Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
There was something about the crisp breeze that cut through the otherwise warm air that made Bloomingpaw want to go out on what others would call a horrible day. Gray, nearly black clouds gathered overhead diluting the sun's light but did little to actually lower the temperature, of this unusually warm day. The scent of rain lingered in the air and the ginger and white she cat could only hope that the sky would open up on a down pour. To her that was something thrilling and exciting about a summer storm though part of her was hesitant to be caught in it, after spending most of the morning weaving just the right amount of lavender and violets into her long fur. To ruin this work of art would be devastating to her, but these flowers weren't going to hunt and pick themselves.
Okay, so she was meant to be hunting prey but with the weather taking a turn would send all the prey back to their nest to wait out the brewing storm. Giving Bloomingpaw plenty of opportunity to be doing something she actually wanted to be doing. Would Whitestone be annoyed with her? Yes. Did she care? Also yes.. and even now as the guilt of her procrastination pricked at her fur she couldn't actually bring herself to change her course of action.
Jayjack was less than enthusiastic about the stormy weather overhead and his only consolation was that it was raining yet. He wasn't looking forward to being out on the prowl once the downpour started, he'd rather be curled up inside of his nest listening to the other warriors exchange battle tales, but he had a job to do out here, and he wasn't going to be able to rest until it was done. The last time the clouds covered the sky, Rabbitrun had died, and he was determined that no other cat would be lost to the cold this summer.
He was nearly finished with his sweep, satisfied that most of the clan was headed back to safety and that the remaining warriors were old enough to know how to look after themselves, when he spotted one last young cat ahead of him. Suppressing a sigh when he realized who it was, the Aurulent drew himself up and marched over to her.
"Bloomingpaw, the storm will be hitting soon," Jayjack commanded briskly, his sharp gaze cutting into her. "What are you doing out here alone?"
The apprentice nearly fliched out of her fur, with a startled yelp as she spun around to face the Aurulent who had some how managed to sneak up on her not a good look she inwardly chided herself, before forcing herself to meet the older cat's gaze. If she was being honest, lying definitely wasn't a strong suit of hers. Dandelionpaw had, no was far better at it than her and though it hurt to think about in this moment her mind scrambled to find the words her sister would of used if she were here.
"O-oh! Hi Jayjack... I was um.. out looking for prey like Whitestone told me to." She did her best not to visibly cringe at her own words, if she couldn't believe them there was no way Jayjack would buy them either.
"or... I was trying to anyway.." she added meekly.
"And I suppose you were weaving flowers into your fur for camouflage?" He stared her down for several long seconds of silent judgment before he went on tersely, "then your mentor is a fool for sending you out in this weather. Next time he gives you an order to go out in a storm, you come to tell me, understand?"
Jayjack doubted she was being honest, but he made a mental note to check in with her mentor anyway.
"No, I did that before I left camp" she blurted out. Okay, not the wisest thing to say in the moment but, if there was one thing she prided herself on it was her appearance, and she was about to let anyone, not even an aurulent shame her for the one attribute she actually liked about herself. Though he did have a good point about the camouflage...
She shook her head swiftly to clear it, in an attempt to stay focused on what Jayjack was saying, and she knew she should feel bad for getting in trouble and part of her did sure, but she couldn't see where she was in the wrong here.
"But it's not even raining yet" she protested. tilting her head up at the darkened sky, admittedly she hadn't been here the last time a storm had passed though the territory and had no idea why Jayjack cared so much other than the fact he enjoyed telling others how to do their jobs.
"Besides if it floods and we come back emptied paw'd it might be a few days before we see prey again so, it's not a good idea to stop hunting now."
"Bloomingpaw," he growled, straightening up as he glared down at her. "You should not be out here hunting during storms, not alone. If you waited for the rain to start, it would already be too late. Do you understand me?"
Jayjack had some tolerance for her behavior when she was following a bad order. He had much less now that she was arguing with him. The only reason he didn't eviscerate her was that she had a point: the clan did need prey.
"I appreciate you looking after the clan, but your job right now is to train. Let the adults handle the rest."
Unveiled skepticism gleamed in the she-cat's eyes as she regarded Jayjack. Let the adults handle this? she didn't see how a warrior would fair any better in this storm than an apprentice especially after having so recently lost both Maria and Rabbitrun, under unusual circumstances. A small frown settled on the she-cat's expression as she regarded the aurulent's enraged expression. She'd be surprised if he actually lifted a paw to hurt her, but that didn't mean he wasn't frightening in his own right. And she was, frightened of him in that moment but, she refused to show it, not even letting her whiskers tremble in betrayal.
"I still don't-" The young cat started to protest again, only to be cut off by a clap of thunder, so loud she couldn't hear her own voice over the noise. She didn't even have time to flinch before a curtain of rain began cascading down on the two cats, rendering them soaked in a matter of seconds. Even now Bloomingpaw didn't slump or concede her point, however the defiant gleam in her eye was replaced with guilt as her gaze darted around their surroundings, either looking for the fastest way back to camp or the nearest place to take shelter.
Her defiance only pissed him off further, and she was lucky that the thunder interrupted them before she could cross that line any further. Jayjack wasn't going to argue with an apprentice on the best of days, and certainly not after everything that had happened. One cursed storm had killed Rabbitrun, stolen Maria, and nearly killed Crownglass as well when he was struck by lightning. Maybe it was just luck they all went missing at the same time. But maybe it wasn't.
The tabby growled lowly as he lifted his head against the rain, his ears pinning back against the noise. Great. "This way," he ordered, spinning around and stalking toward the camp with his tail lashing. The rain was coming down hard, but if they were going to find shelter along the way, he wanted it to be closer to the camp instead of further away.
This time she didn't argue with him. At least for the next few minutes she wouldn't provoke the tabby any further, at least not intentionally. Though, by the look of how tense he was she was sure his distain for her only increased with every drop of rain that hit his pelt. Bloomingpaw kept her head down as she trailed behind him. Partly in shame and partly because she could hardly see beyond her own nose with how hard the rain was coming down. She wanted to apologize but she doubted it would be well received with how angry her new companion seemed to be.
"Maybe we can take shelter in some tree roots near by" she shouted over the downpour. With how big some of the trees seemed to be here it wouldn't be hard to seek refuge in the roots or find an alcove somewhere.
Within seconds the rain plastered his fur flat to his broad shoulders and he was cold despite the warm air that had once surrounded them. He led the way on with his ears back, trying hard to think about where they should take shelter, but he couldn't stop the distracting thoughts tugging at his mind. Had Rabbitrun sought someplace to hide when she ventured out into the storm? Did she think she was safe, only to find herself snared? Was she cold and freezing from the rain when she finally gave up the struggle?
Jayjack's steps slowed without his consent and he couldn't shake the image of her from his mind. Not until Bloomingpaw spoke again. The tree roots? He stared blankly around them, waiting for his mind to catch up and realize what she was talking about. Shelter. They could wait out the storm between the roots.
"Good idea," he yelled back, and shaking his head firmly, turned to weave through the roots and look for some place big enough for the both of them.
Bloomingpaw was small, though it wasn't until her plumy fur was slicked to her sides with rain that it was obvious how small she actually was. The rain didn't really seem to bother her too much, as she hurried alongside the tabby warrior. She had been reckless, not just now but ever since she ran away from home to join FallClan, she had never told Lionblood why exactly she'd fled to the mountains in the first place, in truth even she wasn't sure. That or, she wasn't ready to face the truth herself yet. The image of her parents' still bodies briefly flashed in her mind and she shook her head briskly to get rid of it.
She quickened her pace, just enough to barely get ahead of Jayjack, only in an attempt to help find a stop in the massive roots, she was even willing to dig in the mud to make room if she had to. It was the least she could do for getting them into this mess. The prissy sje-cat did her best not to outwardly grimace at the sensation of mood squishing between her toes as she dug into it with her claws. It took only seconds for her white paws to be stained brown, and she let out a groan of discontent, knowing full well it was going to take ages to groom herself properly again once this was all over.
Despite being a few steps ahead of him and the first one to start digging, by the time Jayjack was at her side, Bloomingpaw had not made much progress. He knelt down to work beside her, his broad shoulders flexing as he pulled aside the mud and caked it to the tree roots walling them in. It was difficult work; rivulets of water threatened to disrupt their progress and deposit the mud back where it back, but another firm press held it in place, and with time the hole was big enough for them both.
Unceremoniously shoving the apprentice deeper into the cleft, Jayjack huddled in front of her, mostly escaped from the rain though far from dry. Rain still poured over the edge of his back when he shifted to look back at her, but he ignored it, focused for now on the apprentice. "Digging was a smart choice," he acknowledged gruffly, "if slow. Did you injure any of your claws?"
