She wracked her brain for the image of exactly what Sunpaw was referring to when- "The Giant Redwood, right?" It was the largest tree in SummerClan, towering over its dominion, and was situated directly over the Thunderpath, serving as their safe passage to the other side. Not only would it be good shelter, the exhaust of passing monsters would obscure their scents. "Okay, let's go, hurry."
Sunpetal could see the exhaustion making the other stagger the entire way to their destination. She herself was groggy and blurry-eyed, but she didn't let it show, redirecting Sunpaw around briar patches that lurked underfoot, like snakes waiting to be trod on. At last they reached the Redwood and she nosed the apprentice up onto its roots, following suit after she glanced behind her at the impossible darkness. She could only hope nothing had seen them come here.
As she squeezed into the crack after Sunpaw, she collapsed into the crevice, barring the entrance. "We should be safe here," she said, trying to convince herself as much as the other.

She nodded, feeling her paws already going numb from all of that running. She only hoped that they didn't encounter the badger as the sun went down, or worse, something else like a fox or something. She'd hate to have to run once more; frankly she didn't know if she'd be able to make it, exhausted as she was right now. Sunpaw was grateful really, for Sunpetal and her guidance. She would've been badger food or trampled underfoot if not for the other cat.
As they squeezed into the hollow space, she immediately fell to her side, rolling her paws as if to test if they still worked. She had never been this tired before. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly, "you know, after fighting the badger?"
"I'm okay," she breathed, though whether that was true or not was unclear. The adrenaline of their encounter was beginning to fizzle out like carbonation in soda, leaving her numbed and drained in its absence. Tomorrow, she'd be able to gauge the damage done to her muscles, but for tonight she could be strong and worry over Sunpaw. "You think that badger could take me down? I'm going to be the next medicine-cat-turned-leader after all," the humor was faint, shaking, but light.
Sunpetal readjusted uncomfortably; was she avoiding Sunpaw's gaze? The way the apprentice was looking at her with such adoration, it was both pleasant and unnerving, the first time she would experience someone regarding her as not a nuisance. "It didn't get you, did it?"

Sunpaw didn't look all that convinced. "Are you sure?" she pulled herself to her paws, before circling the other cat once, as if checking to see that there wasn't some huge gaping wound that they had missed. When she was finally satisfied, she sat–or more like fell back down–on the ground. Her legs were tired. She felt her ears warm up at Sunpetal's question. It wasn't that she didn't think Sunpetal wasn't capable, but she had never seen a cat fight a badger before, much less a cat who was a garden keeper. The other apprentices always made it sound like only warrior apprentices learned how to fight.
The apprentice shook her head. "No it didn't," she replied sheepishly, "but to be honest, my legs feel like they're going to fall off right about now. I really thought it was going to eat us, you know."
Sunpetal waved her tail at the other's concern. She appreciated the sentiment but sharing in the moment wasn't something she was interested in doing, preferring to dismiss the admission than actually acknowledge it. "I don't think I've ever run that hard in my life," she admitted quietly. Her veins were screaming and she felt like every breath was hard to come by, but there was something addictive about this new, not wholly unpleasant pain burning through her.
"You should try to sleep," she added, "I'll stay up as long as I can. Until I'm sure it won't find us again." If it did, she wasn't sure they'd have the strength or the means to escape it again, not with exhaustion creeping in and no other exit besides another crack further up the tree. She tried to ignore the foreboding sensation coiled in her stomach. "Tomorrow, we can go back to camp or keep trying to find your Bubbie."

Sunpaw seemed like she was ready to argue, but chose not to, her eyes meeting Sunpetal's for a brief moment, before nodding. She couldn't remember ever running so hard either. She was fully exhausted at this point, and as much as she was still nervous about the badger, the tree seemed safe enough.
"We can take turns," she offered with a yawn, "it wouldn't be fair if you stayed up all night and I didn't..."
"Sure," Sunpetal agreed, though she didn't actually plan on waking the other, "but I'll take the first watch, okay? Try and get some sleep."
There was that quiet, invasive concern in her heart for this younger cat, now dependent on her, that she was trying to ignore. Only a few hours prior they'd been bickering over their shared prefix and now if anything happened to Sunpaw, Sunpetal would kill everyone in this forest and then herself. Was this what it felt like to be a mentor? A mother? The vulnerability of it frightened her in a deep, unsettling way, as if in daring to care for someone else she was made weaker for it.
She extracted herself from her thoughts as the other cat drifted to sleep, staring instead out at the void beyond the Redwood's secure walls until she, too, was softly snoring.

As the morning light streamed through the crack in the tree, Sunpaw blinked tiredly, lifting her head as the blinding light crossed her eyes. "Five more minutes..." she mumbled, as she turned around to see Sunpetal...wait, Sunpetal? She blinked the sleep from her eyes, looking around to the little hollow they had rested in.
Right, they weren't in camp. They had been avoiding that badger...that badger? She stood up immediately, before peering out of the little entrance, noticing that the sun was already rising. Why didn't Sunpetal wake her up?
She frowned, looking to the other she-cat, only to notice that she too was sleeping. A small smile appeared on Sunpaw's face, as she moved closer to Sunpetal, lying down next to her. If she couldn't keep watch over the night, she could at least keep watch now.
By time Sunpetal roused, the soft light had sharpened as the day wore on, the sun nearly peaking in the sky by then. She was normally alert and wide-eyed just as soon as she woke, but the events of the previous day left her foggy-headed, confused by the lack of a nest and the tension in her legs. She moved them slowly and uncomfortably as she began to gather her bearings - the wild wind, the nearby knocking of a woodpecker, Sunpaw... Wait, Sunpaw? Sunpaw! The badger!
She glanced around in alarm until she felt the warmth against her flank, glancing over at Sunpaw's ear-to-ear grin, like she was pleased or something. "...How long have you been staring at me like that?"

She blinked, blushing at having been caught staring. She sputtered for a few seconds, before shaking her head. "I wasn't staring for that long," she mumbled, "you just look really...funny when you sleep." She giggled a little. "I think you drooled a little bit."
"A lady never drools," Sunpetal insisted, though she did turn back away. She made a show of sliding into a luxurious stretch, but it was only so she could wipe her jaw against her shoulder fur. Huh, it was wet.
She poked her head out of the tree and glanced around for signs of life. A squirrel chattering away on a branch somewhere above them squeaked, dropped the acorn it'd been whittling away at onto Sunpetal's head, and scurried further up. "I think the coast is clear, Sunpaw," she grumbled, stepping out fully to rub her head.

Sunpaw giggled at that, her sparkling eyes indicated that she thought differently. She emerged out of the tree quickly after Sunpetal did, her eyes squinting at the sudden daylight. The world was washed in a warm golden light, as if nothing had happened and it was just another day. In the light, everything looked safer than it did in the dark, that was for sure.
"Do you think it's safe to head back to camp?" she asked.
She set her paw down and cast a final cursory gaze across the scenery, but the only danger she could see were the stinging nettle stalks. "Yeah, I think so, but make sure you don't brush those plants over there," she advised, gesturing to them. "That's nettle and it'll give you an uncomfortable rash for days." A vivid memory from her apprenticeship resurfaced, one where her sister had tumbled into a patch of the plants and itched all over for a moon, and elicited a giggle.
"Come on," Sunpetal urged, guiding them back the way they'd come- with a wide berth given to the clearing they'd crossed the badger in. They chattered endlessly most of the way until the older she-cat emitted a gasp, bouncing forward to crest a small rise, and hurriedly called the apprentice over to her. "Look, Sunpaw, you'll get to try some sunflower seeds after all!" A tapestry of bold-faced blooms faced towards them and the rising sun behind them, swaying slightly in the breeze.

Sunpaw's eyes were wide with a sudden interest at Sunpetal's words. "Where?" she asked brightly, bounding after the garden keeper, "I want to try them!"
"Come on!" Sunpetal took off and disappeared into the field of yellow. By the time Sunpaw would catch up, she had found a head full of seeds and was using a claw to pluck the seeds off several at a time. "Here, take one and crack it open between your teeth."

She nodded, taking the seed in her mouth and crunching down on it, splintering the seed only to leave the soft white core of it left, as she spat out the rest of the outer shell with a grimace. "The shell tastes gross," she complained, wiping her tongue with her paw.
