Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Havenspark eyed the river with apprehension as she drew near. The water was still swollen and choked with debris, and she dreaded the thought of trying to get a drink from the muddy depths, but she was desperately thirsty. She'd been hunting all day with nothing to show for it. Gingerly she padded close to the banks and leaned in, lapping at the surface of the water. Then she saw it - the glinting scales of a fish, pinned to the bottom of the river just in front of her by a large branch. Her heart pounded. It was an easy catch if she could get down there.
The silver tabby leaned forward, took a deep breath, and plunged into the turbid waters.
Maskedknight had been having similarly poor luck as he'd gone hunting about. Most he found was already dead from the flash flooding that still left SpringClan's land soaked and more of a bog than anything.
His ears swiveled in the direction of Havenspark when he heard a splash, his head shooting up, abandoning the flooded mouse nest he'd been sniffing at. He hurried over to the source worried, as he knew cats had gotten lost in the flash flood and hadn't been found.
"Hello?!" He called in alarm and concern when he saw a silver tabby tail disappear under the water, the tom hurrying over skidding to a halt at the bank peering in nervously at the water.
Havenspark swam toward the bottom, grimacing at the strong tug of the current on her fur. She knew it would be difficult, but the branch was large enough to protect her from the worst flow. When she reached the fish, she locked her forepaws around its head and tugged, claws sliding in between its gill rakers for a better grip as she heaved upward. It wiggled but didn't budge.
Running out of breath, she dove forward and caught it in her jaws, and this time she was strong enough to yank the fish free. Havenspark swam toward the surface, unaware of the stuck branch now flexing in the water, unstable now that the fish was gone. Her silver head popped up on the surface and she gasped for breath, grinning at Maskedknight.
"H---"
The branch swung free of the mud and slammed straight into the she-cat. Havenspark barely had time to shriek before she was forced under the water again and the river started to drag her away.
Maskedknight let out a small breath of relief when Havenspark surfaced a fish clasped in her jaws revealing that it was just a clanmate hunting.
He was about to urge her out of the water, Jetstar had made it clear that no one was to go in the water under any circumstances-
But the words died on his tongue as the branch below the surface of the water swung free and struck Havenspark sending her under the water.
"Havenspark!" He cried eyes widening as he leapt to his paws and ran after her slipping along before finding his footing to give chase. "Try to get your head back above the water!"
There was no way he could jump in after her. They'd both just get carried away.
He looked around wildly for anything ahead he could use to maybe stand on to get him closer to her. He spotted a branch that hung over the surface of the water. It looked a little sus, but it was Maskedknight's best bet so he sped up to get to it.
The strike sent her tumbling nose over tail and for a moment of pure terror, Havenspark did not know which way to swim to reach the surface again. The fish had been knocked loose of her grip and she looked down to find it was bobbing on the surface of the water, thrown around by the waves. She struck out toward the surface and emerged, gasping air again. Her respite was not long, but this time she kept close to the surface, thrashing as the waves battered her.
A tiny voice at the back of Havenspark's brain told her to be rational, to tell the warrior to leave her to die. It was too dangerous for him to help, and she had made a mistake.
But much louder was her own voice, screaming "HELP!" at the top of her lungs.
"I'm trying!" Maskedknight shouted back as he darted to the side trying to find more solid ground to make running ahead easier, fortunately closer to the trees the ground was less boggy allowing him to run faster.
He sprinted for the tree, climbing up as fast as he could before going out on the branch.
The branch swayed underneath him making him a little nervous, but it held under his weight.
Shifting his position on the branch he reached a paw down towards the surface. "Grab my paw!" He cried claws digging into the bark below him as he leaned forward trying to get his head closer to the surface to potentially help grab her by the scruff of her neck.
She fought as hard as she could to buy him time, clinging to the debris around her with both paws and even kicking back upstream a bit. It was exhausting, but it was their only chance for her to get out, and she had to make sure he was in position. She wasn't strong enough to do this on her own. Havenspark was too eager to live to spend time hating herself for feeling that way; the loathing would come later.
By the time Havenspark slipped down to him, Maskedknight was reached out to save her. She kicked upward and grabbed onto him, sinking her claws into his arm and hauling herself up, grasping his chest with her other paw. It must hurt but she didn't care, she had to get out and just hope he had a strong enough grip he didn't fall in with her.
Maskedknight bit back a hiss as she dug into him but didn't protest, holding onto her in turn as he slowly, one paw after the other pulled her back onto the branch with him. The branch bending a little under their weight but not yielding.
Though Maskedknight took that as reason enough to keep backing up pulling Havenspark with him. Only slowing down when they got the thicker part of the branch, Maskedknight dragging her up to fully join him on it, panting from exertion.
She hung limply from him as the warrior struggled to find a place to pull her up, tail dangling over the tips of the frothy water as it nipped at her, taunting and lustful. The day she first said "I love you" quelled in comparison to the flood of relief and joy she felt when her paws were on solid ground again, balancing on the thicker branch.
"Thank you," Havenspark gasped to him, clutching the sturdy ground as she spat mouthfuls of water over the side. Her legs quivered. "Let's... let's get off of this thing." She inched toward him, trusting the warrior to lead the way. She risked once glance back at the water and found her fish was long gone.
Maskedknight nodded. "Yeah, let's." He said making his way to the trunk of the tree and clambering on down, letting out a sigh once he was back on solid ground. He glanced up stepping back a few steps to make sure Havenspark could get down safely.
Havenspark leaped after him. Her back legs buckled as they hit the ground and she found herself sitting heavily, a shudder racing down her spine. If she wasn't soaking wet, her fur would be on end.
"I lost my prey," she lamented, staring back at the churning river that had nearly stolen her life. "Do you think it will wash up downstream?"
