What was the deal with this? Did mothers love her so much, they just had to name their kits after her? Sunpetal should have been flattered, but in truth she wasn't a big fan of sharing a name with anyone, especially since there was no conceivable way anyone else could measure up to the legacy that was becoming hers. She'd hoped she wouldn't run into this problem again after finally getting rid of the last imposter, but now there was another louder, spunkier mini-her rampaging through her camp. She couldn't stop herself from glaring daggers at where Sunpaw bounced around, not even when the apprentice caught her eye.

Sunpaw was either oblivious or completely aware of Sunpetal's green-eyed gaze, but she found herself prancing around the camp without a single worry. She didn't particularly care for any cat's...distaste of anything really. Ghostkit had found her annoying but she had convinced him to sneak out. Howlingheart fretted plenty but she still wormed her way into his heart. Surely, if this taught her anything, it was that getting what she wanted wasn't nearly as hard as she thought.
Still, the other cat staring at her made the hairs on the back of her neck fluff out, and frankly, it was a bit...weird. To be stared down like some display. Giving Sunpetal a strange look, the young apprentice seemed to mirror the gaze, though it was fraught with confusion instead. "What are you looking at?" she peered curiously.
Another cat might have feigned innocence, but Sunpetal took Sunpaw's eye contact as a direct challenge, an invitation for her to assert her authority. "I'm looking at you, maggot! You don't think you can replace me, do you? Because I have another thing coming for you if that's what you think kid." Although, for Sunpaw to have any idea about replacing her, she would first have to know anything about the Garden Keeper, and that was unlikely because Sunpetal could count on one paw the amount of times she'd visited the nursery since her apprentice ceremony, even once her mother became pregnant with her younger siblings. She honestly had no clue the other she-cat even existed until she'd been promoted.

Sunpaw's expression scrunched up into a look of confusion. What in the world was this cat even talking about? She didn't know this cat at all, and this was the first conversation they were having. She blinked owlishly at the other cat. "Uh...." she took a glance to the left, and then to the right, "are...you talking to me?"
A sheepish laugh left the little she-cat's mouth, chuckling nervously, "who...are you? Why would I want to replace you? Am I...supposed to replace you?" What was going on?
Sunpaw could probably see the millisecond in which her last nerve snapped. Sunpetal's eye twitched. "Are you...supposed...to replace...ME?! You wish you could replace me, kid---but NO! I am clearly the superior Sun and you could only hope to one day be as beautiful, confident, and amazing as me!!" There was a little irony in how aggressively she asserted her confidence, in doing so exposing a deeply buried insecurity about someone else coming in and outshining her.

The apprentice took a step back, wide-eyed. "Uh...." she grimaced, looking kind of freaked out, glancing around as if wondering whether they were causing a scene. "I mean...I wasn't trying to replace you? Sorry?"
She gave an awkward laugh. "You know we don't really even look like each other," she pointed out, "so there's no way anyone would think I'm you...you're safe from having a twin! Yeah! We have different coloured eyes!"
She leered down at the apprentice in a very i-want-to-chew-you-up-and-spit-you-out sort of manner, but something Sunpaw said seemed to placate her. "I guess we don't," she allowed, only just. It was clear they looked mostly different; although mostly the same colors, Sunpetal's golden fur was more sparse than Sunpaw's, tinting the area around her eyes and threaded throughout her tail. "Fine. I accept your apology, but I'm not calling you Sunpaw. You can be...Goldie. 'Kay, Goldie?"

Huh, what a weird cat, Sunpaw thought. "You know, you guys were the ones who gave me the name Sunpaw," she pointed out with a frown, "that wasn't even my real name! They said it'd help me uh....fit in. It's not my fault they gave me the same name as you, maybe you should take it up with the leader."
She shrugged. "My real name was Evenie," she pouted, "at least call me that instead of goldie. I'm not a goldfish!"
"Well the leader is my dad, so I will." In fact, she already intended to just that, especially now that it was revealed Ratstar was the culprit behind this injustice. She flicked an ear. "Evenie is a weirder name than Goldie. Why would you wanna be called that?" Rogue-styled names weren't her forte nor did she particularly like them, preferring the way clan names flowed together and she often liked to imagine future warrior names for the kits she didn't plan on having. She didn't mean the question to come off as rude or insulting as it did, but Sunpetal's curiosity didn't always translate in a way others understood.

Sunpaw scowled. "Whatever, it's not like Sunpetal's that much cooler," she pointed out with a huff, "I bet I'll have an even cooler name than yours, and you'll be even more jealous than you are right now!" Sunpetal was such a weird cat, she thought, surely someone should've taught her to be nicer to strangers.
"Sunpetal," she emphasized, "doesn't need to be a cool name because it's beautiful and elegant." She spoke slow enough for Sunpaw to understand because if the apprentice was going to insist that any name could outshine hers, then she must not have been the brightest star in Silverpelt. "Maybe you'd could be Suneve or maybe Papi will pull something like what he did with Devotedcrow, name you Eveningsun. That would be pretty." Not as pretty as Sunpetal, but at least we wouldn't share the same name, her eyes seemed to say.

Sunpaw shrugged. "Yeah yeah, whatever miss petal," she replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief. This cat was fun to rile up after all. Sunpaw's little innocent face still peered at Sunpetal as if she didn't know anything, playing the young naive kit as usual. "I want something cooler than Suneve or Eveningsun...though I guess Eveningsun sounds a little bit like my old name."
She giggled. "Why did Ratstar name you Sunpetal anyway?" she asked, "and why is Ratstar's name Ratstar? I don't get it."
"Obviously because it's pretty like me," she scoffed. Seriously, what did this apprentice not get about her name? Her ginger markings were warm like the gentle sunbeams streaking acorss them, and her billowing fluff resembled clouds drifting overhead, tying together the perfect moniker for SummerClan's princess. But as Sunpaw posed her following question, Sunpetal did pause to consider it, brow furrowing. "I'm not sure why Papi's name is what it is. I never asked Grampy Roach, but they were from Twolegplace and he is kinda scruffy like a rat, don't you think?"
Her curiosity, now that they were discussing the reasons behind their names, roused. "So why do you think you were called Evenie? What's it like having multiple names?" She'd only ever had the one, which she would carry with her for life, even if it did have alterations throughout her life. She couldn't imagine changing it completely.

Sunpaw giggled. "Grampy Roach?" she had no idea what that meant but it was a funny name, and she couldn't help but feel a sort of amusement when hanging out with–and inadvertently annoying–Sunpetal. Now that Sunpetal mentioned it...yeah, she could see where the other cat's name came from. Rat-like wasn't exactly a compliment though, so she kept her thoughts to herself lest someone leaked to the man™ what she had called him.
"I'unno," Sunpaw shook her head, "my momma gave me the name but she left before I could remember anything...though papa said it was a pretty name for a pretty kit like me! We met our sister once, she was older than us, you know? She was really cool! I dunno where they are but I'm sure they're doing fine...to be honest no one else other than papa and my brother called me Evenie so I guess it feels like a nickname now." She was just babbling on, as if her mind was afloat in her own memories.
Sunpetal was surprisingly silent throughout the reverie Sunpaw was regaling her with, the talk of all the distant relatives in her family something she found rather curious. Of course, she knew she had some older siblings somewhere---DayClan, her mother might have mentioned once---but they also weren't her siblings, in the technical sense. They never came to visit and had their own family. "Your papi and brother just left you here?" she asked. That didn't seem like something family did; she was confident in knowing Ratstar would move mountains before he let them stand between him and his kits, and even more unbelievable to consider was not having Weevilspike around. She and her brother were practically inseparable. "Do you miss them?"
Somewhere within herself, in a portion of her heart Sunpetal would deny existed, a twinge of compassion for this imposter bloomed.

Sunpaw didn't even realize that her ears were drooping, but the thought of Aleksy made her chest ache. They had been a family for a little while, the two of them and papa and even auntie Charlotte...or well, she was her sister. Sister Charlotte. It was...nice. She never really got an explanation; one night she was sick and feeling as if she was on death's door and the next, she was here and they were gone. Did they even know she was alive? Did she die and come back to life? There were so many questions.
She didn't notice that her eyes were a little damp, and with a paw, she swiped across her face, erasing all signs of the sadness that had crossed her features. "I...I wish I knew where they went," she admitted with a pout, "maybe they think I'm dead."
Ah crap, now she was really feeling things for this sad sack. It'd be so much easier if she could lean more apathetic, but unfortunately being raised by a bleeding heart father who cried over cute things didn't lend itself well to apathy. Sunpetal frowned, and before she could really think about what she was about to suggest, she heard herself ask, "Well, why don't you go find them? I mean, I would have to go with you, of course, can't let an apprentice run off by herself, but maybe they won't be too far? What if they've been in FallClan or SpringClan this whole time!"

Sunpaw seemed to stare at Sunpetal for a few moments, as if wondering why she'd be offering to go with her. This she-cat didn't seem to like her much in the first place, but hm...did she misread the signs?
"Maybe," she replied, unconvinced, "I feel like they wouldn't have settled down so close...or why wouldn't my brother be here too, you know? They're probably pretty far away by now. All I know is my papa told us to stay away from the city."
"Huh, I guess you're right," grumbled the older Sun, allowing herself just this once to be wrong--something the younger one wouldn't get to see very often otherwise. It was just to make her feel better, obviously.
Sunpetal gave it a moment more of thought, relying on the things her Papi had taught her over the course of her apprenticeship. He'd explained that, though the most interactions she would have would be with the other Mountain Clans, there were others beyond the ridges, cats that lived in the lower woodlands and those who never settled in one place for long and even some that crawled around underground, like worms under the earth. They were all far, but what was a little adventure in the grand scheme of things? Besides, she was a fully fledged Garden Keeper--chosen by StarClan--training to be SummerClan's first Garden Warrior! Surely, if anyone could handle it, Sunpetal could.
"Well," she said at last, whiskers shivering, "Papi told me a group called Primal Instinct lives near the city, so he's probably not there, huh? No one ever knows where SwiftClan is. So the only other option is.... uhhh... those other four clans." She nodded wisely. "Whatever they're called. I hear Devastatedcrow talking about how bad SunClan is a lot--although Raystrike talks about how good it is, so who's to really say?--and MoonClan is...just as crazy. That just leaves two, unless you think your bubbie is one of them tunnel-cats."

"What's a tunnel cat?" she frowned. There were still so many things she didn't know; Sunpaw was still so green to this world, unaware of what the rest of the territories held other than the places they had journeyed and the land she now lived in. She bit her lip in thought. "They always said they wanted to head north...I think Charlotte said they used to live in a big forest...so maybe they went somewhere with a forest?" SummerClan was the exact opposite of a forested land, but that didn't matter. She had always wanted to see where the trees covered the skies and the waters fell from the heights.
