Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Aspenstar sat in her den, her tail curled around her paws as she waited for the tom to come to her summons. This was their first formal interaction, although the leader had been there the night of his promotion, and they had seen each other in passing since. She had been planning on summoning him to her den since the day she learned that Pinesimmer would be taking him on as an apprentice. She was immediately concerned for NightClan when Pinesimmer chose his apprentice, or StarClan chose it for him, she still was muddied on the details of how exactly they had gotten there other than StarClan having a very sick sense of humor. She had been terrified that they would end up with two Pinesimmers, which was exactly the opposite of what the clan needed. Though watching his interactions with others, Aspenstar felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, NightClan would have one healer that was worth something. They needed it desperately, especially because Phantomfox was not about to let Foxpaw interact with Pinesimmer any more than absolutely necessary.
She was lost in these thoughts when the tom's head poked in her den, and Aspenstar pulled herself out of them to offer him a half-smile. "Jackdawpaw, it's good to finally have a chance to chat." Faith
"You- wanted to talk to me?" Jackdawpaw asked completely stunned before letting out a deep breath, alright, no time to lose his cool. Following Aspenstar's lead he kept up with her, "wow, what an honor, alright what would you like to talk about?"
She couldn’t help but to smile at him; it was kind of endearing to watch him.Her whiskers twitched in amusement as she motioned him forward, pleased that he already had decided to follow. “I want to get to know you a little better, if that’s alright? In return, I will answer one of your questions for every one of mine.”
The two came to the triple falls after a moment. It was the part of the territory it was easiest to tell if there were other ears listening. It wasn’t quite paranoia that her brother would somehow hear of the conversation, but she was going to take proper precautions. Better to be safe than sorry, especially since she was unsure if Pinesimmer had already bent the boy to his will. She hoped she wasn’t already too late, but she had hopes for Jackdawpaw, moreso than say if Roaringpaw had been selected. She had raised the she-cat, but Roaringpaw never quite got over the fact that maybe, just maybe, what Aspenstar and Phantomfox did could been argued to be kidnapping. If Pinesimmer had selected her, Aspenstar had considered that she would have to outsource her medical help.
“But first, before we get to know each other, I’m curious. How are you adjusting to your new role?”
"Yes, that'll be alright," Jackdawpaw replied, trying to act as eloquent and adult as possible in that moment. Because it was ASPENSTAR, AHHHH! Okay, okay, stay cool.
The waterfall mist cooled his pelt as they neared closer, but he didn't seem to pay the scenery much mind. However as Aspenstar spoke he realized that the waterfall backdrop wasn't there to be pretty, but rather to cancel out any outside noise. For spies of course, probably not to kill him. "Oh adjustment has been great. I have a whole bunch of new friends, like Phantomfox and I are tight. We're so close that he would never throw me into a tree. And the apprentices they're all super jealous, they wish they had my life. It's been a pretty incredible experience, yeah," He said with a smirk, "And uhhh, did you adjust well when you were a leader? Like did everyone adore you and automatically obey you kind of a thing? Not tease you or call you a liar and then gang up on you and put you down?"
She smiled at his confirmation, offering him a nod. "Excellent," she purred, before settling to listen to him speak.
"You and Phantomfox are tight?" she interrupted, unable to contain herself. She let out a chuckle. "I can only imagine how that happened." Phantomfox wasn't known for being particularly friendly, afterall. It made sense to her as soon as he said his next words, though. "Ah, yeah, he's prone to a little violence here and there. If you want, I can tell him not to do that again. Trees aren't very comfortable to be thrown into, and if he tries to murder both of you instead of just Pinesimmer, I can see that becoming a real problem." She then realized that maybe that wasn't the most tactful. "Not that he'll try to murder you, don't get me wrong. As long as you don't insult Foxpaw or disrespect me, you'll be fine."
"I'm glad you seem to be adjusting well, though," she meowed, her tone completely earnest. Jackdawpaw didn't know it yet, but Aspenstar had every intention of making him her biggest asset. She had the brains with Larkspur, the brawn with Phantomfox, and she hoped now she'd finally have a reliable medicine cat.
She then tilted her head. "That's a bit complicated to answer," she meowed with a flick of her tail. "I think at the beginning, I was my own biggest foe." She wasn't sure if the tom was old enough to know how she became leader, because time was basically an illusion. "Phantomfox took me aside and said, 'Hey, you're the leader now,' which, between you and I, was one of the most jarring things I've ever heard. NightClan seemed supportive once I got my nine lives, I didn't have anyone telling me I wasn't leader, but I was telling myself I shouldn't be leader. It was a hard transition," she admitted, although she wasn't quite sure that she should be telling an apprentice that. But, whenever she played the question game with other cats, she promised herself that she'd tell the full truth. That was the only way to get other cats to trust you, to be as authentic as possible.
"Oh, well you're the best leader in the entire forest so I wouldn't disrespect you intentionally. Maybe by accidentally talking over you, oh my gosh you were talking, I'll shut up," Jackdawpaw said, his tone a bit more timid and smile less relaxed. Maybe it was the power she had over the clan, but to him there was no cat that stood as tall as Aspenstar. It was sort of the same affect that a bright star in the sky had, she just seemed special. Even among cats that were physically taller than her she just came off with an air of superiority that he found... Gave him unique feelings that he didn't quite understand.
Jackdawpaw nodded proudly, but seemed to look more uncertain as Aspenstar went on. the opposite of all of those things had happened to him. He was just put as medicine cat apprentice and automatically assumed he deserved it, but he didn't have the respect. The other apprentices challenged him, the higher ups in NightClan saw him as a nuisance, no one in the entire clan liked... Him. He felt his throat tighten, that moment before the tears welled up. He hadn't thought about all these memories together before. How his mentor didn't want him, no one seemed to. He always thought he had thick skin, but the realization left him pawing at his eyes to clear away the tears fast. Who cared? He didn't care. He wouldn't let them get to him or else... That would mean he did care.
"Yeah uh, honestly no problems. Um... Do you have lots of friends?" Jackdawpaw asked. He had dreamt of taking a stroll with Aspenstar for forever, but now that he had it he just wanted to get away so he didn't have to think about his place in NightClan any longer. At this point he just needed to get through it so any question that popped into his head had to do.
