( Pinesimmer is revealing a deep dark secret of Aspenstar's... and the medicine cat Ahava is paying the price for it. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in! )
The lanky brown tom could barely contain himself as he managed to climb to the to Aspenstar's place, from which she did her announcements. He wore a gleeful grin so wide it looked like his face might rip in half, and his voice cast over the clan and echoed off the walls with cruel humor. "Come one, come all, to bear witness to Aspenstar's shame!" Now, one might wonder how he got up there, but he actually had working limbs now. Perhaps he was a bit shakier before as he worked to regain his strength, but at least it seemed like he was otherwise fine, likely to the dismay of just about everyone in NightClan. Of course, almost no one would be able to ignore this call, if only wanting to see what kind of train wreck would befall NightClan today.
"So I have a story to tell, and you're all going to love it! Dear Aspen here, curse her soul, it seems, lost a battle with a goldfish. I heard allll about it while I was healing. This terrible sister of mine can't even hunt an itty bitty fish without drowning herself." He sat down, slowly lifting his limbs to make a 'small' motion, little space between his paws to indicate the assumed size of the creature his sister had failed to capture for prey. "This is the leader you want? One who can be bested by a creature the size of a newborn kit? Oh, how pathetic can you get!?" The tom doubled over, cackling at the story. It didn't matter even, if anyone else laughed with him, because he found it absolutely hilarious, and he knew that his sister would want it a secret.
If he wanted to keep his legs working, he was probably not playing the right game this evening. She had been summoned from her den when one of the apprentices had informed her that her brother was on her announcement place. This had annoyed her enough in the first place. After all, she had been planning for at least one more week before Pinesimmer could freely walk. Why hadn't Cana given her the warning that he was going to be mobile?
She didn't have time to resonate on that, though, as she had to focus on his words. It see that there was even more the medicine cat hadn't told her; there were only four cats that knew the truth about that night, and Cana was the only one who had any regular interaction with her brother. Phantomfox and Larkspur wouldn't betray her trust like that, and she highly doubted the SwiftClan leader walked his merry ass all the way to SwiftClan just to cause a problem for her. After all, Aspenstar considered the two friends, or at least on well enough terms that she could reasonably discredit the idea of his involvement.
Which meant the answer to who told him was simple. Her medicine cat, the elemental, the one that she had been ignoring the signs for so long. The dreams had become more frequent, and Aspenstar could assume that the latest string of disappearances was directly tied to the fact that she had not yet acted upon StarClan's will. At first, their instructions had been vague; they had hoped that she would realize their desire the day that they decreed that cats that did not follow StarClan were to be ignored and looked down upon. Yet, Cana was stuck in a world where that was... impossible. Cana had made it clear that she would not follow the decree, and Aspenstar had tried to fight it, but had eventually given in. The dreams had gotten more intense, though. Still, she had given Cana the chance.
Now, she couldn't feel anything but fury towards the medicine cat. She put her neck on the line to allow Cana to continue practicing medicine, to let her stay in the group. And this? This was how she was repaid? The cat she was supposed to trust for medical advice, the one she was supposed to be able to tell things to in confidence, had betrayed her.
Her motions were quick as she made her way over to her place. "You have approximately thirty seconds to get off my podium or I will ensure that the next time your legs don't work, it'll be because I've broken your spine and not because my Captain broke your legs." Her words were low and cold, and the crazed look in her mismatched gaze showed that she was the furthest from joking she had ever been with the tom. She had tried to exile him once and it didn't work. If he was going to continue to cause dissidence in her group, to stir up trouble whenever he could, she was going to make sure that the reprecussions only continued to get worse.
She would deal with the rest of the clan in just a moment. For now, she needed to deal with her brother.
Larkspur couldn’t even begin to comprehend the absolute audacity of Pinesimmer. First off, he had no business waltzing up to the pedestal that her leader used, and then she couldn’t believe the words that came out of his mouth. Her jaw could’ve hit the floor. The black she-cat searches the crowd of cats to find the fawn colored she-cat, knowing in this moment, she wouldn’t hesitate to murder Pinesimmer in front of the entire clan. Any other day, Larkspur might welcome this public execution, but after the story he’d just shared, she figured murder was likely not her leader’s best choice if she was to keep popularity in the clan.
Quickly, she weaves through the crowd to Aspenstar, feeling the unadulterated fury that dripped off her like lava. She brushes up close, but not enough that she would be pressing weight against her. “Aspen, it’s not worth it. Don’t break the clan’s trust.” Larkspur murmurs, hoping she’d be able to hear her above her rage. Her strong blue gaze then redirects itself to Pinesimmer, the wheels turning quickly to figure out what she would do from here.
“You’d best get down now, you can’t run this time Pinesimmer.” Larkspur had fought him once, and she was more than willing to again. “Those legs that just healed are rather fragile still. Would be a shame if someone were to just... re-break them.” Her voice rang clear and confident, her gaze hardened and angry. She could easily grab him by the scruff and shake him out like a chew toy if the time came.
Puddlepaw watches with wide eyes. He didn’t know what he’d expected, but this certainly wasn’t it. He searches for Skunkpaw in the crowd, knowing his brother was likely judging their leader right now along with the rest of the clan.
“You don’t think that’s true right?” Ceruleanpaw asks Skunkpaw, who he sat down with easily. He watched the deputy. “I think Larkspur has this one if she follows through with her threats.”
"What, Aspenstar. Going to prove you're just as much a coward as always, hiding behind the claws of another. No wonder why, seeing as you can't even fight something so small as a goldfish." He was wise to jump down, but that didn't actually help anything at all as he slipped into the crowd, his voice ringing clear despite no longer being in his sister's place. Pinesimmer didn't need to continue to be there to monitor when he could continue to spread the word amongst the crowd, his pelt weaving in and out of the bodies, never anywhere longer than a few moments to keep someone like Phantomfox from easily being able to locate him. "Aspenstar's a coward, can't even fight a fish!~" He singsonged, listening to hope even one or two would join in. "And it's all true too! You just need as Ahava, she treated Aspenstar after all."
Speaking of the medicine cat, where was she? If one looked hard enough, they might spot the she-cat in the shadows of the medicine den, frame barely visible as she watched the chaos unfold silently.
"I don't believe a single word that comes out of Pinesimmer's mouth," the apprentice meowed, motioning with his tail for Puddlepaw to come over. "He isn't the most reliable source." But, the tom couldn't help but wonder if there was some truth to it. After all, he'd noticed that Aspenstar had stayed as far away from the river as possible on most days. He had figured it was because her brother had found his demise in it, but what if that wasn't the whole story? What if she was hiding something? The tom blinked, before shrugging. "What do you think, Puddlepaw? Who's your bet on?"
There were two things that the angular tom was lucky for. The first was that Larkspur had been there. Had the deputy taken even a moment longer to brush against the leader's pelt and distract her momentarily from her rage, Pinesimmer would have been as good as dead. The second thing he was lucky for was that he elected to get off of her vantage point before she had the chance to get up there. If he hadn't, it was quite likely that the small fawn colored she-cat would have thrown him right off, right off the back side, where there was a severe drop that she could only hope he'd break his neck falling from.
"Find Ahava Vairocana." There was a flat fierceness to her order to Larkspur. She'd never spoken to her deputy so tersely; even when Pinesimmer had pulled his antics before, there had only been one other moment in her life that the tom really pushed her to the edge. It was almost stunning how much she hated the tom that she was born and raised with. He brought out the worst in her, the side of her that she tried desperately to keep under wraps. You see, despite her charming disposition, despite the fact she had made it so that the clan loved and respected her (often times in more ways than one), there was something lurking just below the surface. A pulsing darkness that lingered in the back of her mind, a steamship with no release valve. She struggled against that side of her, and most of the time, she was able to ignore it as the voice inside her head. One day, he would drive her to unleash that part; every day he came just one step closer.
She closed her eyes for a moment, before she herself jumped onto her spot herself. Her facial expression was completely blank. Not embarrassed, not angry. Completely devoid of all emotion. Not even her signature half smile softened her visage. She knew that she had to make the correction as quickly as possible.
"There is some truth to what Pinesimmer has to say," she meowed, her tail sweeping low to the earth. "Cradlegrave and I did have an accident with a fish." She clenched her jaw. It wasn't necessarily that she was embarrased to tell the clan - she'd mostly avoided telling anyone who didn't need to know pretty explicitly so that her brother wouldn't find out. They just didn't need to know. "However, in true Pinesimmer way, he has distorted the story. If you all must know what happened that afternoon, I will tell you, but the reason that I didn't announce it to the group was because my first life was lost within the first two weeks of my leadership. I did not want you all to think I was unequipped for the position. NightClan is thriving under my guidance, and I didn't want to sacrifice that chance to thrive by letting doubt swirl when I was still so green."

"So you lost a life to a fish within a half moon of your leadership, AND you lied to the clan about it? Truly respectable." Pinesimmer mocked. "Come on, have you done ANYTHING right? I'm surprised StarClan even gave you your nine lives when you and yours constantly slap them in the face like this." Of course he had to go there. Did he know about Aspenstar's dreams? No. But he could guess she probably wasn't listening to StarClan's orders about treating all non-StarClan clans like rogue. "I wonder how long until they forsake you at this rate, considering how you treat NightClan. Not even thinking them worthy of knowing their leader DIED. Now you just look incompetent AND show that you're going to just keep things from the general population."
Cana could hear the faint his of her name from where she stood, and like a ghost, the healer retreated into the medicine den. There was no reason to run, after all, hadn't this gone exactly as she intended? No, she simply slipped deeper into the cavern to await the arrival of Larkspur and all those she might bring with.
Larkspur bares her teeth as she passes angrily past Pinesimmer, the tom also lucky Aspenstar had given her a direct order. She wouldn’t have hesitated to barrel him over at this point, if for anything else, to shut him up. She knew Aspenstar was doing the best she could, especially with everything else going on. The she-cat slips through the crowd of cats, grateful for her petite figure with all the bodies that were close together.
She finally makes her way to the medicine den, her blue eyes glowing angrily in the dark. “You’re in for it.” She says lowly, a growl following behind her words. “You’d best stay in here until all of this is over. Wolfriot and Mantisopera will be guarding the entrance until Aspenstar can come in here.”
Puddlepaw stares in shock at Pinesimmer. “Lark’s four seconds away from destroying him. My bet’s on her for sure.”
Ceruleanpaw glances over at Puddlepaw, laughing. “It’s gonna be an interesting fight for sure.”

Pinesimmer was smart enough at least, to move himself as far away from Larkspur as possible, ensuring that he kept as many cats between him and her as he could, and kept moving so that she couldn't quite corner him. Even if she did get close, there were enough cats around, he hoped, that he could just drag someone in her path to attack instead of him.
There was a slight laugh that emanated from the medicine den as Larkspur growled into the darkness. It only echoed off the density walls, adding an eerie quality to the sound. "If I'd intended to leave, I'd have been long gone already. I'm flattered, though, that you consider me dangerous enough to need a guard." Rather than be comforting, Ahava's unnaturally calm and unbothered tone came across more sinister, despite the only thing that changed being that she'd revealed Aspenstar's secret, and nothing about the way she spoke.
