She shrugged. "You never know," she meowed as she moved towards the trunk of the tree, her eyes turned upwards to the nest Crowpaw was reaching towards, curiosity in the way her ears were perked, her tail was lifted. Feathers? She was curious nonetheless, as she leaped to another branch, climbing up to where Crowpaw was and peering into the nest. Feathers of black and iridescent blue made her gasp in surprise.
"They're so pretty," she gushed, "I hear DayClan cats decorate themselves with feathers or something. Do you think that's true? I wonder how they keep them on their fur."

"Who knows what those DayClan cats do? They're a bit weird I've heard," Crowpaw replied, disappointed his bit of teasing fell flat. Huh, maybe that's why I don't tease so much, he thought. Still eyeing the feathers, he remarked more brightly, "You know, I bet they could be woven into flower wreaths and then they'd stay in place. Let's collect some." He reached into the nest and drug out several of the pretty feathers. He especially liked the iridescent blue ones. "Do you know how to make wreaths?" He never took the time to learn but he always liked how they looked on other cats.

She giggled. "I hear all the other clans are weird," she joked, "but maybe it's just because we're biased. SummerClan is the best clan after all." She had barely seen the others but from Sunpetal's stories, she wasn't so sure she'd like any of them either. Still, Crowpaw had a pretty good idea about making pretty wreaths. "Maybe I can tie them to your tail, and then you'd look like a pretty bird too," she grinned, as she grasped a bunch of the larger feathers in her jaw, sneezing as the fluffy down feathers tickled her nose. "I think I do...but not as well as the garden keepers can. They're so good at it, I don't know how; my paws are way too clumsy for it."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Nov 8, 2021 19:18:53 GMT -5
"I've never tried to make them myself," Crowpaw admitted. "I was afraid if I did they'd make me a Garden Keeper apprentice instead of a warrior apprentice." He gathered up a few more feathers. "Maybe when we get back down you can try to tie some on my tail if you want." He kind of liked the idea. Maybe he'd start a new trend in SummerClan.
He looked up the tree and then down to the ground. "Well, do you want to continue climbing or do you want to go down now with our feathers?" If they were going to climb some more, he didn't want to be burdened by carrying them up the tree. The best place to stash them would be back in the nest they found them.

She giggled. "What's wrong with being a garden keeper," she teased, "you don't like flowers?" Grasping the feathers in her mouth, she glanced up. There were still a few branches above, some she knew they could reach. "Well we cooould go a little further," she pondered, turning to him, "what do you think?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 2, 2021 15:14:50 GMT -5
"Let's climb a bit more," he replied after placing his feathers back in the nest. "There's nothing wrong with being a Garden Keeper, it's just not the path for me. I'm going to be a warrior. I don't have the time to mess around too much with flowers and stuff." He reached up and dug his claws into the tree trunk again and began to haul himself up.

She nodded excitedly, climbing up another branch as she listened to Crowpaw talk. She could understand what he meant; garden keepers were a peculiar type, and perhaps she would've chosen it once, but she had always found her paws clumsy and her patience thin. It wasn't the kind of thing a garden keeper needed, and when the moment of choice happened, she simply picked the first one off the top of her head. She never put much weight on her decision, but now that Crowpaw mentioned it...she wondered if everyone else had stronger opinions of what they wanted to be.
"Did you always know you wanted to be a warrior?" she asked absentmindedly as she continued to climb, "or was there something you always wanted to be when you grew up?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 10, 2021 11:08:04 GMT -5
"Always a warrior," Crowpaw replied without hesitation. "Maybe someday I'll be chosen to be deputy." He had dreams of becoming a leader one day. Who knows? That just might happen. "I just want to be the best I can be for SummerClan." As he climbed higher, his paw dislodged a cluster of milkweed seeds that had been caught in the crook of a branch. They had been deposited there by an air current. The seeds floated down gently toward Sunpaw. "Hey! Watch out. Here come some fairies to visit you! I must have disturbed their nest."

She grinned. "Maybe you will," she replied brightly, "maybe you'll even be Crowstar! That'd be pretty cool you know. What kind of warrior name would you want anyway?" She leaped onto a branch after him, only to feel the flurry of seeds flutter around her, as she stared in a bright-eyed wonder, mouth open at the sight above her. The milkweed seeds were like snow, floating around as if they were truly fairies and woodland creatures in the air.
"They're so pretty!" she gasped, green eyes brightly shining before turning towards the tom with a smile, "I can't believe fairies really exist!" One of the milkweed seeds landed on her nose and she sneezed.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 14, 2021 16:18:51 GMT -5
Crowstar! He liked the sound of that name. "Yes, that would be cool," he mewed thoughtfully. "But for now I'd like something fierce so my enemies would be afraid before they even meet me. You know, my mentor told me my promotion isn't far away. I think I'd like something like, um, Crowslash or maybe Crowslayer."
By then the milkweed fairies had gotten her attention. He slapped his paw over his mouth to keep from laughing. I can't believe she really thinks those seeds are fairies! Then she sneezed. The milkweed seeds shot away from her from the blast of air. "Aw! Look now, you've scared them away." Then he stifled a snicker.

Her eyes widened at his choice of names. "Crowslash sounds better than Crowslayer," she announced, before giggling, "I just can't imagine you going out there and slaying crows all day for that name, you know? They're not even tasty...though I heard that crows could see the future! Do you think they can? I bet they can't, because they keep getting caught by us; if they could see the future they'd never get caught by a hunter."
Sunpaw shook her fur out as the seeds floated to the ground, still watching in wonder as she stood high in the trees with the brightest grin on her face. "That was wonderful," she sighed happily, "now I've seen two kinds of fairies, the shiny ones at night and the fluffy ones. I wonder if there's even more than that, what do you think? Maybe even the magical ones with the sparkles exist."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 18, 2021 18:35:24 GMT -5
Crowpaw smiled as Sunpaw spoke about his name choices. Maybe because he was named 'Crowpaw' he could see into the future? He gave his head a shake. Now I'm thinking like she does! he thought.
Shiny and sparkly fairies? he wondered. "I've never heard of them and you say you've seen shiny ones?" he asked dubiously. "What did they look like?" He didn't believe they existed, he just figured the same thing had happened like just now when she saw the floating seeds and thought they were fairies.

Sunpaw didn't seem to think anything was out of the ordinary; in fact, it all felt pretty standard to her. After all, she had seen them before, so why was it something surprising? She turned to Crowpaw with a conspiratorial grin. "It was a little while ago," she admitted, "I went on a patrol with some of the garden keepers and...well, it was starting to get dark and they started glowing, you know? There were so many of them just floating around the forest, it was almost like a sign, like they were trying to lead us somewhere." Of course, they weren't real fairies, just fireflies, but to a young apprentice, they seemed one and the same.

"Oh," he mewed with the dawning of realization. He had seen the lights before too but he knew them to be fireflies, not fairies. Should he disillusion Sunpaw with the truth? She should know the truth though. Maybe he'd do it in a more subtle way. "Yes, I've seen those bugs too this past Greenleaf. But I haven't seen them for some time now. They probably hide away somewhere warm when the weather gets cold." He wondered what other creatures she'd seen and mistaken for mystical beings. But admittedly he wondered how those bugs made their lights. He knew of nothing else but the sun, moon, stars, and fire that made light. "I'm just curious as to how they make their lights," he meowed thoughtfully.

She nodded brightly, before sighing. Of course, Sunpaw knew they were fireflies; that was what Sagebristle had said anyway, but it was always more fun imagining them as something else. After all, fairies existed, she was certain of it, even if they took the forms of flowers and bugs and everything else that seemed like magic in the moonlight.
"Yeah, I wonder that too," she mused, "maybe...maybe they're like normal bugs in the day and they soak up the sunlight and just...you know, the sun sort of gets collected, sort of like how the bees collect flower dust all the time!"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 26, 2021 17:03:00 GMT -5
That answer seemed plausible to Crowpaw. He knew the rocks soaked up the heat of the sun so why not have something that did the same only with it's light. Anyway it helped to explain this curious mystery.
"You may be right about that," he mewed. Actually he was impressed with her answer. Perhaps she had more brains than he had given her credit for. "They might use their lights to fly in the dark. Birds don't fly at night and they don't have lights like fireflies do."

She nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah that sounds pretty reasonable too," she thought, looking at the birds that were now passing them by. Surely there must be things they could do to test their theories but she had never seen those glowing bugs in the day. She wondered if they only woke at night. "I don't know how we'll ever test that theory but maybe one day if we catch one of them, we could keep them somewhere that's dark...you know, like a cave, and see what they do."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Dec 30, 2021 16:03:38 GMT -5
"Good idea," Crowpaw meowed. "But we'll have to wait until next Greenleaf to try it out. Like many creatures, I think they hibernate during Leafbare. It's been a long time since I've seen any flying around." The wind began to pick up a bit and ruffled his fur causing him to cling a little harder on his branch. "Brrr! Maybe that's not such a bad idea, I mean sleeping somewhere warm all through the cold season. This is my first Leafbare but I don't think I'll like it that much."

Sunpaw chuckled. "Yeah, I don't think they do," she agreed, before shrugging. She wasn't exactly looking forward to leaf-bare either. "I think this one's my first one too," she peered at Crowpaw, "do you think it's really as cold as they say it is?" Then again, Sunpaw wouldn't have to worry all that much; her fur was long, unique for a cat living in SummerClan, that was for sure. "I wonder if we'll get to see snow!"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Jan 11, 2022 19:41:18 GMT -5
"Yeah, that'd be great!" Crowpaw agreed. "I sure hope we get to see it." He remembered nursery tales told by the queens about fluffy frozen water that would fall from the sky like rain. "But what I'd really like to see is the lake's water frozen so hard that you could walk on it! Now that's hard for me to even imagine."
