Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Cinderflower had been in love with Sunpetal since she had learned to walk. For a while it had been puppy love, then a deep crush, and now it felt as deep a part of her as anything. Not that the gray-furred Garden Keeper really understood what love was- she just knew that Sunpetal made her stomach tumbly and her feet light as petals in the breeze.
It had taken her a long time to work up the courage to confess her love. It felt like such a secret, treasured thing, and it was the one thing she hadn't admitted out loud- though it was pretty obvious to everyone. She had tried to confess it several times and chickened out at the last minute, scuffing her feet and going back to the Garden Keeper's den to mope.
Today was different. It was a beautiful day, if a little windy, and she was ready. She intercepted Sunpetal out in the wildflower meadows, bounding up to her cheerfully. "Hey, Sunpetal," she greeted her former mentor. "Whatcha up to?"
Conversely, Sunpetal was likely the only cat in SummerClan not in on Cinderflower's little secret - or, rather, she wasn't privy to just how deep the younger cat's worship of her went. She had always liked having her tag along and knew that if she ever needed a pick-me-up, Cinderflower would be right there to give it to her in the form of adoring compliments and dangerous boosts to her mounting ego. But who could blame her? Sunpetal was more surprised to encounter cats that weren't interested in her looks, with the same billowing cream fur, cinnamon accents, and bondi blue eyes as her mother, Poppymask, a notorious flirt.
Today, as her former apprentice approached her, her thick fur was being pulled in every direction by the breeze, giving her trouble in trying to tame the stray strands. "Hm?" She hmmed distractedly, barely appearing to even glance at the gray Garden Keeper. "What'd you say, Cinderflower? I can't hear you over the sound of THIS STUPID WIND," she snarled at it, like she could Intimidate it into submission, "MESSING WITH MY FUR."
Well this wasn't very romantic! Sunpetal couldn't even hear her well, and she'd hate to have to shout her confession over top of the wind. "I said WHATCHA UP TO?!" She repeated louder, watching the wind whip Sunpetal's admittedly very pretty fur back and forth. The setting was right, with the wildflowers around them and the sun beaming down warm rays on their shoulders. "YOU LOOK NICE TODAY!"
"THANKS, I'M GOING FOR A WINDSWEPT LOOK. IT'S THE NEW TREND!" Of course, she was certain Cinderflower was just telling her that, Sunpetal torn between resenting the lie while appreciating the effort. Another gust knocked her off her paws and into the other cat, pinning them into a very compromising position, their boses a breath apart. "Oh, uh," Sunpetal mumbled awkwardly, not super comfortable with unsolicited proximity, "Sorry, but you should have moved if you didn't wanna get squished. I can't control the wind you know." She went to step off.
"Wait! Don't go," Cinderflower said quickly, flushing. The setting was right, and she knew she couldn't wait any longer, but she didn't know what to say. How could she confess to something as big as this? How could she even find the words? "I-I don't mind it when you squish me." Starclan, she was stumbling over her words. Her cheeks warmed even further, and she found she couldn't meet Sunpetal's gaze like she normally did.
"I... well, I wanted to tell you something real quick. If it's not too much of a bother," Cinderflower said hoarsely, before clearing her throat a little too aggressively to get rid of the hoarseness. "It's something I've been thinking about for a while now."
Reluctantly, the pretty Garden Keeper didn't move, even though every individual tendon and sinew screamed at her to flee. Anything that started with There's something I've been wanting to tell you was never anything Sunpetal actually wanted to be involved in, but Cinderflower's big, round, shimmering puppy dog eyes compelled her to resist the call of escaping. "....Yes?"
"Well..." Cinderflower said, trying her best to gather all her courage. Now or never, she told herself. Sunpetal had to know. "I think you're so amazing, and strong, and free-spirited, and kind, and funny, and I really like being around you. I mean- well, I love you, Sunpetal. I think I always have." Now that the words were out, a weight was lifted from her shoulders- though her heart was still thudding out of control. "I want to be with you."
"Okay, so, all of those things are of course correct," she began slowly. She couldn't have seen this coming, completely shocked by Cinderflower's confession. Huh, who could have seen this coming? There had never been any signs at any point in their lives. She blinked, her gaze then narrowing in thought, whiskers shivering against the wind. A younger Sunpaw would have revolted immediately and leaped away, face twisted in disgust; but the older, more experienced Sunpetal was cognizant that other cats actually had feelings. She would have to tread this one lightly.
Sunpetal drew in a breath and allowed herself to gingerly step off of the younger Garden Keeper. "Listen, Cinderflower, I...appreciate the thought. I can't blame you for these feelings, because I am all of those things, but I'm not interested in settling down with anyone right now. I mean, the whole world could change tomorrow! I want to focus on myself and my future, not have to shoulder someone else's happiness before I've defined my own. I'm...sorry?" It didn't sound like she was sure if she was sorry, but she felt like she was, so she said it.
Cinderflower scrambled to her feet, nodding along as Sunpetal spoke. "Yeah! Yeah, definitely! You're right. You should... you should take time for you. I didn't mean to impose. I hope you find your happiness somewhere else." Her voice was bright, overly cheerful, but she couldn't stop the flood of tears that spilled from her amber eyes and landed on the crushed wildflowers underneath her. "I want you to be happy, Sunpetal. I just thought you should know, you know? Okay, great! Have a good rest of your day!"
With that the weeping Garden Keeper had departed, darting as fast as her legs would carry her into the safety of the forest.
"Hm," Sunpetal hmmed as she watched her run away, "That went well."
Confident that everything would just go right back to normal, as if Cinderflower hadn't confessed her love and got her heart thrown back in her face, she turned back to doing whatever it was she'd been doing before her day had been interrupted.
