The cold chill was beginning to set once more in the frigid landscape of the mountain WinterClan dwelled on. Sinkingsaturn's fur had never been the longest. Her father might've had a thick, heavy pelt, but it was her mother's that she had inherited, and sitting here above a cliff, staring down at the view below as the pale blue sky turned a little gold with the sun's rise, she felt herself shiver involuntarily at the cold breeze that seemed to cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. A few more moments were spent pondering at the edge of the world, before getting up, and turning around, heading back to the camp.
She dreaded heading home. Even now, her 'husband' and her barely spoke. There was an awkward, stony silence whenever she returned, and she had yet to budge her stubborn mind about even attempting at a relationship with the tom. WinterClan felt...lonely. She didn't have many she'd call friends, only acquaintances here and there. A sigh left her mouth, a little too loud because with that, a rabbit's head looked up, stared at her, before immediately darting off.

"You're going to freeze out here with a pelt like that," Indigocrown's pelt may have been short but it was thick, hardy, and made for the winterclan cold through many generations. "Judging by the sounds of things, you would rather be here than somewhere else," She admittedly was curious but wasn't going to pry into the she-cats business, it wasn't that interesting or useful for either of them.
The heir stopped a foot short of the warrior and motioned with her head to follow, "Come on, I know a good way to warm up," It would make them both useful too which tended to be one of her top priorities. Loyalty was her first duty.

Sinkingsaturn raised a brow at the intruding voice; her resting face always looked annoyed enough to keep most cats at bay, but she supposed some cats would always find her a little less intimidating than she pretended to come across as. "How could you tell?" she replied dryly, though less cruel and biting than the wind currently was. The she-cat was known to have a bit of a temper and a tongue that could whip forty lashes less one. Her cold calm was like the eye of a storm, her frosted eyes stared back at Indigocrown.
"My mother survived out here with a shorter pelt than mine," she snorted, "even thrived in this frozen wasteland. I think I'll be fine." She peered at the heir, her brow still furrowed, "your pelt is hardly longer than mine, you know."

The she-cat's temper barely swayed Indigocrown. Her world was filled with ill-tempered cats both young and old. She wasn't much better herself in all honesty. "It may not be much longer, but mine is thicker. My family has survived Winterclan's harsh climate for many generations." She had inherited her grandfather's short but think grizzled tan pelt and long pointed ears.
"Fine, freeze out here. It is surely none of my business." Her response was sharp and dry. "Maybe I was feeling a bit soft this morning."

Amusement flashed across her gaze, but it was a dark one, full of sarcasm and biting, blue eyes narrowed into almond shapes for a brief moment before returning to their rounder shape as if nothing had happened. Cats in WinterClan cared so much about their generations of heritage and there was rarely a moment to forget it.
"My brothers had my father's coat," she finally spoke with a shrug, "but I don't know how my mother ever survived in these mountains, and I guess I drew the short straw."
With a sigh, she stood, as if contemplating the other cat's words. Her sharp response wasn't something that garnered a reaction from Sinkingsaturn; she much preferred cats with a bite. They were more real than the ones who only spoke in simpering smiles and enthusiasm that didn't reach their eyes. "Are you heading back to camp?" she asked with a frown, "if you're not, I'll join you."

She tipped her head at the warriors sudden interest in moving away from camp but didn't question it. There was surely a reason she didn't want to go home and Indigocrown understood that to a degree. There was a time when she'd been like that as well and even now she had cats to avoid, it had been seasons since she'd spoken to her own littermate.
"No, I'd rather stay out and about for a bit," too much business and politics awaiting me, she though but left it at that. No one needed to know she was procrastinating for a few hours. "I was going to do a little patrolling on my own, I heard some reports about bear scent down by the falls. I'm not going to be a fool and chase bears but I do want to see for myself."

She wouldn’t be all too surprised if Indigocrown had realized the reason for her reluctance; she knew the gossip around camp about her and her husband. Regardless, she found herself grateful for the other cat’s tact; at least for now, she was glad she wasn’t around the other gossips in town.
“Bear tracks?” she echoed curiously. She hadn’t seen a bear in ages. She had heard stories about how vicious those creatures could be, and had seen a glimpse of one when she had been an apprentice, but that was it. Her own curiosity was piqued. “Which direction?” she asked, her blue eyes turned towards the view they had from this point, “we should stay out of sight if we’re following a bear.”

"Bear tracks." It was a confirmation and she swung in the direction of the falls. "It's supposed to be just east of the falls, so we will stay downwind and out of sight." The warrior was correct, they didn't need to be seen by any bears. To a bear, cats their size could be a lunch snack or just a fun toy depending on their mood. Not how Indigocrown wanted to go out.
"Have you scouted for bears before?" They were uncommon so most cats never had to deal with them if they were fortunate.

She blinked, pondering over Indigocrown's words before nodding. She had never really seen a bear up close, but she knew what they were like from the stories the queens used to tell, of the fearsome beasts who stood ten times their size, so tall they seemed like monsters. Bears didn't often make their home around these parts but once they did...she didn't want to think about it.
"I saw one once with my mother," she spoke finally, "but...never really one up close. It was a long time ago, back when..." Back when her parents were still together. Back when her mother was still here, still alive, and her family was still together.
She shook her head, giving Indigocrown a faint smile. "It was a long time ago," she spoke, trying to change the topic now, "have you?"

(My toxic trait is using recent threads instead of saved threads xD this is why I lose stuff)
She nodded slowly, sensing the she-cats apprehension over the subject. A wise cat was apprehensive and feared the ginormous creatures. Bears were not to be messed with lightly, especially one that had kits in during the warmer seasons. They usually wandered down the mountain in search for warmth and meals but were occasionally found on Winterclan's territory. One of the risks of having caves after all.
"Once, when I was a very young warrior. It was maybe a fortnight after my naming ceremony and I had a scrape with a very young bear, still just a kit really. It still had long sharp talons and a deadly bite but the three of us fended it off. I have one of it's claws as a trophy." One of her fancier garments was four bracelets lined with claws from both prey and predator alike. Some preferred roses, ivy, crystals, feathers, capes, crowns, but she preferred to show off her prowess as a warrior. Indigocrown was not old by any means, but she was certainly not a young warrior either. She stood at five full winters on her lifetime and this would be her sixth.
She smiled a little sadly at the memory. Those had been the days when she had nothing to worry about. Her and her brother were thick as thieves, her mother was still alive and proud winterclan warrior. Now the memories of those days had a thick veil pulled tight over them. They were painful memories that filled her with longing and weakness. The grizzled she-cats gaze hardened.
"If there is a bear, I want to make sure it doesn't settle here."

"Do you?" Sinkingsaturn spoke, curiosity lighting her eyes at the vision the other cat painted. Fighting a bear, that must've been intense. She had always kept away from danger. It was her older brothers, her father too that had raced towards it, while she waited in pensive thought like her mother. "I was always told to avoid them, that it'd be a suicide mission to engage with a bear, even with backup."
She was curious too, what the bear claw must look like. She turned to ask another question, but the look on Indigocrown's face was one Sinkingsaturn recognized. It was a face she often wore on her own face when thinking of her family. It meant no questions. It meant there was a pain within a memory, bittersweet. It meant a vulnerability that needed to be protected.
Instead, she nodded. "All right," she spoke, sweeping her tail from left to right, "you'll have to tell me what to do though. I've never fought off a bear."

She laughed at that, "You're right that fighting a bear is a suicide mission. One I don't intend to embark on. If anything we might scare it from a great height or scope out it's den so it can be blocked off when they wander away. The only reason I walked away from that bear when I was young was because it was still a kit and relied on its mother. Bear kits are still dangerous but they do not have the training or knowledge to defend themselves the way adults do. We were backed into a corner and it was our only option." She paused, thinking of the claw stored carefully inside her den,
"For a kit, their claws are still huge though. If it had been the mother we surely would have died." In the following days she had run the scenario many times over in her head and there was no way to take down a creature that size. Not even with a whole clan and the casualties certainly wouldn't be worth it.
Her eyes swept over the warrior before turning back to their path, they were almost there. "We always stay downwind. Don't let it see you. If you see a big cave don't go in there, that's probably a den." She felt a little silly explaining this as if Sinkingsaturn were an apprentice but it was all important information if they wanted to leave their alive and with all their fur intact. If they were lucky there wouldn't be any kind of creature. It would be uneventful and they could just go home and have a nice nap or something.

Sinkingsaturn nodded, listening intently to her story. Even a bear cub surely would be difficult to chase away, she thought dryly. She didn't plan on becoming anyone's dinner tonight, that was for sure. Even if they could smell the bear a mile away, it'd be a dangerous mission to embark on. It was funny how a creature so large still managed to escape notice at times. Her eyes darted all around them, from the ferns laden with frost, to the bare branches of the trees above.
Her eyes were more alert now, the frosty blues scanning the path, aware of the way the snow crunched underneath her paws. She had no intention of exploring empty caves on her own, thank you very much, but still, she nodded along to her words as they continued. "When we're closer, should we find a higher perch?" she asked, "just to see what we're working with?"
