummerClan cats who had been furious with them. He was certain in Aspenstar's vision, that they were helping SummerClan through this but for that brief moment, he had been unsure. What were they doing in SummerClan?
"I guess it's a lot to learn too," he replied slowly, as if carefully selecting his words lest Larkspur thought he doubted his place in the Loyal Guard, "I...to be honest I thought it'd be a bit different you know? With everything going on, it's...kind of a lot to pick up on."
Larkspur gives Moonblight a sympathetic smile. Being apart of the Loyal Guard was already an immense responsibility. The weight of protecting the leader on the shoulders of the few was enough pressure. But with the added takeover, she couldn't imagine the stress any of the loyal guard was under. She snorts accidentally out loud, thinking of Stormreign (yeah, she would never call him Stormstar. No way in hell), and how he must be having the absolute time of his life over in summerclan.
The black cat didn't doubt Moonblight's place in the slightest. She had faith in both Sagebristle and Moonblight, and she was well aware of their skill. She just hated that this was the environment that they had been thrown into. "hopefully this will soon pass, and things will settle down." she gave no indication of her position. The statement could be read in multiple ways, such as the chaos passing and nightclan 2 working, or the chaos passing and everything settling back to normal.
The two continued to the old bear den, one of the places Larkspur needed to check. "I'm scared of asylum seekers," she explains, taking a quick glance. "I don't think they would be safe here. Not now."

He nodded at her words, subconsciously agreeing with her. As much as Aspenstar had kept him close, trying to train him in her ways–and subconsciously molding him to become more like her, her loyal little soldier–this was still the first few weeks of his position in the guard. He had yet to fully become a pawn of the leader. At heart, he was still the naive, optimistic young tom who wanted to please his mentor way too much, never presenting a single opinion of his own, rather reflecting those of the others surrounding him in an effort to be the perfect...whatever anyone really needed.
"Asylum seekers?" he echoed, blinking in confusion. He didn't know what Larkspur was referring to. "What are asylum seekers? What's going to happen to them?"
Larkspur knew this about Moonblight, which is what worried her the most. She wanted him to keep his childlike wonder of the world, and she prayed that this wouldn't tarnish him. She was already feeling jaded herself, which was far out of her character. Larkspur wasn't fond of the way that her clan was headed, but that's why she stayed. She had the slightest shred of hope that she could save it.
"Anyone seeking shelter away from a bad place." she explains, stepping into the den. She draws in the stale scent of cats and prey, but nothing new. She releases a sigh of relief. "I think if we found anyone they'd be taken as prisoners. I don't want that."

He nodded in understanding. After all, he had been one of those said cats too; his father had dropped him off here because he was too young to continue the journey. He had never quite forgotten that, and despite it all, he still wanted to go out and find the cat...he sighed. It was tough for cats out there to truly find a place to call home, huh?
"Do you really think so?" he asked, his voice smaller than it was earlier, "I mean...I was one of those cats before...and they didn't take me, prisoner, you know? I even got to be a Loyal Guard...wouldn't Aspenstar rather welcome cats into NightClan instead?"
Her gaze softens once more, and she lightly touches her tailtip to Moonblight's shoulder. There was so much about Aspenstar that the young warrior just didn't know. So much about her as well. She beckons him further into the cave after taking a look around to be sure no one was there who could eavesdrop.
"Moonblight, she kept you because you were a kitten." Larkspur explains gently, curling her tail around her paws, taking a nervous glance out towards the entrance of the den. "Had you been apprentice age or older, you would've had to prove your worth to the clan by spending time as prisoner. Aspenstar wishes no harm on kits or elders, but in between?" Larkspur sighs. Where she was now, she realized how much of a pawn she had been in the leader's game. And yet? She still held her dear.

Moonblight blinked, as if not quite understanding what she meant. She only kept him because he was a kit? Surely that wasn't the only reason why, right? Aspenstar had always paid attention to him...right? Sagekit had also joined...oh. The young tom seemed conflicted, confused.
"But I've...I've never seen a prisoner," he replied lamely, "and...Aspenstar's always been you know, nice to me and she's...doing what's best for the clan...right?"
Larkspur winces, wondering if she should've said anything at all. She didn't want Moonblight to feel lost or out of place. She truly cared about the young tom and his well being. "Luckily, most of the cats that come through here are kittens, so we rarely have prisoners. We used to be a bit more lenient, but I think Aspenstar wouldn't be so forgiving now."
"Aspenstar is doing what is best for the clan." Larkspur felt like she was lying through her teeth. This whole takeover was not good for either clan, but she would keep her mouth shut and follow like the loyal deputy she was.

Moonblight still felt a little insecure over what she had just said; he knew she was just trying to make him feel better, but the truth was out there, and he was suddenly not so sure anymore. Not that he hadn't been having a couple of doubts here and there; he had no attachment to SummerClan at all. In fact some of the cats there were just plain rude, but...seeing them cry out for help that night they had been patroling the borders had planted a seed within him, and even in dire conditions, that seed began to grow.
"Yeah," he agreed, though not as enthusiastically as he did before, "she probably has to make tough decisions for the rest of us." Who was he to judge? Still, it made the air a lot more awkward now as they marched towards the old bear's den.
There wasn't anything in the den, and she kept the silence because she wasn't sure of what to say. She realized now she had messed up, but there wasn't very much she could do about it now. Larkspur shakes out her fur and leaves border marks where they were necessary, finding nothing of importance.
"Soooo..." she begins, hoping to lighten the mood. "Sagebristle? How's she doing?"

Moonblight's ears immediately turned red. "What about her?" he asked immediately, almost defensive, as if expecting Larkspur to tease him about it before realizing that...oh, of course. They were training together. They were promoted together. Right. "Oh yeah, uh," he felt his face flush even more as he stammered, "yeah, she's technically second in charge apparently, but Aspenstar must've had a slip of judgment if she thinks I'll let Sagebristle boss me around."
Larkspur purrs in amusement, catching the easily flustered male's defensiveness. Ah, to be young and in love. "I'm surprised Aspenstar put her in charge so quickly, considering how soon you were promoted." she ponders for a moment. "She'll grow into the position. You'll grow into yours as well."
"I miss seeing you two everyday." Larkspur adds in. "Life seemed easier then."

He blushed at her words. "Thank you," he replied sheepishly, looking at his paws. He still didn't feel like he deserved the position he was given, but he'd take the compliment. He gave her a grin. "Well you can still see us everyday," he chimed brightly, "we should all go on a patrol together sometime, just like the old days."
