Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He had to be cursed. There simply could not exist another explanation. His first mate disappeared in the dead of night, never to be seen again. It hurt, a lot. He couldn't bear being in MoonClan after that. But this time hit different. It hit much, much harder. He watched his mate slowly succumb to an infection that festered for months. He had watched the beautiful life of his mate slip away from her day by day. He watched her selfless soul be tortured for months on end with rises and deteriorations in her condition. He felt his own soul being torn at once again. He loved as he spent every night sleeping next to her, and then broke when she never woke up.
The furneral had been what she deserved and the scenery captured the beautiful and pure spirit that Sunnysmiles had. Nightfury himself picked the flowers from around the territory that lay over her final resting place. He mixed in daises, daffodils, and all sorts of brightly covered plants. For once his fur was adorned with the ornate paints that he typically forwent, but instead of wearing his wind zodiac on his right shoulder, he wore the heart zodiac, Sunnysmiles's one.
Despite all this, he couldn't help the feelings of rage that boiled to the surface. He regretted not giving a eulogy... but he had not idea what to say then. All the sadness and rage swirling inside him came to a boil as claws tore through the arrangement in one slice. The rage remained, and he just collapsed and wept.
The funeral had come and gone, the cats of the clan fading back to the rest of the territory so that the family could grieve in peace. Even as other left, Littlestar remained simply sitting in silence after her part as High Priestess was done. She had asked Skipstep to go to, to comfort the rest of their children as they left. Now it was only she and Nightfury left at the burial grounds. She didn’t speak directly to him, even as he shredded the arrangement. She understood his anger and grief, better than most. There were no words to comfort those who had lost one close to them. Nothing one could say to ease the pain in their heart.
She stood stiffly walking over to a set of three sunflowers that towered over the two newer graves. Stopping at the first one, she fell into a deep bow tears searing a line across her cheek
“A million times I’ve needed you. A million times I’ve cried. If love was enough to save you, you would have never died. In life I loved you dearly, in death I love you still. In my heart you held a place, that no else can fill. It broke my heart to loose you, But you didn’t go alone. you took part of me with you, the day the sun god took you home”
As she finished she stood, taking a claw and cutting deep into the flesh of her leg, before standing and going to the next sunflower as the crimson tears stained her fur. Repeating the prayer at each sunflower, until there were five. Hopekit, Faithkit, Peacekit, Bloody, and Honestpaw. Now she stood beside of Nightfury, her fur nearly brushing his as she fell into a bow once more the words tumbling from her lips(the original poem is found here pin.it/58r26VY)
He hardly noticed Littlestar leave to offer the poem to the other graves. But when she returned to Sunnysmiles's, it hit him like an eagle. Littlestar's words stung like pouring alcohol on a wound. They made him bury himself in grief for long moments as her words seared themselves into his mind. But he couldn't deny that a very small amount of weight had been lifted from his shoulders. The world still remained, but it hurt a little less. He managed to open his eyes as Littlestar's blood soaked into the earth. His paws reached for the flowers in his reach and he pulled them together once again. It lacked the perfection of the original arrangement... but, like Sunnysmile's, he had no chance of getting that back. He took another quivering breath to calm his rage.
He then broke his silence. "She was an amazing cat... when Bloodystar forced our marriage she spoke up and wanted to fight for you, and what you would have wanted." He paused. "After the fire, even when she was at her worst... she still worried for everyone else. I don't understand how a place so cruel and unforgiving made someone like her. But I was better with it, and all of us were." He wiped the tears from his face. "I do love her..."

Littlestar made the final cut, stumbling forward and landing on her chest as she rested there. The blood from her leg flowing freely with no effort from the High Priestess to stop it as it seeped into the soft disturbed ground of the grave. The pain of the wounds hurt, but it was nothing compared to the way her heart ached. Even as Nightfury spoke, her gaze never left the grave. How far had she pushed Nightfury to hear those words? To find out if he truly loved her or not, trying to protect her from the one cat who had been there for her in the end
"I'm glad she found you..." they hadn't come together in a way that she had liked, but the words she spoke were true. Nightfury had proved to be loyal to her daughter, even as she lied dying "You were there for her when I couldn't be, supported her in ways I can never match. I was afraid you would break her heart, but are not the one who let her down in the end... It was me. I was the one who failed her" even with the bright colored paints that adorned her fur, the High Priestess looked pale. Even with all of her medical knowledge and the power of the Sun God on her side, she still couldn't save her. Sunnysmiles wasn't the first patient she had lost, and yet this death hit differently. It was the first time she had to stand by and watch a member of her family suffer, with no way to help. The first time death had brought her... relief? It hurt worse to admit it to herself, that she said a silent thank you when her daughter's suffering had come to an end
He did what he did best. He listened. He let the silence hang in the air for several tense moment before he let himself speak again. "My family in Toxicity... we had peculiar beliefs. I think they hold value now, even if I don't follow them anymore. The premise is this: we are all Death's guides whether we want to be or not. In my former job, I brought many cats right up to Death's gates. As warriors, we guide prey and enemies to Death's doors. No action we take can go against that guide. Every action to save life in one will take the same life from someone else, even if that action does not save the life in the end. Life is fluid, and there is only so much of it to go around."
"We saw warriors and fighters as the fluid and cycle itself, but the healers are the flow. Cats like you can only change small things in a cat's inevitable walk towards death, but in the end they will die. In Sunnysmiles' case, you gave her time on this earth to say goodbye to her loved ones, and to find closure in herself. Without you, her death would have been swift. Maybe it would have been a blessing to her... but it is not what she would have wished. She gave her life to others... she would have wanted it to happen how it happened." He let his voice disappear into the silence of the night before speaking again. "You didn't fail her, this isn't your fault. The fire sealed her fate the moment it touched her." He grabbed her scruff in his jaws and pulled Littlestar up to her paws, and then pressed a paw onto one of the gaping wounds. "Remember she wouldn't want you to suffer for her."

The silver queen listened as Nightfury spoke, her eyes closed as her sides rose and fell in a ragged pattern. The hard ground putting pressure onto her ribs that had been broken over and over. She didn't comment as he told his story, to entranced by the words he was speaking to interrupt with her own.Death's guides... It was a unique way of thinking about it. She didn't have much time to think about it, as she was hauled to her feet. The world around her spinning, only to have his paw press deeply into her wound causing her to wince
"You have misunderstood my intentions" she replied calmly, now face to face with the very cat she had jumped to conclusions of herself. He had proved them wrong, each and every one "These wounds are not to cause myself to suffer, it is a vow. A promise" still she made no move to stop the bleeding "I wasn't always part of SunClan, I was never meant to be SunClan's High Priestess. I am the sole daughter of Goldenstar and Hazethroat, conceived , born, betrothed, and raised to become WinterClan's next leader after my father passed. Had even one small detail of the events that unfolded during my childhood had changed, I would not be where I am now. I don't have many memories of my ancestral home, I was only a kit when I was whisked away to SunClan. But there is one story that my father would tell me as I would drift to sleep at night that sticks with me even now"
"In WinterClan there was cats known as Prison Guards... In order to receive their full name, they had to undergo a ceremony. The apprentice would present themselves before the leader, who would scar them. Cut after cut, they would stand there as the leader would carve designs into their flesh. As the designs were carved, hot ash was shoved into the wounds to ensure they would never fade even after they had healed. It was painful, and dangerous. The medicine cats was not allowed to give these cats any medical attention. MNothing to ward off infection. Nothing to help ease the pain. Many cats lost their lives as a result. and yet... This was the day the apprentices looked forward to the most during the training. This was the day prison guards would look back upon fondly"
Perhaps he ancestry made since. No cat from the desert would ever have as long fur as her own... but she did not quite strike him as the royalty type. But, he hardly knew what it looked like. Absum Lux nor Toxicity had royalty when he was a part of them, and then MoonClan had no difference. There was nothing separating the leaders from the commoners. The imposed hierarchy in WinterClan just amused him more than anything else. Royalty more often than not ended up banished or dead eventually.
Despite what she said about the wounds being a vow, the tom still pressed on the wounds. He had no desire to see her suffer, for her daughter's sake. Still, this Prison Guard business went beyond intriguing him. He would have liked to have seen this for himself. Maybe if he were born in that place, he himself would have volunteered for this ritual. How much worse could it be there than in Toxicity? The lack of herbs did complicate things... but the curandera in Toxicity wasn't exactly known for its consistency. They focused on the poisons most of the time, and not much else grew in their snowy wasteland. "Honor, perhaps. Cats live and die for it."
