Sagepaw was, quite frankly, bored of being in camp. She had been cooped up for the past couple of days in the torrential downpour that coated the territory, and now that it had cleared up, she was ready to get out. It seemed like a good evening for it- Larkspur had finished their training, Phantomfox was busy and not paying her any mind, and the other apprentices were chatting after dinner in the clearing of camp.
No one would miss her. Usually, that weighed heavy on her soul, but right now it was a blessing. It allowed her to slip quickly and quietly out of camp, intent on having a roaring time that night and ignoring all borders and rules about 'leaving the territory'.
Only her escape wasn't as clean as she'd expected. Moonpaw, whom she'd been sort of avoiding since he'd caught her crying that one night, had to be the one to spot her leaving. Of course.
"What, are you gonna report me for sneaking out?" Sagepaw asked, in a tone that normally would've been snippy, but now was just faintly teasing. She hadn't forgotten his kindness that night.

Of course, it was Moonpaw who watched her sneak out of the camp. They were technically not supposed to be out at all, but he was also technically supposed to be with his partner at all times, so he didn't feel all too bad about following Sagepaw. If anything, he'd just throw her under the bus if they got caught, he thought with a chuckle as he followed after her.
Apparently, he wasn't quiet enough, because she had caught him quickly enough. "No, but if we get caught, I'm not taking all the blame," he laughed, as his eyes sparkled in curiosity. "Where are you going anyway?" He was always a curious type of cat, and well, if she was sneaking out–something he had loved trying to do as a kit–then surely, there must be somewhere she wanted to go.
"Fine by me," she said, amber eyes flitting up to the star-studded dusk sky. "It was my idea anyway. As long as you don't say I made you come along." Sagepaw started off again, keeping up a steady pace as she trekked through the woods, sensing Moonpaw's warmth a few paces away from her as he walked with her.
"I don't know where I'm going," she admitted after he asked. "I just can't be in camp right now. There's gotta be cool things beyond the border, right? We'll be back before anyone realizes we're gone, but I want to find something interesting first."

He chuckled. "I'll just blame it on the buddy system," he grinned, "we're supposed to stick together at all times in case we get...I dunno, attacked by a badger or something. Which is kind of stupid if you ask me. It's like they want two apprentices killed instead of one, as if I'd be able to help if we were suddenly attacked by a badger."
Moonpaw had gotten used to the other she-cat's testy attitude by now, and he just treated everything as normal. Then again, she had been a bit nicer than before, and he appreciated it, though he wasn't sure what had really changed. As she spoke, he raised a brow, curiosity in his eyes. "Did Jackdawpaw piss you off again?" he frowned, "I thought you two weren't talking to each other anymore." Why else did she want to escape NightClan's territory?
"We could take a badger," Sagepaw said, flicking an ear back with a faint grin. "Well, mostly me, but I guess you're not too shabby when it comes to fighting." His question caught her off guard, and she hummed thoughtfully to herself. While she'd gotten less aggressive towards Moonpaw (and only Moonpaw), she was still more sedate than usual tonight.
"Jacky always pisses me off," she said, rolling her eyes. "He's an expert at that. But no, we didn't fight. You don't ever want to just... go? Get out and explore? See the world?" Perhaps that was something she'd gotten from her father- his wandering feet- but it stirred up in her sometimes and then the limitations of camp, even of the territory, seemed too claustrophobic for her. Even as a kit, she'd been dying to get out and train, to do something other than sit around in one spot all the time. "I guess I'm just feeling restless tonight."

"Huh, coming from a cat who could barely take me down? Please," he snorted, humour laden in his voice, "not to mention your best moves? Pretty sure you stole them from me." They had worked together a little more in their training these days, so really, he didn't mind, but Moonpaw had always felt competitive with Sagepaw, and this was no different.
He laughed at the comment about Jackdawpaw; he knew the two didn't get along. Still, it was amusing to know how to annoy someone exactly, and the other cat sure knew how to do so. At her other words, he nodded, humming to himself in thought. "I guess sometimes I'm curious," he replied slowly, "my dad wasn't from NightClan either so sometimes I wonder where he went...and I wonder where my sister is, you know?"
“If I took them, I only made them better,” Sagepaw rebuffed, equally amused. Her cooperation with Moonpaw had led them to both rapidly improve, but unfortunately that meant they were pretty closely tied for the title they were both after. If Sagepaw wasn’t top of her class… well, she didn’t want to think about it.
His comment initially didn’t surprise her, but the end caught her off guard. Sagepaw stopped for a moment, glancing over at Moonpaw with a curious amber gaze. “I didn’t know you had a sister,” she said after a moment, before resuming her path towards the border. “Why isn’t she here?”

He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, keep telling yourself that and maybe one day it'll come true," he snorted, amusement flashing in his eyes. He had wanted the top of class position plenty, but part of him wanted it because maybe if he could prove he could do things well, he'd be able to find his father one day, and show him that he turned out fine. Just the way his papa wanted him to be.
The humour faded when her question was posed; his eyes clouded over with a melancholy that seemed almost too deep for an apprentice like himself. "I..." he started quietly, pointedly avoiding Sagepaw's gaze lest her eyes held some type of emotion he wasn't ready to handle, "we were kits, you know? Travelling around with papa but...then she got sick and we didn't know what to do. We met a cat in the fields once, and he had some herbs, and gave us some to travel but Evenie couldn't go on, she was so sick, so we stayed there for a while so she could get better, but papa said we couldn't stay too long...so we left her there so she could get better. I think it was one of the other clans but we never really found out which and...we were going to go back for her but..."
Sagepaw fell silent as Moonpaw talked, her spine prickling with unease and awkwardness. She had caught sight of his melancholic eyes, saw the slump of his shoulders, and recognized defeat in his gait. It wasn't as if she didn't sympathize with his plight, she did, she just... was really bad with both comforting and receiving comfort. After a long period of silence, she spoke again.
"Ah... sorry about that," she mumbled awkwardly, averting her gaze as much as possible as they crossed the border into unclaimed land. "That, uh, sucks." Suddenly she perked up, an idea flashing through her mind. Sagepaw may have been terrible with verbal sympathies, but she'd always been a cat of action, and now she saw clearly how to help. "Let's go find her- right now! While we're already out."

Moonpaw was surprised by the sudden eagerness Sagepaw seemed to have. He had thought maybe, his whole chat would've scared her off. After all, he constantly avoided any talk of his past lest it was too depressing for others to relate to; he hated ruining the mood. For a moment, he had assumed he had done just that, but...well, this was a surprise.
He gave her an awkward laugh. "Yeah, we could but we'd be breaking loads of rules...not to mention, I don't know where she'd be...we travelled a pretty long time afterwards. All I remember was that...I think we ended up travelling a different direction after we dropped her off. Oh, and there were some really nice flowers in a field before we got there."
"We're already breaking lots of rules," Sagepaw pointed out, flicking her ear back. "But if you're too scared to go look for her, you can go back and I'll go alone. I'm already determined to make sneaking out worth it, and this seems worth it." The flower comment made her pause. "Certainly not Winterclan," she mumbled, thoughtfully.
Rosethorn had come from Summerclan, she knew, as she'd overheard her telling stories to Foxpaw when he was still a kit. She talked a lot about the flower fields and the flower crowns and her time as a garden keeper... "Sounds like Summerclan or Springclan- they're close to each other, I think." It could potentially be Dayclan too, or Sunclan? But that was too many possibilities, so she focused on the ones she knew about. "I think Rosethorn said Summerclan was directly south of here, and Springclan had gotta be near that. We could check there."

He knew this wasn't the best idea, but Sagepaw had a point. There was definitely a chance of finding her, but going to another clan's territory? Wouldn't they be...mad? His brows raised at her comment. He had no idea where WinterClan was, but it seemed like Sagepaw, despite being rather new to all of these clan things like him, knew the territory a little better than he did.
"SummerClan?" he echoed, "SpringClan?" He didn't know either of those places, but it had been warm when they had left. Surely, any of those possibilities couldve worked. "We could...is that far? Will we get caught by their border patrols, you think?"
"Rosethorn's told me a little about the groups," she confessed, like it was a weakness to sit around and listen to queen's stories. "Don't you overhear when the older cats talk? She used to be deputy of Summerclan, and they had pretty much open borders. She said it wasn't too far, but I don't think she was expecting me to try to go there. I think Springclan is similar?"
Sagepaw paused, glancing up at the stars that were coming through the russet and navy twilight sky. "We're in good shape. It isn't too far for us. C'mon- we can go! Don't you want to see your sister?"

"Really?" he asked, wide-eyed. He had only heard of their neighbors–SunClan, MoonClan, even DayClan–but he had yet to really learn about the ones farther away by the mountains. On one hand, it'd be interesting to go, and they might really find his sister...but if they were caught? He'd have no idea how to explain this to Larkspur, sneaking out of camp after hours, going out of their territory, AND trespassing...that was a lot of things to get in trouble for.
Still, the determination in Sagepaw's eyes struck a different chord within him, and he was never one to back down from a challenge, especially with their little competitive streak they had going on, and in a way, he was almost grateful for Sagepaw's eagerness. "Yeah, let's go," he agreed, "you know how to get there? Or are we just going to explore until we find it?"
"I don't know, like, specifically, but we can just head due south and I'm sure we'll get there." Sagepaw lifted her nose, scenting the air cautiously. They were in neutral territory now, and who knew what kind of threads lie out here in the shadowy spaces under the trees? Frankly, Sagepaw was almost a little nervous- but of course that could never be made public, so she kept her brave face on.
"Where'd you come from, originally?" She asked after a few minutes of silence, tilting her head. Somehow they'd never really talked about their pasts all that much, and she found herself curious.

His nose exhaled sharply in a sound of amusement. It wasn't funny, but in a way, it sort of was. That was how he had spent the first moons of his life too, meandering in some vague direction hoping to get somewhere. Maybe his amusement came from his own nerves too; he had never really disobeyed his mentor, or...well, anyone in his life, at least not to this degree. If they got into trouble...well, he'd rather not think about it.
Her question made him shrug. "To be honest, I'm not sure," he replied sheepishly, "from when I was old enough to remember, we were already on the road. We came from a forest I think, it was so thick you could barely see the sky!" He turned to Sagepaw with a tilt of his head. "Where are you from?"
“A city- not the one everyone talks about around here,” she clarified, flicking back an ear. “Not the one with that League group. It was really far, and for a long time I missed the twoleg towers and the tight alleyways, but I like the forest now. There’s more room, and it’s easier to breathe out here.”
Besides, the forest wasn’t connected with memories of her father. “Though I can’t imagine a forest that thick. It sounds nice, ‘specially if you were with your sister. What’s she like? I want to be prepared for when I meet her.”

He nodded thoughtfully; Moonpaw had never been to the city. Forests was all he ever knew. "I've never seen a city," he replied, turning to look at his companion, "but maybe one day...it might be nice to see what it's like." What would it be like, to be taken away from all he had known and to be put somewhere new? Surely, it must've been just as strange for Sagepaw to be in the forest too.
"She's got golden fur," Moonpaw smiled, "and green eyes. Apparently she looks like our mom...but I wouldn't know. She was always really fun; she always came up with all of our games when we were younger, you know? She always wanted to go on adventures, so going on the road was sort of her thing. We wanted to go hunt badgers together."
"It's not all it's cracked up to be," Sagepaw said laconically, with a shrug as she thought back to the lonely days holed up in the abandoned twoleg buildings, waiting and waiting and waiting for her father to remember to stop by and feed her. Maybe if she'd been older and able to explore on her own, it would have been better. "There's not a lot of food."
There was a distinct pang of jealousy in her chest at the smile on Moonpaw's face, in the warm way he spoke of his sister. "It's good you didn't hunt badgers," she grumbled, kicking at the loose dirt with her paws as they walked, retreating briefly back into sullenness. "They would've eaten you both alive. You never knew your mom?"

He frowned at that. It seemed like finding food was a struggle for all parents; he had watched his papa hunt, as well as Charlotte's few lessons when he was a kit. Having to fend for the kits on their own must've been difficult, Moonpaw thought. He never considered how lonely his papa must've been, having to take care of them by himself.
Moonpaw chuckled at Sagepaw's words. "Yeah, probably," he admitted, "we just thought it'd be cool to be like those fierce wildcats my papa used to talk about, you know, the ones that live in the darkest part of the forest. They were supposed to be evil but...when we were younger they just seemed really cool to the two of us I guess."
At the mention of his mother, he shook his head. "We must've known her for a bit but....to be honest, I don't remember her at all," he admitted sheepishly, "we were so young, you know? We've heard a lot of stories about her though. I wish I could meet her."
