That moment when Jiang Cheng’s blacklisted by all the women in all the sects and has to take his spiritual weapon as his bride. Ouch.warped words of ‘simply meant to be’ flash on screen
Ziyuan was quite familiar with the rather stubborn as a mule and lack of filter personality her son had acquired over the seasons growing up. While her mate considered it to be ‘the rebellious nature of children’, Ziyuan knew this to be false. It was because of the mutt her mate allowed in their family; the black tom who was all smiles and mischief, not seeing how he was breaking their family. If she sat down and thought a moment, allowed her prejudice to fall away, she would realize that in her own twisted way she cared for Stygian just as much as her biological children, but the care and attention her mate doted on the mutt while neglecting her son and daughter was enough to keep that sentimentality locked up tight.
Due to his bull-headed personality and sharp, unforgiving tongue — traits she reluctantly admitted were passed on from her side — he hadn’t much luck in the romance department. If he wanted to spend the rest of his life alone, that was his prerogative, but she cared for her son too much to let him live his life without at least a friend. And, since he wasn’t capable of finding his own friends, she chose to do it for him. Even if her methods could be seen as… unethical, no one needed to know. No one did know.
The black she-cat padded toward her son with her chin held high, purple-blue eyes narrowed with the pride that came with believing oneself to be nobility.
“Riverpaw,” she greeted coolly, though there was a small smile on her lips, for she did love him, even if she didn’t always outright show it, “I have found you a friend.”
The charcoal bengal apprentice aged she-cat behind her, pelt accented with bright glowing white and stark blacks to contrast against the soft brown and gold patterned everywhere else, peeked out behind his mother and blinked curious purple eyes at him.

Unfortunately for both of the she-cats, Riverpaw was already in a sour mood. One of the she-cat he had been courting had suddenly decided to break things off with him. He didn't understand why, after all it had been her that was in the wrong. She-cats were supposed to be seen, not heard, when boys were talking business and she had been brazen enough to interject herself into their conversation. Not once, not twice, but three times. He had been calm about the whole thing, pulling her aside afterwards to remind of her of her place when she lost it on him. Giving him a hard slap across the face, and ended things. It was probably better that way, with that kind of an attitude she would never serve as suitable mate material. It just made it easier on him to end things, when he had the expectations of being a gentleman on his shoulders.
Riverpaw looked up from his grooming, to see the shy young cat looking out from behind his mother. It gave him a slight pause but nothing more "I appreciate that mother, but I am not interested. I have plenty of friends already, and just ended things with Blossompaw. So if this is another one of your schemes to find another she-cat for me, I think I will pass this time around" after all she had set him and Blossompaw up on their first date, and things had not gone over well in the end.
Ziyuan’s eyes became impossibly icy, an expression she usually reserved for her mate when he was being obstinate and not acknowledging the neglect he was treating his children with. “Riverpaw, you are the sole heir to this family.” She paused, thinking briefly over her next words. “If you do not wish to be arranged with a mate, I suppose I can accept that. You are still young, there’s plenty of time to find one on your own when you’re ready. But I will not accept my son living in this world without a guardian.”
Her tail flicked out and pushed the female apprentice forward, away from using her as a shield. “You may view her as a friend or as a deputy disciple, I care not. She is in your life now and was raised for the role of protecting and aiding you when needed.”
The she-cat’s eyes narrowed. “Unless you’d like to disappoint me again.” The glint in her eyes spoke of the volumes of consequences he would face in that case.

The young tom's maw opened to protest, but the look his mother gave him at then end quickly killed any words of complaint that he may have spoken before they even emerged.
His ears fell back, clearly feeling guilty for all the trouble and disappointment he had already caused his mother. He wasn't the best fighter. Nor the best hunter. He hadn't even succeed in securing a suitable mate. He couldn't really blame his mother for calling him out on his failures, though it didn't ease the ache in his heart. The ache of knowing that he was never going to be good enough. The he would never be able to make his parents truly proud of him.
"As you wish..." he replied after a moment of reluctance
Ziyuan nodded once, her steely gaze growing slightly soft once again. “Good. I’ll leave you two to get to know one another.” As she padded away, she shot her son a look that clearly said try.
The bengal she-cat left behind swallowed as she watched the tom’s mother pad away, glancing at the tom beside her. She didn’t get the feeling he was very open to the idea, if the interaction that happened in front of her was anything to go off of. She wanted desperately to comfort him, but wasn’t sure how or if he’d even welcome it. She didn’t want him to lash out at her.
“My name is Zidian.” She greeted with a small smile.

As soon as his mother was out of earshot, he let out a little sigh
"Zidian, I apologize for whatever my mother has put you through. She can be... difficult" the black and white tom rose to his paws, "You are are a she-cat, you should be out there searching for a mate and preparing to be a mother, not training to become a protector. I am fully capable of defending myself from any threats, so your services are not needed unfortunately. I will see to it that you are compensated for the time my mother has already taken away from you. Perhaps I can assist you in finding a mate? I know of several eligible bachelor's who would treat with dignity and respect. You are quite beautiful and seem like a nice enough girl, so I am sure they would be more than happy to meet you"
It hadn't even crossed his mind that this girl might be doing this of her own free will, much less that she wouldn't want to find a qualified mate.
Zidian’s shy demeanor seemed to flicker away with a smirk before settling back in place. “She told me you’d say something like that. She also told me she didn’t know why you think that way about females when she trained you when you were a boy to respect females and treat them equally.” She tilted her head. “I was hoping she’d be wrong, I’ve never met a tom who’s been so rude. But… it seems she was right after all.”
She sighed heavily and sat down.
“I would love nothing more than to find someone to love who’d love me for who I am and not who they want me to be. That’s not my purpose. I was trained from the time I could walk and eat solid prey that my purpose is to serve you as a guardian. Nothing more, nothing less. And considering your growing reputation… I’d say you’ll need it.”
She smiled sweetly at him. “You’re stuck with me.”

"Excuse me, miss" he replied with a bewildered look on his face
In what part of this conversation had he been rude? He had politely declined, complimented her, and even offered to help find her a suitable tom to settle down with. If anything, he had gone above and beyond what was expected of him as a gentleman "I have already made my intentions clear. I do not need your services" he offered her a firm, but gentle smile while rising to his paws
"My mind will not be swayed. So run along, I have important matters to attend to, and it wouldn't be proper to bring a lady along"
"Then stop considering me a lady." She spoke as though the answer was obvious and he was too blind to see it right in front of his face. "I am a training warrior, first and foremost, and not defined by my gender. If it makes you so uncomfortable, you're free to simply ignore my gender at all, and consider me a presence at your side."
She hummed, rolling her head from side to side to pop her neck.
"I'm not leaving, so whatever method you choose to make yourself feel more comfortable, have at it."

Riverpaw shook his head "Absolutely not, miss Zidian"
The black and white tom stood, "You are a she-cat, and I am a tom. You should be safely tucked away in your nest, so please return to your den. I won't tell my mother, if that is what you are worried about" Suddenly the apprentice dashed off, hoping that she would be caught off guard and just give up on the chase.
Zidian sighed, raising a paw and licking at the back before swiping it over an ear. Now she understood why she was warned that the tom was truly exhausting to deal with. The bengal shook her head and stood slowly, padding after him and taking her time. She knew how to track; she had been trained since the day after she’d been found by Madame Ziyuan. He could run, but he could never hide.

Riverpaw slowed down once he was far enough away from camp. He had crossed over a river, rolled in the weeds, and then crossed over the border. Satisfied that his so called guardian wouldn't be able to follow after him. His mother would have his hide if she knew that he has passed beyond the safety of the clan borders, but he had his reasons. Partially he just wanted to get away, but there was...something... he needed to collect
Of course, he wasn't as sly as he believed himself to be. If he thought himself a shadow in the night, Zidian was the night itself. But there was one other that could be as slippery as black waters under a dark sky and he was sidling alongside the tom slipping through the underbrush of Spring's territory as Zidian reflected on her charge's lack of capacity to think of anything or anyone other than himself.
"What are we sneaking out for?" The black tom whispered in Riverpaw's ear, half to startle the tom and get a reaction that filled him with joy, half to partake in the fun of the outing.
