He never thought he would come crawling back here, not after the altogether unpleasant experience that had nearly killed him. He was lucky to escape that day with his life; if the snake hadn't done him in, the hostile cats that roamed this land might have shredded him, especially after his crass behavior and eagerness to leave. See you never, he'd thought that day as he slipped out of their territory and headed for the hills.
But here he was, wrangling half a plan and fueled by desperation.
Sootstep slunk on his belly. He crept through the meadow with his head low, eyes scanning the dark rocks for any snakes that might be lurking beneath. It was just after dawn, the sun risen from behind the horizon but not yet high in the sky. Stormstar had the clan on a night schedule, forcing them to keep to his clan's tradition; after a long night of arguments and patrols, Sootstep had slipped out of the den and dragged his paws back to SunClan. He was exhausted, but it didn't show: every hair on his pelt was quivering with nerves. NightClan's main territory was too close for comfort, even if they ought to be sleeping by now.
He just had to hope if SunClan came, it was the same stranger he had seen here once before.
Half a plan, half a gamble: he had to hope it wasn't a coincidence that last time Tinymutiny lurked around these snake-infested stones the same time he had.

Night had fallen over SunClan's territory, and most of the clan was tucked away in their nests. The cats of SunClan rose with the sun, and slept with the sun. Only a few scarce patrols to stop invaders were sent out after darkness had fell. A slow mist wove through the trees, everything eerily quiet and still.
"Get OUT" a low growl rolled through the trees along NightClan's border
Sootstep wouldn't be able to see Tinymutiny through the thick fog, but he would be able to hear the sound of her her feet as she ran through the leaf litter. Only the footsteps were getting louder and louder with no sign of stopping. Tinymutiny burst through the mist, headed straight for him with claws unsheathed and fangs bared. Using her powerful backlegs, she launched herself
Only instead of landing on Sootstep she soared over him. Landing on the other side neatly as she slashed at a rolling wave of mist "FIRST you take him from me, and now you come for our KITS?" she slashed through the air, hitting nothing but fog "I WONT let you take them" the hair along her spine was raised, as if fighting against some unseen enemy "Stop being a coward, and come fight me"
His neck fur ruffled as he heard a familiar growl, and Sootstep tensed as she launched herself out of the mist. He leaped backward out of her path, prepared to defend himself with his tongue first, but to his surprise, she wasn't attacking him at all. Sootstep turned to watch her attack the mist, all of his senses assuring him there was nothing there to be wary of, not even a mouse.
"Tinymutiny?" he ventured. He hesitated. Whatever she was doing, this was his chance to finish his task unnoticed... but it would go smoother with her at his side. Maybe he really was losing his nerve.
The dark gray warrior headed to her side and stood next to her, carefully keeping her out of reach. He didn't want to catch the next blow. "There's no one here, Tinymutiny. You're safe." He eyed her, then lunged, shoving her backward and away from the fog. "You're safe," he repeated. "Stand down."

The silver she-cat snarled lunging at the mist, the tom's presence not even registering until she was pushed away from her target. Landing firmly in a sitting position, her eyes clouded over and misty. She almost launched herself Sootstep in her confusion, but his voice gave her enough reason to pause. Her gaze slowly coming into focus and landing on him. She blinked slowly before darting forward and rolling him away from this mist
"Are you mouse-brained? Don't touch it" she growled, hackles still raised as she looked up at the mist with a suspicious gaze "I know you have a death wish, but if you let it the mist take you your soul will be trapped' as the mist began to cross back over the border she slowly let the tom to his feet "It won't take another soul, not so long as I have something to say about it"
Sootstep growled as she tackled him-- he thought she was coming out of it and let his guard down, but her swift attack proved him wrong. He didn't want to hurt her, not when she was confused and he was trespassing in her territory, but instinct unsheathed his claws. He shoved her away and scrambled back to his paws, eyeing her suspiciously as she went on.
Did he have a death wish? The comment surprised him more than the nonsense about the fog. Was that why he had come here today, to die? He knew his task was risky, it could kill him, but he was desperate; he wasn't hoping to die, though. Sootstep frowned but pushed the puzzle out of mind for now.
"Right, if you say so," he replied, deciding he would rather not chance the carnivorous mist. SunClan cats sure had strange beliefs. "So you're just here to guard the mist? How do you stop mist if it decides to take someone's soul? What about yours?"

The silver she-cat didn't follow this time, now that they were out of the mist and it was retreating "No I'm here to find the thing in the mist" she growled, but now that the mist was off of their territory she was slowly starting to relax thought her eyes kept flittering back to the border. She closed her eyes "The thing that took Oakshade from me. Perhaps I can't stop it, but I won't stop fighting for him'
"But that doesn't explain what you are doing out here. Not to hunt snakes I hope. You are rather terrible at it" referring to their last encounter when she didn't just save him once, but twice.
Who was Oakshade? His confusion only grew as she went on. He must have been important to have broken her like this; Sootstep wondered what had actually happened to him.
"Actually, that is why I'm here," he replied with a half-hearted grin, feeling stupid now that he said the words out loud. A stupid plan, but the best he had. "I'm looking for a live one. Is your Oakshade still alive?" Maybe he should have more tact, but he was curious. If she was still fighting for him, she must know he was still out there.

Tinymutiny gave the tom a well aimed slap to the shoulder with sheathed claws, meant to be more a chastisement than an attack "Have it your way Deathwish, but you you could have just asked for help" she rose to her paws her tail flicking over the shoulder she had just hit more gently "But I suppose it could be worse, rattlesnakes are far from the most dangerous thing that you can encounter out here" but at the mention of Oakshade she seemed to pale and withdraw, "Oakshade is dead" she replied coldly "He was taken from me, and now his soul can't find peace so long as it's held by that thing in the mist...."
Sootstep shook his head as she hit him, but this time he didn't dodge; he knew he deserved it. "Well, I was going to ask you for help if I found you," he admitted beneath his breath, reconsidering that step of the plan now. If she wasn't entirely sane he didn't want to risk her life chasing after dangerous predators. He'd find a way to wrangle the snakes himself.
He hesitated as she withdrew, feeling he should apologize or comfort her. It was a strange emotion; Sootstep rarely comforted cats, especially not strangers. But then, normally their coldness was directed toward him out of some misguided anger, not because he was being invasive. "Maybe it will go away when the sun rises," he suggested. Mist often melted off of SummerClan territory under the heat of the day.

Tinymutiny chuckled, the small laugh turning into almost a roar the longer it continued "If it only it was that easy"
The silver she-cat looked out over the forest, before looking back at Sootstep "Why do you want a snake any way? This isn't even the right area to be hunting them" she blinked, "any why alive? Much easier to transport them dead" The whole thing didn't make a lot of sense, but a lot of things didn't make sense lately. How a soul could be held captive where even the Sun God and StarClan couldn't reach...
Her words sent a shiver down his spine, and he was not sure why.
He shifted as she questioned his plan, acutely aware of its poor construction. Sootstep was glad to turn his mind from their strange mists, but this was a delicate topic. "I need to kill someone," he replied. He meant to say it confidently, but his tone faltered; he couldn't hide his disgust and apprehension. "It needs to be done quietly, and I'll never get close enough to even try and fight. This is the only way."

Tinymutiny blinked "Kill someone?"
She muttered something under her breathe "and you think coming out here to get a snake is the best way to go about that?" She gave a little tisk "and they say that I have lost my mind. We have met once before, and you come here asking me to help you kill someone?" This whole situation was rather strange "You must be rather desperate, coming to a near stranger for assistance. Do tell me, whom is it that you seek to kill?"
"Believe me, I'm not thrilled about my plan either," Sootstep replied curtly. He was hesitant to go on. She was a SunClan cat, and he had no doubt she would weaponize any weaknesses he admitted about his clan. They couldn't afford a SunClan invasion right now; that would be even worse than Aspenstar's reign of terror. But Sootstep knew he had to trust her if he wanted her aid, and it would become public knowledge soon if it wasn't already.
"I want to kill Stormstar," he said finally. "He's taken over leadership of SummerClan, and someone needs to take him out before he destroys us. I've put up with bad leaders before, and I'm done with it. He's gone too far. We can't argue him out of power, we need to kill him. Aspenstar is still his superior; she might let him take a leader's name, but she wouldn't let him get nine lives, right? We kill him now before he has the chance."

Tinymuitny shook her head from one side to the other "Ok lets say you manage to kill this Stormstar. THen what?"
She let silence fall over them for a few moments "You said Aspenstar put him in charge? It means is nothing more than an underling, easily replaced. The next cat she places in charge might be even worse. Do you plan on killing them to?" her gaze narrowed in on the gray tom, pointing out rather obvious loop holes in his logic. For as skewed as her own logic was, it allowed her to look at situations in a much different light "It would be the same as walking into snake pit and killing one, while still surrounded by hundreds. It will only serve to distract you from the situation at hand and make you more vulnerable"
"Violence leads to more violence. Are you ready to deal with consequences when cats come seeking revenge for his death?"
"I know it's a terrible plan," Sootstep muttered defensively, but he took a deep breath and forced himself to really think about what she had to say. If he was going to ask her for help, he needed to accept what she offered, even if it wasn't the support he wanted.
"When Stormstar dies, it will give the clan a chance to revolt. Stormstar is naive; he only keeps a few NightClan cats around, and he spreads out his forces. No SummerClan patrol is allowed to leave without a NightClan escort. If Stormstar dies, those patrols can turn on their escort and drive them out. We can take control of our clan back before Aspenstar has time to send in reinforcements, we can find our new leader and we can take control of our lives, and face her in a proper battle."
Sootstep looked at her, a quiet, helpless acceptance in his eyes. "I don't consider murder lightly. I know that killing Stormstar will mean I can never be the leader of SummerClan; I know Aspenstar will hunt me down and kill me for my crimes. But at least I'll die knowing I defended my clan."

"That is the most mouse-brained plan I have ever heard of Deathwish. Any one of my kits could have come up with something more clever"
Tinymutiny raised a paw to her face rubbing her forehead gently "You are making a lot assumptions and taking a large risk for very little reward. If that is your plan I might as well just end your suffering here and now, and save you the effort. It would be far less messy and painful" she took in a deep breathe "Your plan has so many problems that a badger could jump threw those holes. Lets just start with your plan for killing him itself. Even if you managed to somehow capture a snake and transport it all the way back to SummerClan without it killing you on the journey, what would you do next? Put it in his den? Waltz straight into camp holding a venomous creature that will rattle and make a whole lot of noise and place it there? Surely that wouldn't catch the eye of the NightClan invaders. Or perhaps you were going to put it on the territory where it could just slither off and injure someone else. One of the clan-mates that you claim to care for? A family member? Even if you somehow managed to get the snake and Stormstar in the same vicinity, what are the chances that it will actually bite the correct target? You are talking about a living breathing animal that has a mind of its own"
"No, no, that I planned out," Sootstep insisted. "I want the snake to alive, but I'll knock it out. I'll look like I'm bringing prey in and then I can just sneak it into his den from there and wrap it up in his nest. When he goes to sleep, he'll wake it up and it'll bite him. It's a snake, it won't bite anyone else unless they come into the den, so I'll stand guard outside and keep them away."
He paused, then, thinking through her words again.
"... Slither off? Wait, how fast do these things move?"
Sootstep was imagining a fish or perhaps a sunflower, contained to the area it had been placed in; the snake could flop around and strike, but it couldn't escape to the rest of camp, right?

"Fast enough that you couldn't dodge it" she snorted
This whole thing was utterly ridiculous "1.Snakes don't get knocked out quite that easily.... 2.Snakes can bite even while unoncious and would never stay that way all the way to summerclan. 3.Your going to just stand guard outside of then den? Why don't you just shout to the rest of the clan what your plan is. It would be just as effective"
