The Jarl looked about, his thick brown coat stark against the white of freshly fallen snow. He was looking for his novice. His first one. He had seen Stormpaw, then Stormkit sulking around the nursery before but had yet to interact with him. He hoped that the novice was feeling alright today, hoping to get somewhere, something to get him excited. The silver tom was yet to be seen though, and the tom sat at the fresh-kill pile, knowing that eventually the younger tom would eventually need to eat.
He didn't know how he managed to be fortunate enough to be assigned to the Jarl to train under. He expected some nobody to be his mentor - not that he'd complain, relieved enough that he was being trained in the first place - instead of the second-in-command of the Clan. A small part of him had kept him tucked in his nest longer than he needed as he tried to convince himself the day before had at least in part been a dream. Sweetpine wasn't his mentor. He just imagined that he was. That was the only way to explain why he still woke up in the apprentices' den.
As the Jarl predicted, though Stormpaw tried to delay getting up for a while longer, the young tabby's rumbling stomach pulled him from his nest eventually. He picked a few stray scraps of his new nest from his pelt before he slid out from the novices' den and padded to the fresh-kill pile. He was surprised to see Sweetpine waiting nearby, idly wondering who he was waiting for. Surely it wasn't for him. As Stormpaw padded up to the fresh-kill pile, he dipped his head in greeting to the older tom, mumbling his name along with the gesture.

The deep chocolate tom padded up to his apprentice, not so much urgency, but just a lightness in his step. "Care to share?" he asked, dipping his head at his novice, "I've yet to eat anything myself and we shouldn't train on an empty stomach." he advised, prodding a large rabbit in the pile. It was funny. He had brought it back to the camp last night, a surprise as to how no one else had grabbed it yet. "We can split this."
For a moment Stormpaw thought the Jarl was speaking to someone else. He instinctively glanced towards Sweetpine regardless, though, at which point after a quick glance in the opposite direction for anyone standing there he realized he was the one being spoken to. He hesitated at the realization before he replied, "Uh, okay." He didn't know why Sweetpine wanted to share prey with him - probably mostly convenience if he had to make a guess - but he wasn't about to question it out loud. At least, not right now. The hungry ache in his stomach was reason enough for him to just accept the older tom's offer. That rabbit did look really good.

He smiled, "Glad thats decided," the dusky tom mewed, pricking the prey with his claws. He dragged it over to the younger tom, setting it before him as he laid down, rolling his hips beneath him so his rear legs kicked out to the side. He nodded, motioning for Stormpaw to relax the same. "How was your night?" he asked, tearing into the soft fur of the bunny, "I hope the older novices haven't bothered you about moving into the den."
He didn't move to lay down until Sweetpine gesture for him to do so, though he more crouched beside the rabbit than actually relaxed. He waited for the Jarl to take first bite of the prey, long enough to answer the questions he was asked. "I slept okay," he replied with a small shrug. He hadn't slept great, kept uncomfortable practically all night with the nerves and edge of dread that gnawed at his belly. But he at least got some sleep, especially with his attempt to delay the inevitable. The older tom's latter statement was much easier to answer honestly. "No, they didn't bother me at all," he said, gaze drifting down towards his paws as he spoke. "For all I know they hardly even noticed." There certainly had been plenty of other new novices in the den for them to worry about. Tending to keep to himself anyways, it was easy enough for Stormpaw to have blended into the background the night before. He glanced up towards Sweetpine one more time - he had to make sure eating prey this early was okay. After all, weren't the older apprentices meant to catch prey for the Clan before eating themselves? - before he scooted forwards to tear off a mouthful of rabbit for himself.

He smiled when Stormpaw began to eat. He himself wasn't all too hungry, and his background threw caution to the wind about the stickler-ish clan rules that Winterclan had. Even as the second in command most of it was too formal for him, he knew a hungry novice was no good at learning anything, especially one that had an empty stomach and a head full of nerves. "So what would you like to learn?" he asked, tipping his head. Surely all kits had wild dreams of being great hunters or fighters or explorers. Something they wanted to do.
