She grinned. "Yeah, me too," she sighed wistfully. She hated swimming, after all, and frankly, she'd prefer walking over the water, thank you very much. As they spoke, the light of the late afternoon was starting gold, lighting the top of the trees with a orange blaze, as if the trees themselves were lit with a fire.
The shadows were starting to get longer. Sunpaw turned to Crowpaw. "Should we start heading back?" she asked.

Crowpaw looked around at the changing sky and sighed. He didn't want to leave since he was really enjoying himself. "I suppose you're right," he meowed as he turned his eyes back to Sunpaw. "Let's gather up our feathers and get back to camp before it gets too dark." His face creased in a large smile. "Today was fun. We'll have to do this again sometime."

(let's do another thread with these two after the summerclan plot!!!)
She didn't really want to head back home either, but she wasn't fond of going around in the dark lest she fell into a river or something silly like that. "Hopefully we won't get in trouble for not coming back with any prey," she joked, though there was a part of her that wondered if they would get scolded for just that, "but yeah, we still have to catch the other types of fairies when the weather's nicer, remember?"

(Sure! Would you like to start it or do you want me to?)
Crowpaw had dropped down to where he had stashed his feathers. "Yes, I remember," he mewed with amusement in his voice. "Maybe we can find the kind that grant wishes." He didn't believe in any of this fairy stuff but he enjoyed playing as if all this were true. Sunpaw was sure fun to be around. She gave him a lighthearted perspective on things. "And as for prey, we can keep our senses alert on the way back to camp. Who knows - we might come across something we can catch." He didn't want to be reprimanded about their lack of caught prey but today was worth it if they were.

(could you? thanks ♥)
She giggled. "What kind of wish would you make?" she hummed, trotting alongside the tom, her tail swishing left to right. For once, she didn't have a laugh on her face, her eyes looking into the distance wistfully, her ears twitched thoughtfully. "To be honest, I think I'd want to see my real mom at least once...or my brother and my papa again, you know?"
Crowpaw nodded. "I never knew my father," he meowed. "Pantherclaw met him on the beach. She said a twoleg took him away before me and my littermates were born and she never saw him again." He had often wondered about him and thought about going to look for him sometime but never acted upon it.

Sunpaw listened intently. "Do you think he's still out there?" she asked quietly, a seriousness on her expression as she turned to him, "do you think you'll ever go look for him?" She hesitated for a moment, before speaking again. "I thought about it, you know," she confessed, "just going out and looking for my family. I mean, I love SummerClan and I'm so grateful to have Howlingheart but...it still weighs on me sometimes. I just want to know whether they're still alive and...I guess whether they ever looked for me again."

Not liking to talk too much about his father, Crowpaw wished he hadn't mentioned him. But now that it's out, he figured he might as well. Besides he felt comfortable talking with Sunpaw. She wouldn't think less of him, at least he hoped so. "I know what you mean," he meowed. "I don't know if I'll ever go looking for my father and anyways Pantherclaw doesn't know where he's at other than he's probably in some twoleg den somewhere." There it was out now. He's half kittypet, something he wasn't very proud of. Looking down, he began to gather his feathers together.

She didn't seem to mind at all. After all, her father hadn't been from the clans either. "Do you remember what he's like?" she asked, turning to him, "I don't remember my momma at all, I don't think we even had our eyes open yet but papa...he was pretty strict but he made sure we were safe and warm...my older sister said he was some kind of soldier once...or part of some group but I don't think he was from the clans either."

Relief flooded over Crowpaw as he realized Sunpaw didn't even seem bothered about his heritage. "I never met my father. He was gone long before me and my littermates were born," he meowed. "How he could ever leave Pantherclaw when she was expecting baffles me." He shook his head as he spoke. "I know I'd never leave my mate, that is if I ever have one, especially if she was having my kits. I'm sorry you never knew your mother," he said softly. "That must be hard. Pantherclaw is the best mother and I can't imagine what might have been if I never knew her."

She gave him a faint smile, one that didn't quite reach her eyes either. "Yeah, same here," she replied in a softer, hushed voice, almost as if the words she spoke were sacred, some type of secret themselves. She shrugged. "I once met my sister...she was a lot older than me, we were kits back then and...I dunno..."
She shuffled her paws. "She said that our mama left when she was a kit too, and she looked kind of sad. That's how we ended up with my papa too but...I got sick and that's how I ended up here. Howlingheart adopted me after but I've never seen my brother and my papa since, you know?"
It wasn't a story she repeated often. In fact, other than Howlingheart, she didn't know anyone else who knew the story.

"I'm so sorry to hear that," Crowpaw meowed through a mouth full of feathers. He spat them out on the ground and looked back up the tall tree they had climbed. Then he looked back down and his eyes met Sunpaw's. "Until now I never realized how blessed I've been all my life. I have lots of family here with me in SummerClan." Not knowing his own father now seemed almost petty compared to Sunpaw's situation.
He picked up one of his feathers and stuck it in the fur behind her head. "I'm glad you came to SummerClan and grew up here ... and that we're friends."

She gave him a smile, one that seemed both happy and sad at the same time. "I mean, I have Howlingheart now," she offered with a shrug, "and I guess SummerClan's always felt more like home than anything else; if I ever met my real mama, I doubt I'll be able to recognize her, if I'm honest."
Sunpaw looked at him with a soft smile. "I'm glad for that too," she replied, "I wouldn't trade SummerClan for anything."

This had been a good day for Crowpaw. A nice change of pace from his daily training and all his seriousness. A day I'll remember for a long time. "Well, let's go. We better get back before they send out a search party." He gathered up his feathers once again and began walking back to the camp.
