sunny needs frens!!!
It had been almost a week since the NightClan cats had taken over the clan, and Sunpaw found herself drifting farther and farther away from camp whenever possible. It scared her, what these cats could do to her; the fact that her adopted father was still injured from the battle made Sunpaw even more wary. For once, she felt so...helpless. She was still but a child, or at least she felt like it. There was nothing she could really do other than to duck her head down and keep to herself, which was what she was doing against everything she usually was.
Finding herself by the sea, she let out a sigh. She had never been much of a swimmer, but here, the waves drowned out any noise and it seemed as if the NightClan cats had no interest looking out here at all. Here, she stood, looking out to the sea, as the breezes brushed over her long fur, absorbed in her own thoughts and unaware of another cat nearby.
Most NightClan cats evaded the endless sea, but he considered himself SummerClan now, and it was only proper that he learned every piece of his new territory. He needed to know every subject within his lands as well, so when he spotted the apprentice sitting before the water, the decision to abandon his hunt was easy.
The blue tom padded up to Sunpaw's side and sat down beside her, looking past her at the swelling waters. It was loud, but Stormstar cleared his throat and called over the waves: "Are we looking for something in particular?"

The young apprentice didn't recognize the voice, and at first, she simply looked up, curious to see who it was, when her eyes spotted the grey fur and the sharp blue eyes and gods, she knew this cat or at least recognized him and suddenly she leaped up, her fur standing on its end, her hazel eyes wide and full of trepidation.
"I-uh-I–" she stammered, taking a step back, "wh-what are you doing here?" She glanced around, as if ready to see a bunch more NightClan cats trying to invade or drag her back to camp like that first night, and gods, she wished she was better at swimming right now because surely she would've raced to the water but she wasn't. "I...what are you doing here?" she asked, grimacing, "am I in trouble?"
Stormstar was growing tired of meeting new SummerClan cats. It should be delightful, but at some point, their glares cutting into his coat became a mild annoyance; they ought to just move on and accept their new lives, but instead, they wasted their energy on hatred. This one was overcome by more fear than anger, but that wasn't really an improvement; he still had to hold his tongue and patiently get through her shock before they could have a real conversation.
"You can sit down, Sunpaw, you're not in any trouble," the leader replied lightly. He pat the ground beside him with his tail, welcoming. "I just wanted to look at the sea. I've never seen so much water in one place before, not like this. How does it taste? Clear as lakewater?"

Frankly, she was surprised he even knew her name. Despite his title, she couldn't imagine this cat, this stranger as her new leader. Sunpaw was a cat who adapted to change; after all, she had lived with two different 'fathers' before she had settled with Howlingheart, and it should've been easy but frankly, the shock of being dragged back into camp during the invasion, and the sight of Phantomfox almost murdering Rosethorn in front of her had been...a lot to take in.
Her hazel eyes were still wide with trepidation as she scooted back into an ungraceful sit, still keeping her distance just in case, like a schoolchild being confronted by a principal. She probably would've kept silent too, but the moment Stormstar had mentioned tasting the water, her face twisted into a grimace.
"It tastes disgusting," she announced immediately, wrinkling her nose. She was never the kind of cat who knew how to keep her mouth shut, after all, her innocent naivete seemed to still cling onto her, despite being one of the older apprentices already, "it tastes like...it tastes like...salty and if you drink it, you'll throw up."
Stormstar had taken care to learn the names of his clanmates, sometimes sitting down with SummerClan cats and reminding patiently at their side until they have named every cat in the camp for him. He had little interest in the Garden Keepers and let their names pass through his mind, but the clan's pawful of warriors apprentices was worth remembering. Once, he had gotten along with the apprentices of his group better than their stuck-up mentors; time would tell if that was still true.
"That's a shame," he sighed, frowning down at the water. So much water at their paws should be an asset for the clan, but if it was undrinkable, the sea was far less valuable. "What about the fish that swim within? Are they just as salty? Don't tell me you've lived here so long without tasting one."

She had forgotten herself in that moment of disgust, and now that she was aware that he was once again speaking to her, she felt her cheeks warm up in embarrassment, suddenly feeling shy again. It was hard to remember this was a NightClan cat when he was trying to be friendly, if she was to be honest.
"Not really," she admitted, looking at her paws, "I can't really swim so..."
Stormstar stared at her in surprise. She couldn't swim? Wasn't that basic warrior training? He was never given the chance to be a mentor in NightClan, he had become a loyal guard only to qualify to become leader, but he realized now that perhaps it wasn't standard after all. The Regime had not trained their cats to swim, because any flooding within the tunnels was near certain to be fatal regardless of their ability. Perhaps down here, where the water held little interest to the clans, they saw no purpose either.
"I learned how to swim when I was much younger than you are now," he told her. "Our den was right beside a still lake. My mother feared we would drown, so one day she took us all down to the edge of the water. She told us what to do, then one by one she carried us out in the water and left us there to swim back on our own." Stormstar chuckled. "It was a tricky way to learn, but it worked. I've never forgotten."

Was that where NightClan's camp was? She had been curious, and well, not only for her own benefit these days. Anything she knew about the NightClan cats would...help them, right? "NightClan's camp is next to water?" she asked, blinking in surprise, "I always thought you'd be in some weird, dark–"
She immediately closed her mouth, panic written on her face. Had she said too much? She didn't intend on insulting their home, but it wasn't like they had a great impression of what NightClan was like. Why else would they invade SummerClan's beautiful territory if they weren't jealous?
"Oh, you're not wrong," Stormstar assured her with a chuckle. "NightClan's camp is a dark and stuffy old cave full of bad memories. The only one that hated it more than me was Nyra; that's the only reason I'm fond of the camp now." Sunpaw was too young to recognize the name of Flamingstar's pet, but the bitterness in his tone was apparent. There had been no shortage of ill will between the two of them, but he had done his best to put it aside for the leader's sake. All that effort had gone to waste when she was chased out of the clan.
He glanced down at her, guessing she might be confused and backtracked. "I wasn't born in NightClan. I've only lived recently."

She frowned at that. "Then why do they stay there?" she wrinkled her nose, thinking out loud, "why don't they just move somewhere nicer anyway?" She was confused about what 'Nyra' was but that was probably a question for later. Her ears perked up in curiosity as he mentioned that he wasn't born in NightClan either.
"Is nobody born in NightClan?" she asked, confused. She wasn't one to talk either; she wasn't a born SummerClan cat, having found her way here as a kit. "I feel like everyone I've met in NightClan isn't born there...and if you're not from there, why are you there anyway? Why would you join a bunch of mangy stu–"
