Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
She hadn’t been to SummerClan since Bloodycrow’s failed beach day. Now standing on the beach once more, just outside of the tide’s reach, Aurorasky was contemplating going in the water. Last time it had been freezing cold and she had nearly drowned. Though that was because she had been tossed in unexpectedly against her will. This time would be different but it didn’t make her anymore confident.
The dark gray tom caught a foreign scent on the wind and paused in his hunt, lifting his head to drink it in. SunClan, he was certain of it - a few options ran through his mind, warriors that might have reasons to visit their clan, and his interest got the best of him. Sootstep abandoned the pursuit of a few fading scents and followed his nose back to the lake, where a she-cat he didn't recognize stood by the waters.
"SunClan cats, always marching around like you own the place," Sootstep growled, unsheathing his claws as he headed her way. "Tell me why I'm not going to shred you where you stand?"
She was so focused on the water in front of her she didn't even notice the tom's approach. Surprised, Aurorasky whipped around to face the cat confronting her. For a moment she actually believed she was in the wrong, of course she had been SunClan, and by blood always would be but that wasn't who she was anymore. Having so recently made SummerClan her new home it wasn't a surprise that the scent of SunClan hadn't fully faded from her pelt.
"O-oh no, you've got the wrong Idea, I'm not SunClan... well at least not anymore.."
"SunClan doesn't allow defectors," he replied flatly, "and we already have one of their Rays." Sootstep knew the visiting Ray from only one occasion, but she had left a sour taste in his mouth. Her daily duties of sharing the word of the Sun God were tedious enough and taught him far more than he wanted to know about their enemy, but his first visit up there had been even more unpleasantly enlightening.
He didn't pounce, but he started to pace suspicious circles around her, remaining far enough back that they weren't in attacking distance. He did detect a faint SummerClan scent on her coat now, but whether it was from visiting their camp or simply spying on their territory he didn't know. "What are you really doing here?"
"I left SunClan as soon as I had the chance, there's nothing for me there." She spoke more confidently this time, watching they gray tom as he paced around her, not flinching when he was in her blind spot. She was beginning to realize that this cat may never believe her, let alone trust her.
"I came here" she spoke, sweeping her tail around to gesture at the beach they stood on. "Because I wanted to give swimming another try."
"This isn't WaterClan. Go find somewhere else to swim." His circling stopped with him in front of her, but his suspicion didn't relent.
Sootstep had seen the consequences of cats trying to swim in their ocean and lake. Some of them made it out fine; most cats could dive in and out of the water all summer without an issue, but he couldn't look at the lake anymore without remembering it covered in ice. Sootstep wasn't there when the ice broke or when the first body plunged to unreachable depths, but he had seen the aftermath; a WaterClan warrior had lost his leg, and his best friend had lost everything. Her status, her confidence, her relationship, even her clan, even him. Dawnmemories hadn't been the same since.
So yeah, he wasn't going to trust anyone who wanted to swim here.
"No but, it's a beach, and beaches are meant for swimming." She did her best not to sound annoyed, but she didn't appreciate the way this tom was speaking to her. She knew he hadn't been at the beach the first time she'd visited SummerClan, so there was no way for him to know that she couldn't swim, well rather, that she was nearly sent to her icy grave due to poor timing. So his attitude towards her was uncalled for.
"Besides what do you care if a SunClan cat drowns anyway?"
"I don't care, if you drown on your own land," he replied testily. "But if you drown here, I have to deal with it. I have to dig out your sorry body and drag it back to your clan and convince them you died of your own stupidity and not start a war between the clans. Do you think Ratstar is going to do any of that? He'll let you float away and your family will never know what happened to you."
the she-cat smiled softly, her dark brown eyes glimmering with amusement as she tried not to laugh. She knew from the start Sootstep had no idea who she was but, now it was becoming more apparent just how much he didn't know.
"Well if I drown, technically I won't die on any land" she pointed out, "Though I'm sure once you drag my sodden corpse back to camp Ratstar won't have to say anything the whole clan will know I'm dead, but with any luck you'll have to explain to our clan that you didn't drown me once you start raving nonsense about me being a SunClan cat."
The piercing stare that Sootstep leveled her way was filled with disappointment.
She knew there was land beneath the water, right? The lake wasn't bottomless. She was just being a thorn in his side for absolutely no reason.
"If I drowned you, they'd never find the body," he replied flatly, the venom leaving his voice as he mulled over the new information. Our clan. So she really had left her home clan behind, at least for now, to join his. Did Ratstar really think she had given up on her old life? She was a SunClan cat, she still had their scent on fur.
"Ratstar is a bigger idiot than I realized," he muttered, a little incredulous that it was still possible after all this time.
