Brindlemist's pregnancy had been miserable. From beginning to end she only grew sicker and sicker to the point where she could hardly make it out of the medicine cat's den to make dirt before she lost her balance. This was well beyond morning sickness, but that's what she and everyone else called it, seeing as there was no other explanation for her sudden shift in health outside of her pregnancy.
At least Garsparkling, Roseshade and Robinring were there to help her every step of the way, so at no point was she sad or depressed. No, even at her worst she smiled and purred and made sure everyone else was at ease... which unfortunately was not something she could do now.
"Sister, tell Garsparkling to leave..." Brindlemist's voice was barely a whisper, but Roseshade's ear was near, she'd be able to hear it. So far two kits had been delivered, both of which seemed to be doing well despite their mother's condition, "... I..." She struggled to say, even speaking was consuming too much of her energy, "... Please."
It was clear that something was wrong. The last kit was either stuck or Brindlemist didn't have the strength to continue, maybe both, which meant that there was only one option. The same one that Littlestar had had to choose when facing down a certain she-cat who Roseshade did not know she was named after.
Roseshade was curled up around her sister, gently grooming behind her ears in a futile attempt to soothe her. Two of the kits had already been born, but the last one was taking far to long. She had already sent for Amberbird when things began to go south, but the medicine cat had yet to appear. She was the closest to her sister, her paws gently massaging her sides in an attempt to get the contractions going once more "Garsparkling" she replied, lifting her head and looking to her sister's mate "I need you to help find Amberbird, I need her here" she commanded trying not to betray just how serious things had become, but it was like trying to hold together shattered glass with pieces of tape. Panic written all over her features
She didn't wait to see if he left, her attention soley on Brindlemist. She had given her all the herbs that she knew might help, arranged the crystals, and nothing seemed to be helping. She felt so helpless, forced to watch the life fading from her sister's eyes. The two of them were alone now, and for once Roseshade began to pray....Her voice so soft, she wasn't sure even Brindlemist would be able to hear her
"Lord Borealis... I know that I have sinned, but please save Brindlemist. She is my sister, the only blood family I have, she is my world. Don't punish her for my actions, I will do anything. Take me instead, make me your servant, I'll even accept Robinring if that's what you ask of me... Just don't take her" Roseshade was crying now, burring her nose into her sister's fur, this time speaking al little louder "Don't leave me Brindlemist, Amberbrid will be here soon. Just stay strong, I'm here with you"
Garsparkling gazed at his mate, stricken. Roseshade wanted him to leave? Now, while his mate was-- when there was a chance, by the time he made it back, she would be-- that she could-- Terror froze his paws to the ground. He couldn't leave his family right now. Someone had to get the prisoner, but did it really have to be him? Another cat could go, he just had to find them first. He had to go find them. He drew in a sharp, shuddering breath, and, pushing away his darker thoughts, nuzzled his kits goodbye for the first time and stumbled from the den.
He took a deep breath of fresh air as Robinring appeared at his side. The handsome tom had been pacing outside the den, listening to the scream of his best friend in silence, and one look at the new father confirmed what was going on inside the den. The pair darted across the camp to the prison and Robinring descended swiftly into it, finding Amberbird and nudging the tom toward the entrance.
"It's Brindlemist," he murmured into the medicine cat's ear. "Roseshade is losing her."
Now that Brindlemist and Roseshade were alone, the dilute tortoiseshell she-cat dropped the little bit of resolve she had left and tears began to pool at the corners of her eyes. She couldn't move her body much at all but managed to lick the patch of Rosehade's fur that was closest to her, interrupting the witch's murmuring and casting an uneasy silence in the den, one even the newborns somehow new to respect.
"My heart is so full, Roseshade," She began quietly, her voice raspy from her earlier screaming, "I wouldn't change any part of my life, truly, I couldn't be happier. My only regret is the burden I'm leaving on you..."
She tried to shift herself so she could face Roseshade, but she was unable to do so. Instead, she rested her face against her flank, somehow purring despite her pain and weakness. Anything to help sooth her sister.
"Please help Garsparkling raise them. My dream is that they will grow to love you as we did Fervidsummer. Like a mother. My mate has so much love to give but I'm afraid he'll be hopeless without me, you know how he is, haha..." That was why she had sent her mate away - She didn't want him to know that she was worried about him. Perhaps it was selfish of her, or maybe cowardly, to not face it head-on, but she just couldn't bring herself to leave him thinking she doubted him even in the slightest, "... And also... Please give Robinring a chance. He's proven he has a good heart, and I trust he will be there for you since I cannot be..."
Another contraction came, causing Brindlemist to gasp in pain, after which she did not speak again for a long while. She was deep in fevered thought, and she could feel her presence was beginning to slip. She didn't have much time left.
"I'd like to see Garsparkling now, and Fervidsummer, I know she's not far. I'll only be a moment... then you and Amberbird can do what you need to do to save my last kit."

There was nothing else to be done. Her sister was to weak, with every heartbeat she was fading. Even the most experienced of healers wouldn't be able to bring her back from this precipice, the damage had already been done "Anything for you" she promised her eyes closing as she pressed her forehead to Brindlemist's, gently placing her paws on top of her sisters the way they always had since they were kits whenever they were scared, and she was. Roseshade was petrified, more scared than at any other point in her life. Even when she had felt her own life slipping away as she lied at the bottom of the icy river, it didn't compare to this. Her sister had always come first. Her whole world centered around trying to protect her from harsh realities, to gain enough power to keep Brindlemist safe "I will make sure your kits are taken care of, and love them like they were my own" she knew Brindlemist would be able to feel her tears on her cheeks, but there was no holding them back
"Brindlemist, I have been blessed to call you my sister. My best friend..." she paused, she couldn't do it. She couldn't say goodbye, admit to herself that this would be their last moments alone in this life. That this would be the last time she would be able to hold her sister like this. The last time she would get to say these words "I love you..." she reluctantly pulled away, walking stiffly towards the entrance where Garsparkling and Fervidsummer stood.
Roseshade's fur was disheveled and matted with her sister's blood. Her eyes swollen and red from crying "Go, she wants to see you... She doesn't have long" she took few steps away from the entrance as the two of them disappered inside, before emptying the contents of her stomach onto the newly fallen snow.
Amberbird was startled out if sleep by Robinring, so much so that he shot into the air and away from the tom, not even processing the words. Terrified, he began to shake, sure this cat was here to harm him. The medicine cat had scratches and bruises form a guard early in the week, one start still ached as he moved. “Plea-please! I didn’t didn’t do anything!” He just wanted left alone cleft to wallow in his pity and anxiety and ache for the days of his life back in the kitty pet nest.
Frevidsummer had followed Robinring to the prison. She’d been outside with him, anxious and when he’d left she’d followed. The she-cat had interacted with the ex-FallClan cat a few times and knew he would react badly to being startled, just as Frigidpaw does. So carefully she judged Robinring back and locked eyes with the tom. “Amberbird. It’s me, Frevidsummer. You remember me right? We’ve talked a few times?” She waited for him to repent before stepping closer, inching and careful but still with her normal calming, open smile. “My daughter, Brindlemist, she’s kitty ha bad Roseshade need story help. Please, we need to hurry.”
Robinring flexed his jaw, debating if it was better to drag the tom kicking and screaming out by his scruff or talk him down. Fervidsummer preferred the latter approach, but he was still debating as he circled around the pair.
Garsparkling darted back into the den the instant he was allowed, and one look at the pale queen broke him. He forced a smile, twisted and weak, across his face. "Heyy, do you always have to be so dramatic? I told you, you're a thorn in my side, and- you know, you're just, always being a pain," he sniffed, whatever joke he was stringing along falling to shambles. The truth was, Garsparkling didn't know what to say. Did he pretend she wasn't dying? Did he tell her he loved her?
He laid down in front of her, resting his chin on her forepaw and staring up at her.
With kind and soft words, Frevidsummer was able to get through to Amberbird quicker than just retching him from the prison and taking off with the smaller tom. He may only be just bigger than an student, but he deserved the respect of a medicine cat even if he was a prisoner. With focused eyes, in game mode if you would, Amberbird hurried out of the prison on the familiar path he was used to towards the healer’s den. Frevidsummer right in his tail, nudging him off towards the nursery. Help was kn it’s way, she only prayed it was soon enough.
Brindlemist's pained gaze softened as she say Garsparkling's goofy, forced smile. She didn't have enough strength to return his gesture so instead she let out a weak, pitiful purr, "I love you, Garsparkling. I wish... I had said that more. You'll be a great father... and Roseshade will be there to help... since I cannot."
Her breath was very ragged, her sentences having strange breaks and pauses. She had given up her physical fight and instead put all of her energy into her final message, although now that it was time she didn't know what else there was to say. I'm sorry? Goodbye? Nothing fit, it was too sad, she couldn't stomach more of that, not with her dear, pure-hearted mate.
Another teardrop fell down the side of her face.
"Garsparkling... Don't be afraid... to fall in love again..." She finally murmured, her voice barely more than a whisper. She was struggling to keep her eyes open as a deadly drowsiness was beginning to take root. Cleaver

Roseshade couldn't bring herself to go back inside the den, her stomach churning to the point of pain. All she could do was curl up into a little ball, trying to push away all of her emotions to prepare for what she needed to do next. Her sister had made it clear, that she was to do whatever was necessary to save the kits inside of her. But how was she going to get them out? She didn't have the answers, but Amberbird would... She could only hope that her mentor made it here quickly, that Robinring had found him in time. For once, she had to put her trust that he had done what she had asked.
"Yeah, sure," he sniffed, it was impossible for any other cat to like him in that way, there was something deeply wrong with Brindlemist that had enabled them to be together and now she was gone, and he was alone. "I love you too. I love you," he insisted, staring at her unmoving body, and swallowed hard. Was she finally gone? He should cry, right?
He couldn't bring himself to do it. He just felt hollow. Garsparkling sniffed once; rose in silence to step out from the den and shake his head mutely at the gathered cats; stepped back into the den to pull his kits away from his mate and curl around them himself. Maybe tears would come later. Maybe later it would hit him, but as he lay with his back to his lover, he felt only a tenuous nothingness.
Robinring led the way back with Fervidsummer and Amberbird close behind. They came to a halt outside of the nursery and he moved quietly to Roseshade's side, sitting beside her with his tail tucked nearly over his paws, just far enough away their fur didn't brush. "You've done all you can," he murmured. Prepared to go on, he was interrupted by Garsparkling's exit and closed his eyes when he saw the signal. Brindlemist was gone. He let out a breath, then opened his eyes again and stared hard at Amberbird. "You need to go deliver her kits, or teach Roseshade how," he ordered flatly.

Roseshade didn't respond to Robinring, to nauseous to speak without vomiting again. She closed her eyes willing the world to stop spinning, even as Garsparkling emerged. It could only mean one thing... Her sister was gone, and there were still kits left inside of her that needed to get out. She began to shake, knowing what it meant. But could she find the strength to do what had to be done?
She heard Robinring's words, but they were wrong. She should have sent for Amberbird earlier. Paid more attention during her pregnancy. Something... anything....Cleaverpao
Amberbird wasn't listening though, he'd not even paused to check on Roseshade or when Garsparkling had exited the den briefly. He was in the zone and swiftly stepped into the den to tend to his patient. It was clear who it was, the cat who wasn't breathing. The kits would have to wait, he thought as he glanced over at them and the new father curled around them. Behind him, Frevidsummer had followed the tom in, tears already streaming down her face in disbelief. Whispers of no, no it can't be, no her, leaving her lips over and over as she cried. She'd lost a daughter and had no idea how to handle that. But Amberbird didn't have time for her, Frevidsummer was no use to him in tears. "Roseshade!" It was the first and only time he'd ever yelled for her, or even spoken in a commanding tone, his true colors and ranking of a medicine cat showing through. He waited, just long enough for her to poke her head through before firing off more at the Witch. "Status. I need to know what's going on, what's happening." Even as he said that he was examining Brindlemist, searching her over for signs of what was happening.
Despite his best efforts, Roseshade continued to ignore him, and his ears perked at Amberbird's command. The prisoner needed her help, right now - and though she would struggle to forgive herself for losing Brindlemist, she would never forgive herself if she sat here in shock and let those kits die. She might not forgive him for what he was about to do, but when had Robinring ever wanted her to like him?
So when the gentle approach brought him nothing, he parted his jaws in an exaggerated yawn and settled down comfortably on the ground outside the nursery, curling into a tight spotted ball and closed his eyes to sleep. "That last kitten is probably dead by now. We might as well leave it where it is; at least now there will be less crying at night. If only Fervidsummer would shut up and stop crying, maybe I could get some sleep now."

Normally such a comment would have earned Robinring a harsh slap on his cheek, but now it was greeted with only a cold distant stare. It was as if Roseshade had left, and all that was standing there before him was an incomplete shell. It hurt, it hurt to much face this head on, as she distanced herself as far from the situation as she could. Even as she was ordered by the medicine cat, and insulted by her mate, her face reamined flat and lifeless. The tears upon her cheek seemingly frozen in time. She rose stiffly to her paws, entering into the den more like a puppet than a live cat. Her eyes remaining firmly on the ground, looking anywhere but the lifeless form of her sister.... The site of which would break what little control she had manage to maintain
"She's had two kits, there is at least one more. Maybe two. The kit is stuck in the birth cannal, it's head is to big to make it through even with me guiding it and every herb I could think of that might have been of use..." the kit was as good as dead if they couldn't get it out, quickly running out of air as it's mother lied lifeless
