Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Coming to FallClan had always been the best decision that Rivergale had ever made. He loved the mountain and the crisp air, the smell of the forest almost always edged with the sweet scent of leafrot and mushrooms. There was just something comforting about the land that he now called home. Plus, it had brought him to Acorncharm. But the one thing that the brown and white tabby hadn't felt secure in was his relationship with Hystericstar. They had exchanged words a few times here and there, the leader having been very welcoming when he first came to the Clan, but they had never spent much time together outside of that.
With a sudden burst of ambition, Rivergale knew what he needed to do. It was rather early, the weak morning sunlight just beginning to creep across the clearing. Taking a deep breath, he stopped at the entrance to the leaders den. "Hystericstar?" he called out, though kept his voice rather low.
Typically, the leader didn't get much sleep. It wasn't unusual for Hystericstar to pull an all-nighter working with his herbs, especially lately. With no deputy, and no full medicine cat, he was constantly being pulled into the duties of both roles. He had little time to himself lately, and he could feel the affect that it was having on his body. He was already weak enough, but it felt like his cough was getting worse with the stress. He had to find a way to cure it, sleep came second to that.
The previous night, he had taken a nap, so he wasn't entirely sleep deprived. In fact, it hadn't been that long since he woke up from it and stood in his den, frowning down at the meager amount of herbs at his paws. He would definitely need to put some time aside later to gather more tansy. Before he could decide when, the sound of his name met his ears. Rivergale? "What is it?" he called back, matching the tom's low tone. It was invitation enough to come in, if that's what Rivergale had wanted.
Pushing his way into the den, Rivergale dipped his head low in a greeting. He notices the herbs strewn about the den with a small frown. "I was wondering if you needed help with anything. I know with it just being you running things, it can probably get a bit overwhelming. Sparrowpaw has been doing good in his training, so I have some free time on my paws."
Hystericstar was almost shocked at the offer - after all, it didn't seem like many around him cared too much about taking on even more responsibilities, but Rivergale was one of his aurulents and this wasn't the first time that someone had come to him about this. If it had been anyone more annoying, he would have passed his tansy collecting task onto them, but Rivergale could definitely be of help elsewhere.
It was silent for a few moments as the leader contemplated, before nodding to himself. "Turning down help would be stupid of me at this point," he finally said, giving the aurulent one of his rather twisted grins. "Now, just how much work are you willing to do?"
Returning the grin, Rivergale gave and shrug and meowed, "Whatever you need, it'll get done. These paws are ready to work." He was happy for his leaders' faith in him, glad to be making a good impression. Rivergale loved FallClan, he wanted to make sure everything was taken care of for the upcoming leaf-fall and then leaf-bare.
"I'll make you regret those words," Hystericstar replied, though how truthful the statement was remained a mystery. He had no intention of overworking the tom, but he would make full use of his new volunteer. He took a moment to stretch, stifling a cough with the movement, before flicking his twig-like tail for Rivergale to follow as he left his den.
It was still a nice day out - or at least, to any other cat. With his small, hairless form, Hystericstar could easily feel the beginnings of a chill in the air. As he led the aurulent, he glanced at Rivergale. "Leaf-fall is starting soon, which means we'll be needing more hunting patrols sent out." Organizing patrols is supposed to be a deputy's job, which he was sure that Rivergale knew. He stopped walking near the fresh-kill pile, a small frown forming on his face as he took in how empty it seemed to be.
"Well," he coughed, narrowing his eyes. "This time of year, when both sunrise and sunset are the coldest, it's best to hunt when it's sunhigh. And what ever fishers we have should be down at the mouth of what rivers we have that are coming from the sea, salmon are spawning. I know fish don't keep, but it's a good meal when caught fresh."
Hystericstar couldn't help but be pleasantly surprised by Rivergale's knowledge. Having never undergone warrior training, Hystericstar didn't know all too much about the patterns of prey. All he knew was plants, but some idiot had decided that you didn't need to know anything to become leader. Honestly, he would never understand Cal's decision, but it was far too late to do anything about it now. Maybe he would have been better off dying of his cough that day that Cal had told him.
Throwing the thoughts out of his head, he raised a brow at the other tom. "You know much more than I do." He glanced up at the sky, then back at Rivergale. "I'm assuming you taught Sparrowpaw how to fish?"
A wry grin curled up the edges of the toms lips, giving his leader a small nod. "I've been wanting to try, I know not everyone is willing to get their paws wet. It's a good skill to have though, and the fish is mighty tasty." Rivergales eyes twinkled, wondering if he could convince his leader to try at paw at water hunting.
Slightly, the leader's head tilted in thought. While Hystericstar had no way of knowing that Rivergale had been thinking of getting him to fish, passing the skill on to others did sound like a good idea. "Would you be willing to teach others, then?" he asked. With how cold it got in the mountainous territory of FallClan, they likely wouldn't be able to eat fish year-round, but it was still a good idea to fill the fresh-kill pile.
