"Is she dead or something?" Sagepaw asked, glancing up at the gathering clouds overhead with a faint look of concern. She hadn't planned for a storm. "Because if she's alive, you're better off not knowing her. My ma scooted as soon as I was weaned, and good riddance to her. I don't want anything to do with someone who doesn't want me. But if she's dead, I'm sorry about that."
The last sentence was tacked on as an afterthought, an attempt to be respectful if she was dissing moms when Moonpaw's was deceased. Personally, though, she'd never seen much use for them. They were almost as bad as fathers.

Moonpaw blinked at Sagepaw, as if he had never really considered that before. Was she dead? The rest of his family had spoken of their mother as if she was alive, as if she was living her own life far away from them, but now that he was older, he understood the way some cats would talk, speak of sweet nothings just to soften the blow on those too young to understand. After all, Charlotte had been surprised to hear that they were her siblings. The adults had taken time to speak in whispers as he and Evenie slept.
"I don't know," he admitted, "my papa said she just had other things going on and she couldn't take us with her. I met one of my sisters...she was from an older litter. She...she sounded surprised when papa said my mom was still alive. They said she needed to do what she could to survive." That was what he had said to him too when he left the young kit in NightClan. For the first time, he felt almost a bitterness around this topic.
"I wish they didn't hide so many things from me because they thought I couldn't handle it," he muttered under his breath, voicing a thought that had occurred again and again, but he had been too young to understand.
If Sagepaw had had a little more emotional intelligence, she would've been more comforting. As it was, she empathized deeply with Moonpaw, though her empathy manifested itself as deep-seated bitterness and a flash of anger. "That's horse-dung." Her whiskers twitched violently, her gaze locked straight ahead. "Who cares if they had other things going on? If we were such an impediment to our parents, they shouldn't have had us in the first place."
"Then they hide things from us like us we're stupid," she grumbled, rolling her shoulders as she walked. Her voice deepened in an unflattering mockery of her father's. "'Oh, Maia, we're going to find a new home in the forest together. I won't leave you. Don't worry- I'll be right back.' It's bullsh-"
Sagepaw's tirade was interrupted by the eruption of the summer storm. Rain pelted down quite suddenly and with a vengeance, splattering their pelts, vastly reducing visibility, and muddling the scents of the forest together. Suddenly, the small tabby wasn't sure which way was south anymore. She stopped short, turning to Moonpaw in confusion. "It's kind of hard to see..." she started, before flinching as a piece of hail struck her shoulder. "Mouse dung! We can't go anywhere in this weather-ow!"

Moonpaw didn't know how to react to that. He understood the anger. He had felt the same, but he'd never admit it. Still, the thought of what she said made him uncomfortable. Why did his mother leave him? Was it really so bad, to take care of him and his sister? Was he so bad that everyone would leave him? It wasn't just his mother, but his stepfather too, and Charlotte, and even Evenie. His ears drooped at the thought of that.
Perhaps he'd be even more miserable if the crack of thunder didn't made him jump, and suddenly there was rain, and a heavy one at that. He swore under his breath. "We need to find somewhere to hide," he spoke immediately, squinting at Sagepaw, as he looked around. The world was shrouded in the rain now, when something fell on his tail and he jumped. What was that? Hail?
"Come on!" he yowled above the loud rain, "let's find a tree or something!"
Sagepaw spun wildly, searching for a place to shelter, but she was hard pressed to find one in the deluge. There was a semi-promising shape cloaked in shadow a distance away, and she nodded towards it, following Moonpaw as he made his way over. The shape proved to be a fallen tree trunk, hollow inside. Sagepaw didn't really trust it not to splinter apart under the hail, but it was better than nothing. She wriggled in after her companion, thankful for her smaller frame.
"It's musty in here," she grumbled, shifting the brown pine needles under her feet. The sound of rain was dulled overhead by the tree, at least, and they were out of the wind. Still, the space was small, and she found herself closer to Moonpaw than usual out of sheer necessity. "Are you okay?" She asked after a moment, glancing over at the tom. "Any cuts from the hail?"

He raced after Sagepaw, wincing as he narrowly avoided a ball of hail to the face. They were getting bigger and bigger, and it felt like running through some sort of obstacle course. He had no idea where they were heading, he just dashed after Sagepaw, letting out a hiss of pain when one of the chunks slammed into his back. It didn't break anything, but he was sure it'd leave a bruise.
Diving after the other apprentice, he found himself in the hollow of a tree, wrinkling his nose at the same scent Sagepaw must've smelled. "Yeah," he mumbled, peering nervously at the sky. It didn't look all that great; the sky was grey but in an angry way, as if saying the storm wasn't going to subside anytime soon.
He only looked at Sagepaw when she spoke. "Cuts?" he echoed absentmindedly, before realizing that oh, where the hail hit did kind of hurt. "I got hit," he replied sheepishly, "but I don't think it's anything too serious." He looked her over. "How about you?"
"My shoulder," she mumbled, glancing down at the shallow cut that was leaking drops of blood. "It stings, but I think I'll live." After a moment to catch her breath, she bent her head to give her should a few rough licks, trying to stem the bleeding. "Maybe you'll have to amputate, though," she said with a humorless laugh, glancing over Moonpaw's form again. "Turn around and let me see your back. I have to make sure your nice fur isn't ruined."

He moved closer to her, looking closely at her wound. It didn't seem too horrible...it was a cut but Moonpaw was also acutely aware of how simple cuts could easily become heavier wounds if not carefully looked after. He glanced up to Sagepaw with a frown. "We should definitely get that looked at when we're back at camp," he murmured, before freezing.
Back at camp. Right. They were out here without permission. She was injured. Which meant...when they were back at camp...oh gods, they were going to get in so much trouble. He groaned at the thought. "You think Aspenstar would just...not notice if we snuck back with injuries?" he mumbled, "just pretend I accidentally scratched you in my sleep or something?"
He looked sheepish as he turned around, looking to Sagepaw. "Anything wrong?" he frowned, uncertain of what it was. It just felt like a bruise but he wasn't sure.
"We can go out early tomorrow and pretend to spar, then come back and get our wounds treated," Sagepaw suggested, examining the slight abrasion on his back. "Cats get injured all the time, it doesn't necessarily mean we'll be caught." She bent forward slightly, cleaning the scrape with a few rough licks.
"Just a scrape. We'll both live," she said, before turning in a circle and settling down, watching the hail and rain continue to fall outside their small log shelter. "Though we'll have to find a way to pass the time until the storm ends. Know any games?"

Sagepaw had a point, they could always make stuff up about getting into a scrape, though he was sure that regardless, Larkspur would find a way to scold the two of them, if not for sneaking out, surely for leaving bruises and scratches on each other in their little fights disguised as 'training sessions.' Moonpaw already accepted his fate at this point, and he sighed, peering at the skies once more. The weather had gone from zero to everything; he could barely see six feet in front of him now.
"Yeah sure," he replied with a frown, but his ears immediately perked up at the sound of a game. Despite his attempts to pretend to be a chill, cool cat around the clan, he was always easily excitable, and games were a surefire way to get his attention, even if he did throw the towel in more often than not just to keep the peace.
"We could do never have I ever," he suggested, "or truth or dare?"
Sagepaw noted the way his ears perked up at the mention of a game, and a small smile tugged on her lips despite herself. "Truth or dare," she said, mostly because it was the game she was more familiar with. "You first. Truth or dare?"
In her time in Nightclan, she hadn't played much with the other kits and apprentices. She hadn't played much before coming to Nightclan, as she'd lived alone most of the time and been surrounded by adults when she hadn't been left to entertain herself. Playfulness, aside from jesting and banter, didn't come naturally to her.

He grinned at that. Truth or dare huh? He wasn't a coward, but at the same time...well, he wanted to see what kind of cat Sagepaw really was. "Truth," he decided with a nod, "what's your question?"
Sagepaw considered this for a moment, realizing she wasn't very imaginative when it came to these kinds of games. She did want to learn more about Moonpaw, though, so she thought about what she really, truly, wanted to ask him. "If you could do everything over again, knowing what you know now, would you stay in Nightclan when you were left here?"

That was....a really tough question. He had half expected easy ones. What kind of prey do you like? Do you have a crush on any of the other apprentices? What's the most embarrassing story you have? Things like that, but this? He had to think about it. "I don't know," he admitted finally, "I like it here. I guess I don't know where my dad or mom are, and I've never really met my real mom, you know? So there's not much I can compare it to...but I miss my sister a lot too. To be honest, Larkspur and everyone else has been so nice to me here...I don't know if I really want to leave either."
He smiled softly, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I think at this point, I've lived in NightClan longer than I've lived anywhere else," he admitted, "and sometimes, I wonder if my life would be better or worse if I didn't...but sometimes I can't really imagine having it better while travelling everywhere without a home."
He shook his head, a quiet laugh leaving his mouth. "Sorry, I probably sound like such a downer," he replied, shaking it off as if he hadn't just opened himself up to the thick air of vulnerability just moments before. He turned to her, blinking slowly as if taking a deep breath, before smiling that ever-present Moonpaw smile. "Truth or dare?"
"Do you realize who you're speaking to?" Sagepaw asked with a wry grin, resting her chin on her paws. "I'm the queen of downers, aren't I? That's what everyone thinks, anyway." She was silent for a long time, thinking over what he'd said, and she realized she empathized with a lot of what he was feeling.
"I appreciate truth more than blind optimism, anyway," she said, glancing over at him, offering him a faint smile. "And truth. To make it equal."

He grinned. "Yeah, guess you're keeping me around to balance that out," he rolled his eyes, before chuckling, "to be honest you're not as depressing when you're not around the others."
Moonpaw hummed, thinking over the questions he could ask. He could've asked something just as deep, and part of him wanted to. There were so many things he was curious about, whether she too wanted to follow her father to the ends of the earth now, whether she had lofty goals of her own...
He instead, chose an easier question to start with. "If you could be any other animal, what would you be?" he asked with a chuckle.
Sagepaw couldn't help it- the lighthearted question after the more serious one made her genuinely laugh out loud. It was a bright sound, different from her usual, harsher chuckle. "I guess a deer? I think they're pretty, and they seem to have a good life of sleeping and eating. None of this fighting and patrolling stuff we have to do." The smile she flashed him after answering was wider than normal.

He nodded thoughtfully. "To be honest, sometimes they freak me out, especially when it's dark out and you don't expect them to be there and they just stare at you with those eyes, you know?" He shook his head, laughing lightly, before turning to Sagepaw with a grin. "Dare," he smirked, "throw me your worst I guess."
"I bet I freak you out when it's dark out," Sagepaw said, with a teasing grin as she gave him a fake growl. "Though I do aspire to be as unnerving as a deer."
Oh, Starclan, he was asking for a dare. She really wasn't good at these games, and she couldn't make him go outside with the hail, could she? "Uhhhh..." she said, whiskers twitching as she thought. "I dare you to... eat one of those old mouse bones." She pointed with her forepaw to the half-buried carcass of some long-dead creature.

He rolled his eyes. "I'm not scared of the dark, I just think their glowing eyes are creepy sometimes." He shuffled his paws, his retort didn't sound like a great argument but he didn't care. Deer were just large gangly things who were way too tall with creepy eyes at night. He hated how they didn't move when they stared. It was just weird.
Moonpaw grimaced at the dare. "Eugh, sounds gross," he grumbled, "if I get a stomachache you can explain to Pinesimmer what happened." Still, he wasn't one to back down from a dare, and he grabbed a bone almost delicately in his jaws, before taking a crunch out of it, the powdery bone practically cracking like a biscuit in his jaws. It must've been old because that was way too easy; there wasn't even any marrow left in the bones.
Eugh, it tasted gross. He stuck out his tongue after that, trying to use a paw to brush off the rest of the bone dust still in his mouth. "Ugh that was foul, truth or dare?"
