It had been seasons upon seasons since he'd set foot in the territory of the league. For so long, memories of a lost love and the further hardening of a heart that had already evolved into a sentient mass haunted the very walls and floors that was Primal Instinct's camp. Now, however, they were in the city; now, they were in his domain. What he wasn't expecting as soon as he roamed close to their chosen land, however, was to meet the warden at the time. What he also wasn't expecting several moons later was to be approached by his now friend and asked if he'd like to rejoin the League, not as a hunter, but as a proxy. To anyone else, it would seem crazy. To Cross, it was just crazy enough.
The black tom looked around himelf at his groupmates. Though he was given times to take breaks from working and allow himself to unwind and relax, he was always vigilant; always watching. They were his responsibility and ensuring they were at the top of their game even when they were at their most relaxed and lazy of times was something he took seriously. Perhaps far too seriously, yet he had not once lorded his power over them unless he was pushed into a situation where he had no other option.
He refused to become a tyrant like Zodiac.

Unlike Cross, Athalia had never a life outside of the league nor did she ever care to. To her this had always been home, where she felt safest. That is, until they had moved into the city. It was far too noisy and busy here for a cat who didn't know what was beyond her own whiskers let alone the source of all the unnatural sounds that emanated throughout the city. her group-mates tried to be reassuring, those who cared to be anyway but the fluffy white she-cat longed to be anywhere but where they were now.
She longed to be back in nature, at the old estate were things were a lot more calm and serene and she didn't have to worry about accidentally walking on the wrong path or getting trampled by the invisible monsters that seemed to roam in these parts. Which is why even on the laziest days Athalia found it nearly impossible to relax, even within the saftey of their camp. All she could do was stare vacantly off into the distance listening for any signs of danger.
Cross sighed inwardly. He sighed outwardly too but he tried to keep it silent. It didn’t work but it was the thought that counted. Granted, he didn’t try very hard, because-
“Athalia,” he looked at the white she-cat that had managed to find herself a few tail lengths away from him, staring vacantly off into the distance, “You’re alright. Nothing will happen to you unless I create it. Go relax.”
Perhaps he’d no longer feel awkward sitting next to the she-cat if she got up and left.

At the sound of her name her clouded lilac eyes landed on Cross, thankfully he wouldn't be able to tell that she was more focused on the red and black vapor that radiated around his form, the only indication that he was even there to begin with. Almost immediately she scolded herself for letting her mask drop in front of the tom. She just couldn't help but instinctively be herself around him. That was a mistake, clearly things weren't relaxed between the two as she would of liked to think. Luckily it wasn't a mistake she intended to make again.
"If I'm the safest with you. Why would I be foolish enough to go somewhere else to 'relax'?" she asked nonchalantly. "Besides, I'm not afraid."
His jaw clenched, even as a spark occurred in crimson eyes. He wasn't expecting his attempt at reassurance to backfire on him. Perhaps it assured her too much. Would a threat have been more affective? Maybe.
"Everyone's afraid of something, whether they admit it to themselves or not. Even gods are afraid of at least one thing on any plane of existence. I admire your attitude, but it's a courage born out of foolishness if you aren't careful." He looked back in front of himself. "You are safe with me for as long as your time ticks on."
He sat in silence for several moments before his curiosity got the better of him.
"You are the only one who hasn't questioned my allegiance to the League."
Going down a path we may never recover from.
"Why?"

"My courage does not come from foolishness but the fact that in this moment I know I am safe." A ghost of a smile graced her lips as he continued what he surely thought was a warning of some kind, though in this case his warning fell on death ears so to speak.
"Is that so? what do you think it is that death fears then?" Genuine curiosity seeped into her voice though from her tone anyone would of thought she already knew the answer to her own question. She let the silence settle between them, in no hurry to receive an answer, even going so far as to sink down to the ground in favor of a more 'relaxed' position when he asked his own question.
"Maybe it's because I know what it's like to be an outlier" she shrugged. "or maybe, it's because I know I can trust you."
Lips that were nearly turned up in the hint of a smile flattened into a line at her query. What do you think it is that death fears then? Crimson eyes dropped down to the ground, clouding over as flashbacks of a time long gone and trauma not yet healed crossed his mind's eye. He lifted his head and glanced at her.
"The world may never know." His tone was teasing, but the truth still lingered in it.
"You shouldn't trust so easily. You hardly know me." He scoffed. "Your naivety will be the death of you."

"You are safe with me for as long as your time ticks on." she retorted, taking on a more playful tone.
"Doesn't that mean my trust in you is not misplaced? At least not where my safety is concerned. I suppose you could still harm me in other ways If I let you." She rolled onto her back, exposing her stomach as if to prove her point. It was a gamble to show so much vulnerability with someone she hardly knew, but at least if anything, she could still see where he was if not him exactly, along with every other living thing so even in her blind state she could defend herself if ever she needed.
"You don't need to worry about me, I'm usually a very keen judge of where I can and can't place my trust. In this case, I'm choosing to trust you, unless you think there's a good reason I shouldn't."
The tom stared forward. If I let you? he mouthed, blinking and glancing over to the side. She was either incredibly confident or absolutely daft. Either one could get her, and possibly himself, killed. He felt a headache growing behind his eyes. He knew he should have stood up and walked away. At this point he had noticed her eyes, seen the milky way they were formed, and understood she was blind. He wasn't sure to what capacity, but given she hadn't turned tail and fled as soon as seeing his eyes and the marks around them, he figured she didn't have much sight if at all. He could get away with it, if she didn't hear him and follow after.
"Do you always talk this much?" He sighed.

"Not at all" she admitted. It wasn't like her to joke around with others like she was doing now, then again, she never had the chance to. The faint smile she wore waivered slightly at the thought but ultimately did not falter simply for the fact she knew he could see her expression, that was if he was even looking at her, still that was a risk she wasn't willing to take.
"I'm surprised you're even still here honestly, you don't have to keep me company."
The tom paused and turned to look at her, blinking slowly. Why was it that after generations, a mere child, a small white she-cat who believed herself so much stronger than she was, caught him by one simple line? He could give any number of reasons, but he knew it was the way in which she allowed herself to be vulnerable. No smart talk, no smirk, no attempt at riling him. It was hollow, and lonely, and there was a lilt at the end like she was trying to come off as lighter than she felt, but he knew the truth.
He felt the same way.
He couldn't recount the days and nights he had slipped into the shadows, allowing his eyes and his bones to be soothed by the cold chill of the dark, and silently wished for companionship, of which he was given none, as they all appeared to be afraid of him. Whether it was the color of eyes, the pattern around them of which he was born with, or the aura he put off. He had spent so many seasons alone, he had forgotten what it felt like to share space with someone.
He had only very rarely experienced what it was like to share space with someone who genuinely didn't spend it for their benefit or to get his hopes up only to use it as a tactical advantage to cause pain.
"...I'm not." His voice was gruff, hoarse, as though he hadn't spoken in ages. He cleared his throat a bit. "I'm not here by obligation to keep you company. I hadn't meant to interact with you longer than to find myself alone again."
He drifted off and looked around in discomfort. "I suppose I've been alone so long, I've forgotten how to be with others."
He glanced at her. "I don't talk much either."

Her ears twitched in surprised but she willed herself to stay still and not roll over to focus on the silhouette of vapor that made him. he wanted to be here, with her. no not with her, just not alone. Still it was rare that others sought her out of their own violation, they only came to her when they had to. She let a few moments of silence will the space between them, in no rush to fill it with words just yet.
Focusing on her conversation with Cross had helped her tune out the overwhelming chaos that constantly went on in the city, and for a moment she truly felt at ease, not having to constantly listening for every sound for her own sake. All she had to focus on was him.
"It's strange for me too, being around others but... this is nice..."
The tom looked away awkwardly, though he found himself silently agreeing with her. It was by no means a comfortable exchange, but it was the closest he'd been with another that wasn't Regulus in... He couldn't remember when.
"Yeah, well." He cleared his throat and shifted his paws a bit. "I think I've spent enough time not doing anything. I think I'll do my rounds, make sure everyone's alright." He glanced at her. "Unless you're on an off day, you could... accompany me. If you'd like." He tilted his head to the side and popped his neck.

She chuckled slightly, a sound so soft it was almost inaudible, rolling over so that she was now right side up. She resisted the urge to tease him, not ready to make light of their interaction just yet, but not wanting the weight of their conversation to drag them down and potentially ruin... whatever this was.
"Sounds like a good idea" she remarked, rising into stretch before reaching her full height, which admittedly wasn't a lot. Admittedly she wasn't keen on venturing back out into the fray of the city but she wanted to prove, now more than ever that she wasn't a helpless kit that needed to be protected at all times.
"You... might have to lead the way" she chuckled nervously, not exactly sure which way was which.
Cross snorted, a sound he normally wouldn't be caught dead making with anyone, but he supposed there was something that transpired after bearing a bit of your soul to another. Still, there were nowhere near being friends, but at least he understood one of his league members a little better. Enough to say they could fight together and he wouldn't immediately think she was dead weight.
"Come on then." He padded forward, already having memorized the unmarked path after countless times tracing and retracing his steps. There wasn't much else to do when you were an outcast, even if you were a higher rank among the rabble. "Let me know if you need to lean on me." He glanced to her out the corner of his eye. "For guidance sake."

The white she cat, followed his movement with ease. Having no problem making him out against the almost otherwise blank canvas that was their surroundings. A genuine smile grace her lips, only for the briefest of moments at the sound of what could barely be considered laughter but, even now she knew that was probably as close as he was gonna get to the real thing.
"Let me know if you need to lean on me." At this she felt the heat rise in her cheeks, why did that make her feel embarrassed? Maybe it was because she'd never thought about touching anyone, and actively went out of her way to avoid it. What would that even feel like? Especially Cross' vapor like aura he gave off. Would he feel warm, or would he be cold to the touch like a shadow? She chased the though away quickly, quickening her pace so that she more or less matched his stride.
The internal affairs proxy watched the roller coaster of emotions flit across her face and turned back toward the front, a huff escaping him as the corner of his mouth curled in a crooked grin. He would've never thought given the spitfire attitude she'd shown earlier she'd wind up a blushing maiden just by offering to make sure she wouldn't fall on her face. She was certainly a strange one, though he found he wasn't particularly bothered by it, rather curious about her, which was new. He wasn't sure if he liked that just yet.
"How are your duties coming along?" He hummed, just to fill the air. Though he would rather complete his rounds in silence, he found himself experiencing an odd sensation: genuinely not wanting their interaction to end. There was concern in his tone as well as his curiosity, however. It was one thing to be new in a group and automatically handed responsibility and placed on a tier higher than the others, which came with its own struggles and need to prove worth. It was entirely another to have grown up in the league your entire life and given power when you struggle to see your way around the world. He found himself slowly getting lost in his thoughts. If she was able to make it as far as she already had, she was made of tougher stuff than he first gave her credit for. Still, he'd rather see her in action. Both for entertainment and to judge whether she would be a worthy battle partner.

"They're fine, I'm trying to work out a new system though I'm not sure how I'm going to put it in motion just yet. I'll be glad to visit the other territories myself, just to get out of the city for a little at least." She didn't want to admit out loud how much she loathed city life and would give anything to go back to their old territory, to her home where she felt at peace, but hadn't she just felt a peace a moment ago with Cross? Despite being in the city? Maybe it wasn't had bad as she was making it out to be. Maybe she just needed time to adjust.
"What about you, how are you adjusting to being back?"
Crosszeria inhaled a deep breath, either to calm himself or to get a read on their surroundings. After all, being in the depths of a conversation could offer up a vulnerability many could use to their advantage. Still, he wanted his fellow proxy to feel at ease and able to enjoy her day off. "It's different." He murmured. "I was a member of this League in a time when the lands were crawling with ghosts and mist and our Nemesis was as intelligent as he was cowardly. I never believed I would return to the city, not after the dissolution of my former gang, but I see you can surprise yourself even this many moons into your life."
He stretched his neck. "I'm deeply grateful to Regulus E'tan for offering me the chance. Perhaps he saw something in me I myself have yet to witness."
With a tilt of his head, "what system are you planning to put in place, if I might ask? Have you never gone outside of the League's borders before?"
