The day was a warm one, bordering on muggy even into the night. Fireflies abounded in the empty woods that Moonpaw had been sent to patrol, and an owl was hooting somewhere nearby. On the whole, it was an uneventful night- until the apprentice was flagged down by a tom waiting on the other side of the border.
"Heya!" He called, grinning from ear to ear. "C'mere boy, I won't bite, and I won't cross your little boundary. It's a bugger of a night, isn't it? What's your name?"

(LMFAO glad I actually looked at my notifs for once uwu)
The young tom hadn’t been an apprentice for long, and patrols were still new to him. Actually, he had never been on a solo patrol before;completely on his own, the forest didn’t look the same as it did when he was with his mentor. He didn’t really like it all that much; the night was so silent other than the occasional crow’s call.
The fireflies were new though. He was absolutely fascinated with them, so much he almost forgot he was out here on a mission. So when another cat flagged him down at the border, he peered at the cat curiously rather than chasing them off the border. “Uh hi, I’m Moonpaw, who are you?”
"Moonpaw! Fancy that. You forest cats always have the funniest names. I'm Jasper." The tom, who was tall and leanly muscled underneath his short reddish-brown coat, sat down. There was a bright twinkle in his eyes as he appraised the younger cat. "Sure are glad you're nice. Some of you guys are on edge as soon as you see another cat, which isn't very neighborly in my opinion."
Jasper laughed, revealing a mouth with a few broken teeth. "I'm here to ask about my daughter. She lives with you guys- or at least, I hope she does. Otherwise I don't know where she is. You have a Maia in there? Sweetest, bubbliest little thing? Why she must be around your age- maybe younger?" Jasper's whiskers twitched. "Can't remember exactly when her birthday is."

Moonpaw blinked at the tom. He had assumed most of the other cats around this forest had the same name as he did; he had adopted it mostly to fit in properly. Aleksy wasn't exactly the same as all the names around here, and he didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb. Of course, now that the other cat mentioned it...he probably should be chasing the guy off their territory.
His question made him curious though. "Maia?" he echoed, before shaking his head. He had never heard of that name. Then again, if Bermondsey ever came back, would he have trouble locating him too? "Do you know if...she does by a different name? I mean...my name was Aleksy before I joined the clan...maybe she has a different name now?"
The young apprentice wasn't so sure giving out all this information was smart, but the other cat didn't seem dangerous and he did want to help.
“I left her right here,” Jasper said with a thoughtful frown. “I’d guess this is the clan she’d join. I didn’t stay long enough to see if she got a different name. I guess she might have. I can describe her for you, if that helps.” Honestly he’d thought that the name and brief description would be enough.
“She’s a bit small. Pretty russet stripes. Bright amber eyes. Super bubbly, sweet, darling little thing. I hated that I couldn’t bring her with me, but my friends and I are moving cities and the move would’ve been too much for her.” Jasper explained with a wide smile. “Never met a sweeter soul.”

For some reason, Jasper's story made his chest ache. Wasn't this the same story he had? Bermondsey had told him the same thing, that he couldn't risk his life, nor Evenie's life, because of his pride. That he'd be safer here, rather than following his papa to the end of the earth. He swallowed thickly, trying to push away the sudden onslaught of intrusive thoughts, focusing on the other cat's description.
Everything the other cat described sounded like...Sagepaw? Unless there were still dozens of apprentices he had yet to meet...but really? Sagepaw? There was no way he could be describing her, right? She was the absolute opposite of bubbly. Or darling. Or sweet. Actually, Moonpaw could practically laugh at that. Sweet? Sagepaw? Those two words were practically on opposites of the spectrum.
"I think I might know a cat that looks like that," he replied slowly, "but I don't think we're talking about the same cat. My uh...training partner looks like that but...she's kind of grumpy. Likes to fight everyone. Totally opposite of who you're talking about. Are you sure you left your kit here?"
“Well, plenty of cats look similar…” Jasper said, not pleased by the description. He hated to think his little girl had changed so much since his departure. “I’m sure I left her here,” he said. “I told her to join whatever group took her in. I knew I couldn’t take care of her on the long trip. I knew she’d be better taken care of here. But grumpy… that doesn’t sound like my girl.”
“I can’t see her, because I know she’d want to come. Maybe you talk to her? Tell her I was here and I was thinkin’ bout her. That might fix her moodiness, if your training partner really is her.”

Moonpaw looked skeptical. "Why don't you want her to come?" he asked with a frown. Was this why she was always grumpy? Because she didn't want to be in NightClan? He could see why, and frankly, he was starting to come to this conclusion himself. Still, bringing this up to Sagepaw didn't exactly seem...fun.
"What's your name again?" he asked, just to be sure, "and...I mean, if she's really your Maia, wouldn't you want to tell her something more than just that you're thinking of her?"
"Jasper," he repeated, giving that same broken-toothed grin. "And again, her name before joining was Maia. She'd understand why I didn't want her to come. It's a long trip- we got held up cuz Sammy broke his leg, so I thought I'd check in. Otherwise it'd be months of walking, and she was always a frail little thing."
The next question made him frown a bit. "O'course I love her and all, she knows that. I'd just think she'd like to know I hadn't forgotten her, and that I made sure she was settling in fine with her new home. Like I said- if I spoke to her in person she'd beg to come along, so I'd rather she just know I stopped in."

Frail? He couldn't imagine Sagepaw as frail, but he didn't question the other cat's words, simply giving the cat a nod. In a way, he wondered if Bermondsey felt the same, if he'd ever visit just to see them again, but he pushed the thoughts away. Surely, Bermondsey would come and visit, he thought. Surely the other cat loved him just as much.
Still, he wasn't going to show a stranger this type of emotion. "I'll tell her," he replied, his voice holding a thick line of emotion for a brief moment, before he cleared his throat, smiling at the tom as if nothing had happened, "I'll probably see her grumpy self in a bit anyway. Where are you going to go after?"
“Far away. I won’t tell you, because if she learns she might try to follow, and I really can’t be saddled with a kid right now- even one as cute as Maia.” Jasper’s tail flicked behind him, amusement in his gaze. “But thanks for passing along the message, Moony. I really appreciate it.” The red-brown tom stood, giving the apprentice another nod.
“See you around, kid. If Maia ever gets into trouble, make sure she’s got a strapping young lad like you around to help out. Take care.” And with that, Jasper set off with a cheerful trot, his tail held high behind him.

He frowned. It didn't seem like much help to tell her any of this without giving a definite answer; frankly, he suspected Sagepaw might just kill the messenger too, but he shrugged, giving the other cat a sigh before nodding, and giving him a farewell wave, watching the tom leave before turning tail to return back to the group.
Should he tell Sagepaw, or should he keep this all a secret? He still wasn't sure how she'd react to all of this. Would she get all teary? Or be happy to hear this? Or be angry and lash out at him? She was always an unpredictable one, that was for sure. It didn't take long for him to enter the camp once again, his eyes immediately landing on a russet coloured cat nearby.
Sagepaw was picking the last meat off the bones of a mole when Moonpaw appeared beside her. “Hey Moonboy,” she greeted rather neutrally, her tail tip flicking behind her. Noticing the confused expression on his face, she laughed. “What, you need more hunting help or something? You looked stumped.”

How did he even approach this topic? He shifted his weight from one foot to another, looking rather uncomfortable before deciding to just say exactly what was on his mind.
“I think I met someone who knew you,” he blurted out, his face flushing, hoping she wouldn’t get mad, “uh...some cat was looking for a Maia, and his description sounded like you.”
Sagepaw froze mid-chew, amber eyes locked on Moonpaw with something akin to fear. She hadn't heard that name for months, and the only cats who knew her as that- apart from Aspenstar and some other adults- were her father and his friends.
"What did he want?" She demanded, ears flattening against her skull, her voice carefully, painfully neutral. "Who was he?" It couldn't be her dad, right? It had to be one of his friends. Why would he return? Unless... he was here to take her home? Mixed in with the fear was a strange, strangled kind of hope in her eyes.

He was hesitant. The sudden reaction seemed to truly place what that chance meeting was. Something was at stake but he couldn’t tell what. The look on the other apprentice’s face...it made his chest twist in a weird way. More often than not, he’d admit that he couldn’t care less about Sagepaw; she was annoying, she was overly competitive, she hated him more than he had any sort of feeling for her, yet...the thought of disappointing her made his chest hurt. He’d hate to be the bearer of bad news.
“His name was Jasper I think,” he replied slowly, observing her face, “he...he wanted to ask whether Maia was okay...how she was adapting and all...”
He bit his lip for a moment. “He wanted to say he was thinking of her.”
Sagepaw had to fight to keep the bewilderment and agony from resurfacing on her features. For the most part she succeeded, but the clench of her jaw was too tight and her eyes were filled some strange, wild light. So it was her father, after all. Why had he returned? Was that really all he wanted?
It was excruciating to ask, and Sagepaw didn’t want to hear the answer, but she had to know. “Is he… still there? Was that all he said to you?” Didn’t he want to see her? To apologize, or ask her to come home, or… something?

Moonpaw could see the range of emotions on Sagepaw’s face and if he was honest, the wild look in her eyes scared him. He wasn’t sure what she’d do; was she going to lash out at him? Or worse, cry? He grimaced, looking away.
“I tried asking him where he was going to go,” he admitted, “but he told me you’d follow if you knew. He said he was thinking of you and he misses you and he loves you, but that...this is where he wants you to stay.”
Sagepaw could've screamed. She wanted to. The pain was manifesting tenfold now, wracking her small frame with waves of fire that emanated from her chest. Her father had come back, not to see her, not even to speak to her directly, but just to make sure she was alive and settling in? Talk about the bare damn minimum. He didn't want her to follow, didn't want her with him.
It shouldn't have come as a surprise, but somehow the buried pain had not subsided with time. Now that Moonpaw had dug it up again, it was devastating.
Sagepaw caught the grimace on his face, the dislike of this entire situation written into his features. If she broke down here, she'd be just another burden to someone else. "Good think he wasn't talking about me," Sagepaw said in a faintly strangled tone, a hysterical laugh bubbling from her chest. "My name's Sagepaw, not Maia. Thanks for letting me know about the nuisances at the border, though."
Swiftly she stood, shoving aside the bones of her dinner with a rough swipe. "See you for training tomorrow," she told him, before departing from camp as quickly as she could, disappearing into the trees.

Moonpaw's eyes widened as Sagepaw spoke. He had heard every kind of tone from her, from her snarky comments to her truly angry ones, to even a kind word or two, but this? This was new. He had never seen her look so...hurt, and the moment she disappeared, he simply stared, as if not really believing his own eyes. After a few moments of hesitation, he followed after her, departing the camp for its meadows and forests.
"Sagepaw?" he called out with a frown. She shouldn't be out here on her own so late, and in such a mood too, "Sagepaw, where are you?"
