Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
It had been a while since Dawnbringer had been made a member of the loyal guard - an event that still seemed like a sick joke to the dark brown tabby - and even longer since Duskveil had gone missing. He had searched everywhere for a trace of her, either a good or bad one, but none could be found. It was mysterious, how could two cats just up and vanish like that? Even though he didn't want to, he had to move on with his life. He had done far more than the rest of his clanmates had in attempting to find her, that would have to be enough to settle the guilt that still gnawed at his stomach.
He had to do something, go somewhere. Anything to keep his mind busy. For that, however, he had to have a goal in mind, since mindless wandering never helped. But, what should he do?
Aspenstar had been very intentional about not interacting with the tom much. Of course, that seemed ironic, as the tom was now among her inner circle. The others still didn't understand that decision; why would you bring a tom into your guard who had reasons to wish you ill will? These cats were supposed to be her confidants and her protectors, why take the risk by placing a tom on the unit that she was unsure of? She hadn't been able to explain it to Phantomfox, not really. She just knew that it was what had to be done.
Which was precisely how she felt about this conversation. It had been the better part of several moons since Duskveil had gone missing and Dawnbringer had been promoted, which meant that there had finally been enough time that she could hope his anger towards her was no longer acrid. Perhaps it still was; perhaps Dawnbringer would always hate her. She supposed she couldn't fault him for that; after all, her seeming ambivalence to his sister's disappearance was the cause of it all. Would she not have done the same? When her brother went missing, she had someone who jumped at the opportunity to find clues together with her. When Aspenstar needed something, the clan was at her beck and call. The same wasn't true for the tom, and Aspenstar could genuinely empathize with that.
Yet, avoiding him forever was a non-option, which was precisely why she padded up to him today. "Mind if I join you?"
I should have escaped sooner was the first thought that came to Dawnbringer's mind the moment that Aspenstar's voice reached his ears. In the moment between when he heard her and when he turned to face her, he had both debated over and thrown out the thought of just saying no, but he figured that wouldn't end too well. It already felt like he was walking on thin ice when it came to the leader, and he made sure to control his every movement, from expression to the fur of his tail, when around her. Of course, there was no doubt that Aspenstar already knew of the anger that he harbored because of her, but the fewer who was aware of it, the better. He may not have had too much experience in talking with others, but his mind wasn't dull. It likely wouldn't end well for him.
Carefully and slowly, Dawnbringer nodded. "It's not like I can stop you," he replied. Neither a yes or no, but it was approval enough. Of course, he kept his expression blank as he took his gaze off of the leader and back in front of him. "Since I don't actually have anywhere in particular that I'm going right now, I suppose this will be more of me joining you?"
If he would have told her no, he would have lost his position. At one point in time, that wouldn't necessarily have been the case. At one point in time, Aspenstar had been much more open to dissent. Now, she had grown quite the intolerance for it, especially for those in her inner ranks. For better or for worse, Dawnbringer was part of her elite circle. She was glad she wasn't faced with the dilemma, though, when he sort of agreed. Agreed was a strong word, but he accepted her request. Good, she thought with a twitch of her tail. Maybe this isn't going to be a waste of my time.
"I suppose you're right," she meowed with a blink, "when you put it that way." The half-blind leader stretched before offering a nod and padding off to their right. "I know you harbor animosity towards me," she meowed as she walked. "I am afraid that that animosity will one day boil over and will put us in a position where your loyalties to the clan are compromised. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid that, so I thought perhaps we could have a chat?"
