For once, the white apprentice didn't argue. To tired and upset and Sunshine to even attempt a smart remark to the commander, though she did mutter something under her breathe as she limped over to where the Commander was standing. Her shoulder clearly worse instead of better. Perhaps the commander hadn't seen their little adventure into SunClan's territory, but that was hoping against the odds. Instead she waited quietly to see what Shule's next move would be.

"We'll talk once we're away from the border." The Commander answered brusquely, casting a final cautionary glance back towards SunClan before leading them away towards the tunnels once more, Arei bringing up the rear.
All was silent for a long few moments before she briefly looked over to Southpaw. "How's your shoulder? You're limping." Her voice wasn't necessarily warm, but it certainly wasn't the total harshness the she-cat was used to.

Why was her voice so... not harsh? It made Sunshine nervous and he fidgeted a little as they walked, shooting an anxious glance at Southpaw. Was she holding it in for later? Was she just going to torture them like this and explode later? After the day he had he wondered if she had some special ability to blow cats up or read their minds or something? That would be terrifying and he wanted nothing to do with it.

Southpaw was unusually quiet, the wheels turning in her mind to figure out what say when the inevitable happened
"Sore..." there wasn't really any point in lying about it now. She couldn't hide her limp from the trained of the commander nor would she try. She was tired, an every time she spoke it just got her into more trouble. For now she just breathed in her brother's scent that still clung to her pelt. A few of his dark hairs mixed in amongst the white. She hadn't seen him in so long....
That's when it hit her, she couldn't get herself out of trouble but perhaps she could help out Sunshine.
"I already know what your going to say, but I just wanted to go see my brother.... Sunshine was trying to stop me"

"You'll be on Auxiliary duties then, until your shoulder is properly healed. I'll have you helping Juliet make and rebuild the traps for the mercenaries." Southpaw wasn't getting an option, but honestly, once she realized what the duties entailed, and the fact that she got to sit around and tinker with vines all day for her food instead of run around until she was ready to throw up, Shule suspected she would be significantly more compliant. The white pawed Commander lapsed into silence again for a long moment. "Next time, you warn me before you try to go to SunClan. You could have gotten yourself or Sunshine seriously hurt, if you met anyone less forgiving than your brother Hakoda. What would you have done, if he got injured or killed by SunClan on your account?"

Southpaw looked down at the ground, but Shule wasn't being as cruel as she thought she was going to be. She had no clue what Auxiliary duties meant, but it couldn't be any worse than tunnel repair. She never got out of doing that with a clean pelt. She waited on the yelling and screaming, her eyes only lifting with the much softer words than she had been expecting reached her ears. It reminded her more of the way her mouther spoke to her, than the mean ugly face that she had met on her first day here "I can do that..." at least she hadn't forbidden her from going to see her family back in SunClan

"You don't know them as well as you think you do, Southpaw." Shule answered grimly. "I've known them since before the Sun God came to be. Did your father, Dusky, ever tell you how he came to join SunClan in the first place?" There was almost a hesitance there, and a dark look in the Commander's eyes that suggested she had every reason to distrust the clan Southpaw had been born to. "How much do you know about SunClan, from the time they began to follow the Sun God, to now?"

"No, not really" her mom and dad never really talked much about their past. She knew that they had family in DayClan and The Regime, but that was about it "Dad was promised with Bloodystar, and then got made when Littlestar got back and decided he didn't want to be promised anymore. Now my sister is Soaringlight, and my brother... "she trailed off unsure if the fact that Bravewolf was the Sun God was a secret or not
"Yeah, and Bravewolf is quite busy these days." Shule answered knowingly, though she hadn't exactly told Sunshine what was going on with his uncle Damek, so the young tom would likely be quite confused, though Southpaw would probably grasp that Commander Shule understood. "What do you think of Bloody? I'm suspecting your father hid a lot of from you, and you probably don't even know why Dusky was thrown into the Regime's Bootcamp, do you."

"Because you are a meany" she replied honestly "That's what Soaringlight said"
Southpaw would have shrugged her shoulder, but right now it was far to sore to do so "Bloodystar was daddy's friend. He said that Bloodystar did some bad things, but that he wasn't a bad cat underneathe it all, just angry and misunderstod"
"I'm sure that's what Soaringlight would like to think." Shule sighed, not necessarily surprised. "Your dad cares about Bloody, and while that's admirable, Dusky let people get hurt and turned a blind eye to what Bloody did. If you decide not to believe anything I tell you, ask Lex, he's... your grandfather, Dusky's father, despite not being Dusky's blood. But I'll get to that. When Bloodystar came to power, he did so by injuring Littlestar, and imprisoning her, taking her kits for himself. He justified it because Littlestar had killed the Sun God shortly before. Because the Sun God had forced a Soothsayer to become pregnant against her will, cursed her, and the Sun God let her kits die. I dislike Littlestar, but she did the right thing, in killing that Sun God. He's not the same as the one you know, not in the slightest. Bloody did many things in his leadership, including imprisoning Mountainsound, your grandmother, because she stood up to him. Brilliance here, in the Regime, came to us with all her limbs broken and more. She tried to kill Bloodystar, because he tried to force her into marriage against her will, and constantly told her it was the Sun God's will. Your father may like Bloody, but very few others would agree."

Southpaw burst into giggle, which seemed a little appropriate given the serious theme of the conversation. But the young apprentice couldn't really wrap her mind around what the Commander had said, not really "You know mom and dad say that you shouldn't lie, and that was a rule from the regime. So what are you trying to tell me such a wild story?" the only way that any of that added up in her mind was that the commander didn't really know the whole truth and small details had been exaggerated in the telling's before it got to her. It was common enough of a thing, that every time a story was told the details were embellished until a drizzle turned into a forest wide flood to make things more interesting
"Look I was in SunClan with Bloodystar, and I never saw him do any of those things. Well... other than the marriage thing with my siblings, but that was because he wanted to unite our families. Besides he didn't steal Littlestar's kits from her, so that they would have a family and not have to be in prison with their mother. Besides his mate was one of Littlestar's daughters. I know a lot of cats didn't like Bloodystar, but dad said he was just misunderstood"

"I'm not lying. That's why I told you to ask Lex. You could even go ask Mountainsound, she wouldn't lie for me, and she still lives in SunClan. But Bloody's reign is not the wildest part of this, Southpaw. Not by far. Anything he did, Foxstar did a hundred times worse. There's a reason some have used her as a warning tale to kits like you." Shule answered grimly. Southpaw could think what she wanted, but Commander Shule certainly seemed serious enough about it. "You could probably just ask your mother, for that matter. She's more likely to tell you the truth than simply give Dusky's happy go lucky version of events."

"Fine I will" she retorted, still not looking convinced
"I don't know a lot about Foxstar, but I don't really care either. She isn't in charge of SunClan any more. The last I heard she was living in DayClan, so I don't understand what that has to do with anything" It was a rather a big leap from saying sunclan was dangerous to that two leaders ago a high priestess did some bad things. She was young, the events that happened way back then long gone "By that logic I am in more dangerous in DayClan than in SunCLan"
Post by Honeystorm on Aug 28, 2021 22:45:03 GMT -5
"DayClan doesn't tend to listen to tyrants so much." Shule answered. "That's the only reason it would be safer, but I'd agree that it isn't safe either, I don't particularly trust Glowstar either."

Southpaw groaned "Do you even hear the words coming out of your mouth Shule?!?!?" she snapped, before realizing that it would probably earn her another lecture "If its dangerous and you don't trust her or Glowstar, the did you move the regime HERE" She stomped her good foot, clearly very unhappy with the explanation "You could have moved them anywhere, and YOU choose HERE"

The mostly black cadet sat on the sidelines, eyes wide and feeling stunned. Southpaw had guts. He had to give her that much at least. He anxiously locked the white patch on his chest nervously. Everything they were saying about sunclan seemed interesting and he was trying hard to follow along... but it really went over the young cat's head for the most part. He was not really raised in a politically charged environment and did not pay as much attention to those kinds of things as he probably should. "Southpaw," he tried to whisper nervously, knowing it was really no use to say anything to her.

"What? Its the truth" she replied stubbornly, looking over at the other cadet
She had disobeyed any orders, and nor was she calling Shule names. So surely she wasn't doing something wrong AGAIN? She mumbled something under her breathe about all these Regime cats being nothing but a bunch of snow flakes

She was so stubborn. It made him nervous. Sunshine shuffled his paws. Why did she have to argue with everything Shule said? It was so weird. "Is it really worth arguing over?" The Tom cat preferred to pick his battles and this didn't seem like the right hill to die on. What did she get out of all this anyway? He just didn't understand. He shot an anxious glance at Shule.

Southpaw pouted looking back over to Shule "Of course it is worth arguing over" she stated plainly, not wiling to back down from her position "If you have something to say, you should be ready to defend it and answer questions. That all part of being a leader, not just a leader, a good cat!" The white apprentice still didn't quite understand why everyone was so frustrated with her "If you just accept eveerything at face value, you are never going to learn anything. You are supposed to ask questions and investigate! If what you say is true, then why do you care if I ask questions? It means that I am TRYING TO UNDERSTAND"
