Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
When Juniperdust was barely out of the nursery, she'd seen a praying mantis consuming her mate.
She'd asked her mother why that was happening, why the mantis would eat a male that meant her no harm. Her mother had responded with some cheery explanation about nature being cruel and inexplicable, and Juniperkit had internalized that, buried it deep in her mind. Her dear, silly mother had soothed her, thinking she was upset, but she wasn't.
Juniperkit had been inspired.
Today, there were no mantises or explanations of how nature worked. Juniperdust knew how the world worked, and she knew that she never wanted to be the poor fool that got their head ripped off in pursuit of desire. Today, Juniperdust sat alone, grooming the short gray fur of her foreleg and wondering idly if she should find someone to patrol with her.
Firepaw was still learning about the world. His parents taught him patiently, lovingly, but he was too young to understand their discipline as what they touted it as. It wasn't helpful. It wasn't going to 'help him become the strong, dependable warrior we know you'll be.' It was unfair, unjust! So what if he left camp without an escort? So what if he happened to find a clanmate in cahoots with a rogue, who then attacked and nearly killed the both of them? So what?!
He was living.
But now, pinned down by glances from a clearly disappointed and overwhelmingly concerned Devotedcrow, and skirting around Orchiddrop's motherly fretting over the scar that was still fleshy and bright pink slipping across his shoulder, he was grounded to camp, which was just salt in the literal wound. He kicked a pebble with his paw, exhaling a ferocious breath out his nostrils, and turned to retreat back to the stupid apprentices' den when he stepped on a fuzzy "SNAKE!!" He yelped, propelling himself sky-high and crashing into Juniperdust, dazed.
Juniperdust found herself knocked off her feet by an apprentice she recognized- Firepaw, the son of the deputy. Born and raised in the clan, she knew all the cats- not just out of neighborly curiosity, but out of a deep desire to be able to understand and manipulate the game of life- and to do that, you needed to know the pawns.
"Oof-" Juniperdust grunted, picking herself off the ground and stifling her irritation with an easy-going laugh. "Careful, Firepaw," she said, glancing over to where he'd come from. "Was it really a snake that you stepped on?"
The taste of blood was like metal in his mouth, the apprentice swallowing hard and taking the moment to shake himself of the dirt now layered through his pelt, but beyond even that was the burning sensation of embarrassment swimming under the surface, hard to ignore and harder to extinguish. "No, it was just someone's dumb tail in the way. I thought warriors were supposed to know better than to be in the way," he spat. The whole situation was his fault---he'd been the one glaring and sulking and putting his clumsy paws wherever, after all---but it'd been a cold day in hell before he accepted fault, especially now.
"Yeah, you'd think they would," Juniperdust said, pushing away the last of her annoyance with a friendly laugh. "But some of us are still just as forgetful as kits. Growing old takes longer than growing up. Why the long face? It can't have just been the snake-tail incident that just occurred. What's eating at you?"
