Sharp green eyes glinted in the shadows as she moved along them. A mouse skirted along the roots of a pine tree, and her ears angled forward. Kate-kun took a slow step forward, her paws were light and avoided the fallen needles and leaves that littered the forest floor. Kate was in total hunter mode. Her bobbed tail wiggled behind her, the scent of the mouse filling her mouth and nose. Her whiskers twitched, another step forward and she would soon pounce. Once again, earning her meal.

It was unfortunately really, that Hywel hadn't noticed that his niece was actually hunting, because otherwise, he wouldn't have trotted up to her like that, his weight making the ground shake just enough for the mouse's sensitive paws to notice. He had heard of her, though they had yet to meet. Still, he was eager to meet all of his sister's children one way or another.
"Kate-kun, right?" he greeted with a smile, unaware of how he had just made her lose her meal.

Her eyes snapped away from the mouse to the crow-brained idiot who had just decided to scare away her food. She snorted as it squeaked and darted away. Kate-kun straightened up, and turned her narrowed eyes to the cat who had cost her an empty belly. "Yeah, what do you want? You just scared away my dinner." Irritation flared within her eyes, her stubby tail wiggling back and fourth in frustration. She'd like to have tried to claw his ears off, but she knew better. He was a cat of the league, and if she wanted to get anywhere, she had to keep her cool.

He hadn’t noticed the mouse until that squeak and suddenly, his expression turned to one of apology. “I didn’t see that,” he admitted, glancing to the direction the mouse disappeared off to, “I can help you catch another one if you want? I just wanted to chat with you...”
She didn’t seem to recognise him at all. “You’ve never met me, but I know your mother,” he offered, glancing around, sniffing the air, “we’re still downwind if we look for prey in that direction.” He gestured to the moss covered rocks by a small stream.

Kate cut her eyes towards him again. They were narrowed and searching his eyes, he seemed sincere in his apology. However, Kate truly cared little for it. As he continued to speak about chatting with her, her ears twitched a little. What could this hunter possibly want with her, especially since she'd never even seen him before. The feline continued to stare at him, as if trying to figure out if she could recognize him or not, but nothing seemed to ring a bell in her head.
It was then that she felt a sudden growl push from her throat.
"I don't have a mother."
Kate turned abruptly and headed towards where the cat had mentioned, but clearly didn't expect him to follow. Whoever he was.

The tom frowned. This one, he thought, definitely inherited that attitude from her mother. He stared for a moment longer, before shaking his head and following quickly, as if hoping she’d slow down.
He wasn’t surprised by her words; Rhiannon had made it rather clear that she had rejected them from the start. Kier had certainly elaborated on it too, telling him all that he needed to know.
“Look, I know Rhiannon is a bit of a...well, you know, but even if she takes some time to come around—perhaps forever he thought—you have other family too, okay?”
He didn’t know about the dad, because surely the first thing he’d do when he saw him was to murder that son of a gun. “I’m Hywel,” he called out, “I’m your uncle.”

Great, he's following me. Kate felt her eyes roll in the back of her head as she walked. She even picked up the pace, perhaps he would get the hint. However, whenever he spoke once more, she spun around. She was smaller than he was, in fact, Kate was smaller than most cats that were even her age. Her size didn't matter to her though, that fire lit in her eyes and it seemed she was ready for a fight. Her little pink nose was almost touching his own, but she clearly had to stretch a little to get to that point.
"Look, I don't care. I'm not some mewling kit who hopes and prays to whatever gods are out there, that mommy will come running back and beg me to forgive her. She's dead to me. Do you understand that?" Her tongue was quick with her words, lacing like a razor.
Kate crinkled her muzzle as she sneered. "My only family is my brothers and my father." If she had it her way, her mother wouldn't even exist. Despite trying to act hard about it, the hurt that flashed in her eyes was there, even if only for a second. Kate was not one to admit being hurt, weaknesses, or anything that seemed close.

He blinked at her, noticing the rage in her eyes as she spoke of Rhiannon. His sister truly was treading a thin line with this. He sighed, hoping that Rhiannon wouldn’t regret this one day because surely, having three volatile children who hated your guts was not a great idea.
“Look I get that. Maybe she’s not really...mother material or anything, I can’t blame you for feeling that way but...if you ever want an uncle, I would love to get to know my nieces and nephews all right? You should at least get to know both sides of your heritage. I’ll even make it up to you about that mouse I scared off if you have lunch with me.”
His tone was one that was cheeky and playful but it had that underlying tone of ‘I’m not giving up on this’ that threaded his words. “You guys are new to the forest, I could show you around at least,” he suggested, “there’s not a lot of friendly faces around so the more you know the better, right?”

She could hear it in his words. The determination seemed to wrap around every syllable. Kate looked the tom in the eyes, studying them for a few moments. Silence hung between them as he finished off his last reach out. Finally she gave a heavy sigh, her shoulders seemed to relax a little and she found herself rolling her eyes. This fool isn't going to give up, and I have to live in the same group as him. What a thorn in my paw. "Fine, whatever. You can get me food, I guess I'll have no choice but to listen to you." She didn't add in,If I want to eat tonight that is... It was true, Kate didn't know the forest around here. Hunting was not easy, and her main skills relied on her father so far. She was still young, so was still learning.

He gave her a large smile as she relented. At least he had a chance, he thought, as he gave her a nod. While he wasn't the best hunter either, years of being the one putting food on the table had given him an advantage so far. "There's better hunting by the pond," he offered, "especially this time of the year. The water levels are lower so there are more places for them to hide."
Hywel gestured for her to follow as he moved forward, ears perked and eyes ahead. "So what do you think of the League so far?"

His smile made her paws itch. She'd perhaps given him too much hope. Kate had no plans to get to know her so called 'uncle'. As she had said before, she didn't have any family outside of her litter and her father. Even then, her father was treading on thin ice with her at the moment. The feline huffed and followed behind him.
As he spoke, she felt an inward groan happen, though tried to stifle it. She ought to known she was not going to get out of this without having to chat with him.
"Don't know much about it." She responded, not leaving much room open to continue the conversation from her own reply.

He nodded. That made sense. As much as Kate didn't seem to want to talk, Hywel wasn't the type to let go so easily. He had dealt with her mother's tantrums too when she was a kit. That was at least something similar between the two. They threw the same type of temper tantrums whenever they didn't want to talk.
"Well you must be excited to learn everything then," he mused, "Kier told me you guys were living at a barn before this and you traveled a long way; it must be different, to go from having just your family to a group like this. You finally have other cats around your age to hang out with other than your brothers. Have you met any of them yet?"

Kate pressed her lips together suddenly in thought. How much had Kier spoken to this cat? It seemed he may have given more information than she ever would have. Sure, this cat was supposed to be their uncle but... Kate didn't trust him. Why should she? Just because he was supposed to be her blood? Blood is thicker than water. It was something she had heard cats around her say in Primal Instinct. It seemed these cats took pride in their bloodlines, but Kate felt much different.
"No." She'd never even spoken to another cat in the league, other than Rhiannon and now Hywel. She actually stayed to herself mostly. It would be a miracle to get her out of her shell.

Hywel didn't seem bothered at all by her short, snappy replies. If she wasn't going to speak, then surely he'd fill the empty space until she did. "You should try and get to know them," he suggested with a smile, "it's good to get some perspective especially in a new place. My mother always said that if you're nice first, they'll believe it until they don't, but if you're mean at first, they'll never fall for your kindness. Pretty good words to live by, to be honest. Do you miss your old home?"

"Hmph." She responded. Kate did miss home, a lot. She'd much rather be back in the barn, chasing mice, and listening to her father's instructions and stories. It was warmer there, too. The hay seemed to hold heat better than the dens here, which felt cold and empty most times to her. Her eyes shifted towards him, and she found herself rolling her shoulders in a light shrug.
He was so persistent. It was annoying, yet also made her want to talk, too. How frustrating... Kate huffed loudly, and rudely. "Not much to tell, you basically know enough about me, don't you?" Kate wasn't that complex, and she was still young, so she had little to no history out here in the world as it was. "What about you? Do you have anything cool [dark]about you then?"

His brow furrowed and he fought the urge to scold her like a kit. Gods, did all of them inherit their mother's temper? Irritation flashed across his eyes for a brief moment, narrowed into an expression that was hard to read, before they calmed into an even expression once more. "You know that question would be easier to answer if you were being more specific," he pointed out with a frown, "how about this. You ask me a question and if I answer it, you answer my next one truthfully. How about that?"

Trade for a trade. She thought. He was smart, figuring out how to work her to his own liking. She'd allow it. For now. Not that she really had to answer any of his questions. It was her choice, and she was running the show. She liked to think, anyways.

"All right," Hywel affirmed with a faint smile, "you can start first, if you'd like." She seemed like the kind of cat who wanted to have the upper hand, after all.
