Today dawned warm and bright, a promise of hot weather to come. Crimsonlife stretched as he walked to the camp's entrance, the place where he told Ashenpaw to meet him. He hadn't quite decided on what to do today exactly for training. He never liked the straight forward approach he had gone through as an apprentice, he had more of a mind to do things as they came to them. So with that in mind, he thought he'd let Ashenpaw dictate the course of action for the day.
Likely to her mentor's surprise, Ashenpaw was already at the camp's entrance, pacing circles into the dirt as she nervously ran through scenarios in her mind of their first outing together. She wanted to impress Crimsonlife almost as much as she wanted to impress their ancestors, hoping she would become worthy of carrying on her family's remarkable legacy. She was so deeply wrapped in her thoughts that she failed to notice her mentor, and mindlessly she found herself bumping into his chest. "Oof!" She shook herself and glanced up, her pelt immediately standing on end. Crimsonlife! "Oh, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have been watching my surroundings! I'm really sorry." You're so stupid, Ashenpaw, her subconscious taunted bitterly, the apprentice casting her gaze to the ground as the shame pricked beneath her pelt.

Crimsonlife smiled, amused at Ashenpaw's preoccupation but he knew he had to use this as a teaching opportunity. "No harm done," he meowed, taking a step back. "It's alright to let your guard down inside the camp but you'll have to learn to always stay diligent everywhere else. You can never tell when or where danger may strike. So enough about this," he said waving his tail to change the subject. "I'd like to know what you'd like to do today. I can start your hunting lessons or we can go to the training hollow to do some basic battle techniques. And of course I'll show you around our territory as we do these things."
ooc: I'm going to be away on vacation until July 10th. (I'll be here until this Sunday.) I want to travel light so I decided to leave my laptop at home.
She absorbed Crimsonlife's advice like water in a sponge, committing it to memory and feeling herself begin to relax. She still expected him to chastise her but the anxiety was beginning to peter out. "Oh, I never put much thought into it, but..." She remembered play fighting in the nursery with her siblings, pinning one another down and declaring themselves the victors, and it made her wonder what they would be learning. Crowpaw was a natural. Was Frostedpaw even going to learn defense tactics? "I think I'd like to do some battle training," she finally said, deciding she wanted to be stronger. She wanted to be able to protect her family.

(Thanks! I did! )
A smile slowly appeared on Crimsonlife's face. "I guessed that might be your choice," he replied. Most newly appointed apprentices wanted to learn how to fight most of all. He couldn't recall ever hearing of any wanting to clean out dens or remove ticks from the elders. "Alright then. We'll head on over to the training hollow. But keep attentive along the way. You'll need to learn your way around our territory and right now is a good way to start." Without any more words, he exited the camp and padded on a well worn path that turned toward the east.

"Y-yes sir!" Scrambling, she charged after her mentor, falling into step a few paces behind Crimsonlife. Her olive gaze was flitting rapidly to and fro, trying to take in every last crooked fern and scuffed earth that they passed to identify where they were, but her anxiety was mounting, the memorization seeming impossible. Ashenpaw cleared her throat, trying to distract herself before the intrusive thoughts took control. "Crimsonlife, sir? What did you learn when you became an apprentice? Everything sounds so hard at first..."

"It can seem a bit overwhelming at first but don't let that get you down. It'll get easier. What I wanted to do when I first became an apprentice was to hunt and fight," the redish warrior replied after taking a moment to think. "But that training came a little later. First I spent several days traipsing all over our territory just to learn it which quickly became boring. I wanted to do more than just walk around all over the place." He paused and smiled to himself. "I complained about it to my mentor Ashensnow, and you know what she did?" He didn't wait for a reply from Ashenpaw. "She said, 'If you're so bored with seeing our territory you can just stay in the camp for the next few days and clean out all the dens.' To say the least, I wasn't happy. But to keep matters from getting worse, I kept my mouth shut about it."
The path they were following led to a small clearing. Crimsonlife stepped through the entrance and turned to face Ashenpaw. "Well, here we are. This is the training hollow. You're going to be spending a lot of time here while you're an apprentice."
